A few habits can make early expeditions safer: use terrain to break contact, move deliberately, compare trade offers, keep your backpack manageable, and use food when a small health top-up is enough. Some details below come from a player’s playthrough rather than a guaranteed game rule, so check current item descriptions and settings—especially after the September 2026 Update 2.0 overhaul.
1. Raised terrain can buy you time against some mutants
Vehicles, containers, and other raised surfaces may keep some close-range mutants from reaching you, giving you a moment to shoot, heal, or escape. Brendan Lowry described this as a useful tactic in his playthrough, not as a universal rule: enemy behavior can vary, and ranged threats can still hit you from an elevated position. Windows Central’s tip specifically calls out poltergeists, burers, and controllers as exceptions to the tactic.

Use the environment for cover and a route out, not as a promise of safety. GSC’s beginner guide recommends using cover and retreating when a fight becomes too dangerous. If a perch leaves you exposed or trapped, move rather than waiting for the mutant to behave as expected.
2. Try slow walking when you need quieter movement or steadier aim
Lowry reports that slow walking can reduce the sound you make, help you flank hostile stalkers, and steady your aim. Treat those benefits as playthrough advice rather than a confirmed stealth mechanic: GSC’s beginner FAQ does not independently verify them, and precise behavior may be affected by the current version and control setup.

Check the movement and aiming bindings in the game’s controls menu for your platform; the input name and button can differ between keyboard and controller, and customized bindings may change them. Test the movement in a relatively safe area before relying on it to approach an enemy.
3. Compare trader offers before selling valuable loot
Lowry recommends selling loot to arms dealers, saying they pay more than bartenders. The official beginner guide confirms that trading can replenish supplies, but does not establish that one trader type always offers better prices. Compare the displayed offer in your current game before selling, particularly for valuable equipment.

Coupons are useful for more than supplies: Lowry’s article notes that they pay for repairs, fast travel, upgrades, ammunition, and other provisions. Before trading, consider what you need for the next expedition and whether an item is worth keeping rather than converting into coupons.
4. Use the personal stash to stay mobile
Items placed in your personal stash can be retrieved from another base, according to Lowry’s article. This makes the stash useful for equipment and loot you want to keep but do not need to carry on every trip. GSC independently warns that an overloaded backpack makes it harder to run from mutants.

Before leaving a hub, offload unnecessary gear and decide what you actually need for the destination. GSC recommends preparing an expedition with first-aid kits, bandages, ammunition, anti-radiation medicine, energy drinks, and food; repair equipment, review equipped artifacts, and rest before heading out. Balance those supplies against the weight that could slow your retreat.
5. Check whether bread or sausage can cover a small health loss
Lowry says bread and sausage restore a little health, making them possible options when you are only slightly hurt and would rather save medical supplies. GSC’s guide confirms that food can restore health, but does not name those specific foods in the relevant guidance. Read the item description in your current version before relying on a particular food for healing.

Match treatment to the problem: GSC’s FAQ says first-aid kits or food restore health, bandages stop bleeding, and anti-radiation medicine or vodka addresses radiation. Put frequently needed healing items in quick slots so they are available under pressure.

The five tips work best as part of a deliberate loop: choose a destination, prepare for its likely risks, and leave yourself enough supplies and mobility to turn back. GSC’s Beginner’s Guide & FAQs also recommends using bolts and a detector around anomalies, and replenishing resources from caches, dead stalkers’ PDAs, enemy bodies, trade, and mission rewards.

- The Crew 2 - Xbox one
- Before setting out: repair your equipment, review whether your equipped artifacts’ effects are still useful, and carry supplies suited to the trip.
- In a fight: use cover, choose a weapon suited to the enemy and distance, conserve scarce ammunition and medicine, and retreat if the situation turns against you.
- At an anomaly: use bolts and a detector rather than walking blindly into danger.
- During an Emission: get to shelter and wait it out.
- When you need to save: manual saves are blocked during combat and some story-restricted moments; automatic saves occur at key points. Do not assume you can save in the middle of a fight.
- When ammunition is scarce: the knife does not require ammunition.
Why older tips may behave differently now
GSC’s September 1, 2026 Update 2.0 announcement describes the release as the largest overhaul since launch. It reports an upgrade to Unreal Engine 5.5.4, more than 500 bug fixes, and A-Life improvements, including more contested points of interest and stalkers looting fallen characters even when the player is absent. The update also adds binoculars, weapons and scopes, fog, a PDA statistics page, and Custom Rules difficulty. Because encounter behavior and controls can change between versions, use current settings and what you observe in your game when a tactic depends on an exact behavior.
