That list is an older secondary account, not a verified current ranking. In later interviews, Musk discussed playing Diablo and called Elden Ring a top-five candidate for best game ever.
The five games named in the 2017 list
These are the five titles in TechJuice’s 2017 roundup. The article says its list arose from a Reddit AMA, but does not link primary evidence for every individual game claim. Treat the names as the roundup’s account rather than a definitive ranking of Musk’s current favorites.
- Fallout. TechJuice describes Musk as loving the series. The roundup does not establish which installment he prefers.
- Warcraft. The article names the series but does not specify a particular release.
- BioShock. The game appears in the roundup. A separate Fliist compilation also attributes to Musk a preference for story-driven first-person shooters “like Bioshock,” but that compilation is secondary rather than the original source.
- Mass Effect. TechJuice includes the series. Fliist separately attributes an answer naming Mass Effect and, elsewhere, Mass Effect 2; those references do not establish a ranked choice across the series.
- Overwatch. The roundup reports that Musk tweeted about the game and preferred Soldier 76. Indy100 later described Overwatch as an older recommendation, but the available accounts do not establish it as a current favorite.
What Musk said about games in later interviews
Diablo and why he plays
In a 2023 interview with Lex Fridman, Musk discussed Diablo IV and said gaming can calm his mind. He described the appeal of a difficult game as reaching a flow state: it should be challenging without being either too easy or too hard, and a sense of progress matters. The transcript identifies itself as human-generated and warns it may contain errors.
In a 2024 interview with Don Lemon, Musk said he played video games online with friends and had been playing Diablo. He did not name a specific installment in that remark. The interview is evidence that he said he played it then, not that it is his all-time favorite.

Elden Ring
In the 2023 Fridman interview, Musk called Elden Ring “a candidate for best game ever” and said it was “Top five for sure.” He praised its creativity and art, and recommended playing at high resolution on a large television. Those are his opinions and recommendation from that conversation, not an objective ranking or endorsement of a particular platform or edition.
Quake
In the 2024 Don Lemon interview, Musk also recalled being “semi pro good at Quake” more than 25 years earlier. That is a statement about his past skill, not a current preference.

How to read the list
The evidence supports two different answers, depending on what “loves playing” means: the five games in an older roundup are Fallout, Warcraft, BioShock, Mass Effect and Overwatch; later first-person interviews document comments about playing Diablo and praising Elden Ring. Neither interview supplies a comprehensive current top-five list.
