Animal Well hides an editable rabbit mural puzzle built from 50 distinct clues. Each save reveals one 4-by-4 piece of a 40-by-10 image, so players pooled their clues to assemble the full mural. But “requires 50 people” is shorthand: the evidence establishes