There is no definitive, universally agreed ranking of indie games. This is an editorially curated list of 50 picks, grouped by the kind of experience they offer rather than ranked from best to worst. It balances distinctive design, genre range, historical place, and lasting appeal, with horror and roguelikes represented alongside adventure, role-playing, puzzles, strategy, and more.
“Indie” is a broad label, not a precise production rule. PC Gamer’s Jody Macgregor and contributing editors describe it as meaning “‘independent’” and games made “without external interference,” while noting that the term is contested. In practice, independence varies, particularly when a publisher is involved. The list is not limited to PC; check the developer or publisher’s current platform and edition information for your device before buying.
Roguelikes and roguelites
1. Hades
A run-based action game that makes repeated attempts part of a continuing story: progress brings new character conversations as well as combat opportunities. PC Gamer highlights that blend of run structure, persistent narrative, fighting, and character interaction.
2. Cult of the Lamb
Bright animal characters and a sinister cult premise collide in an unusually sharp tonal mix. It pairs action runs with the appeal of tending a community, making its contrast between cute presentation and unsettling subject matter central to the experience.
#1 Best Overall
- Start your own cult in a land of false prophets
- Venture out into diverse and mysterious regions to build a loyal community of woodland Followers
- Repay your debt by building a loyal following
- Spread your Word to become the one true cult!
3. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
A dark, room-by-room action roguelike built around item combinations and unpredictable runs. Its appeal is the way each new pickup can reshape a run, rewarding experimentation as much as reflexes.
4. Spelunky 2
A platforming roguelike in which hazards, enemies, and physics turn every descent into a chain of consequential decisions. It is a strong fit for players who want to learn through failure and value improvisation over a fixed route.
5. Dead Cells
Fast side-scrolling combat meets branching routes and run-based progression. Its precise movement and weapon variety make it a natural choice for players who want an action game that keeps changing the shape of a session.
6. Slay the Spire
A deck-building roguelike that turns each climb into a series of choices about cards, rewards, and risk. The strategy comes from shaping a coherent deck from imperfect options rather than relying on one permanent build.

A compact tactical game where positioning and enemy intent matter more than surprise. Each turn asks players to protect objectives while redirecting threats, making its small battlefields feel like deliberate puzzles.
8. FTL: Faster Than Light
A spaceship-management roguelike about juggling crew, systems, and scarce resources during a dangerous journey. Its stories emerge from emergencies and trade-offs rather than scripted scenes.
9. Risk of Rain 2
A third-person action roguelike where escalating danger and item synergies turn a run into a race against time. It works especially well for players who enjoy co-op chaos and builds that become increasingly unpredictable.
10. Vampire Survivors
A minimalist survival game that reduces combat input while making weapon combinations and positioning the core decisions. Its escalating swarms create a satisfying arc from vulnerability to overwhelming power.
Horror and the unsettling
11. R.E.P.O.
The 2025 Indie Game Awards community picks list R.E.P.O. in its Horror Game category. That is a useful current genre reference, not a claim that the award establishes an all-time ranking. Its place here broadens the horror section with a contemporary pick.
12. Amnesia: The Dark Descent
A first-person horror game built around vulnerability and atmosphere rather than fighting back. It suits players who want dread to come from navigating threatening spaces with limited means of control.
Rank #2
13. SOMA
Science-fiction horror that uses an isolated setting to explore identity and consciousness. Its strongest appeal is for players who want the unease of survival horror alongside questions that linger beyond individual scares.
14. Signalis
A science-fiction survival horror game with retro presentation, constrained resources, and a fragmented, dreamlike story. It rewards players who like piecing together an unsettling world as carefully as managing threats.
15. Darkwood
A top-down survival horror game that builds dread through exploration and the nightly need to hold a position. Its perspective and resource pressure create a different kind of tension from first-person horror.
16. The Mortuary Assistant
A horror game set around the unnerving routines of mortuary work. Familiar tasks become the source of tension, making it a fit for players who prefer creeping unease and ritual over constant action.
17. Detention
A side-scrolling horror adventure rooted in a school setting and a heavy atmosphere. Its blend of exploration, history, and supernatural dread makes it a strong pick for story-led horror fans.
18. World of Horror
A stark, retro-styled horror RPG structured around investigations and unsettling encounters. It turns its visual austerity into an advantage, leaving players to imagine more than the screen shows.

20. Hollow Knight: Silksong
The 2025 Indie Game Awards community picks list Silksong under Adventure Game. The category label is a contemporary reference point; it does not, by itself, settle any all-time comparison. It belongs in an adventure-focused shortlist for readers following the genre’s newer entries.
21. Celeste
A demanding precision platformer whose short, tightly designed screens turn failure into a practical step toward mastery. Its story of confronting personal struggle gives the climb emotional weight without taking attention away from the movement.
22. A Short Hike
A gentle exploration game about wandering, meeting locals, and finding small reasons to take the scenic route. It is an ideal counterpoint to high-pressure games when the goal is discovery without a punishing challenge.

An exploration mystery built around learning how a small solar system works. Knowledge, not conventional character upgrades, is what lets players make progress, so discovery itself becomes the reward.
24. Tunic
An action-adventure game that makes exploration and deciphering an unfamiliar instruction manual part of the same mystery. It is especially satisfying for players who enjoy noticing clues and assembling a world’s rules themselves.
25. Fez
A puzzle platformer that lets players rotate a two-dimensional world to reveal new paths and perspectives. Its central trick encourages a slower, observant style of play.
26. The Witness
An island exploration game centered on line-drawing puzzles whose rules players must infer from examples. It is best for patient puzzle fans who enjoy learning a visual language rather than being told how it works.

Role-playing and story-led games
31. Disco Elysium
A role-playing game about a detective investigating a case in a politically marked city. PC Gamer’s RPG guide emphasizes that premise; the game stands out for putting conversation, inner conflict, and the city’s social texture at the center of play.

A bureaucratic simulation in which processing documents forces the player to make decisions with human consequences. PC Gamer points to the way paperwork becomes a vehicle for moral choices, which is exactly what makes the premise so effective.
37. Citizen Sleeper
A science-fiction role-playing game about surviving and finding community in a precarious orbital setting. Its narrative and resource decisions appeal to players who like character-focused stories shaped by systems.
38. To the Moon
A short, narrative-centered adventure about two doctors exploring a dying man’s memories. It is a good fit for players looking for an emotional story rather than combat or complex progression.
Puzzles, strategy, and simulation
39. Blue Prince
The 2025 Indie Game Awards community picks list Blue Prince under Puzzle Game. That category identifies its awards-page placement, not a universal verdict. It earns a spot among puzzle recommendations for readers seeking a contemporary entry in the form.
40. Baba Is You
A puzzle game in which the rules themselves are movable blocks. Changing a sentence can change what objects are, how they behave, or what counts as winning, making logical reframing the central skill.
41. Return of the Obra Dinn
A mystery game about identifying the fate of a ship’s crew using a limited, stylized visual perspective. Its satisfaction comes from cross-checking clues and reaching deductions rather than following a conventional quest trail.
42. Mini Metro
A minimalist transit-planning game that asks players to keep a growing city moving with limited lines and resources. Its clean presentation makes the strategic pressure easy to read but difficult to master.

44. Factorio
A factory-building strategy game about designing production chains and improving them as demands grow. It suits players who enjoy solving logistical problems and seeing a system become more efficient through iteration.
45. Abiotic Factor
The 2025 Indie Game Awards community picks list Abiotic Factor under Survival Game. It is a useful current genre marker for a list that spans survival as well as more familiar indie categories.
Action, multiplayer, and distinctive worlds
46. Hades II
The 2025 Indie Game Awards community picks list Hades II under Action Game. That category is a reference to the award page’s community picks, not evidence of all-time consensus. It brings a contemporary action entry into a field where run-based design continues to evolve.
47. Terraria
A side-view sandbox that combines exploration, crafting, building, and combat. The freedom to set personal goals—whether pursuing gear, digging deeper, or making a home—gives it broad appeal across solo and shared play.
48. Minecraft
A block-based sandbox whose simple building materials support survival, construction, and open-ended experimentation. Its inclusion reflects how a flexible creative premise can sustain very different kinds of play.
49. Alien Hominid
Alien Hominid offers one concrete thread in indie games’ move from the web toward consoles: the Game Developers Choice Awards says it began as a web game in 2002 and developed into PlayStation 2 and GameCube versions in 2004, describing that transition as part of a new wave of indie console games.
50. Among Us
A social deduction game in which a group must complete tasks while identifying hidden impostors. Its simple shared objective turns conversation, suspicion, and bluffing into the main event, making it a natural multiplayer pick.
How to choose your next game
- For repeatable action: start with Hades, Slay the Spire, Dead Cells, or Spelunky 2, depending on whether you want story-rich combat, tactical deck decisions, fast platforming, or unforgiving improvisation.
- For horror: choose between the resource pressure of survival horror, the exploratory unease of Darkwood, or the story-focused dread of SOMA and Detention.
- For a quieter session: A Short Hike and Stardew Valley emphasize exploration and routine, while Mini Metro offers compact strategic challenges.
- For a story that asks something of you: Papers, Please and Disco Elysium make choices and social context part of the play, while Outer Wilds makes curiosity the route forward.
- Before purchasing: confirm the game’s current platform, edition, regional availability, and price with its developer, publisher, or storefront. The cited editorial and awards pages do not establish current availability for every title.
Why these 50—and what “best” means here
This is a curated selection, not a claim of objective winners or a consensus ranking. The list favors variety in genre and play pattern, distinctive central ideas, a mix of eras, and experiences with enduring appeal. The entries are grouped to help readers choose by mood and mechanics, not to imply that a game’s position within a section is a precise score.
The breadth is deliberate. PC Gamer’s guide, updated September 3, 2026, organizes PC indie recommendations across exploration, adventure, RPG, puzzle, roguelike, story, cozy, survival, strategy, and platformer categories. The 2025 Indie Game Awards community picks likewise use categories including horror, adventure, puzzle, survival, and action. Neither source establishes a definitive all-time top 50; they help illustrate how wide the field is.
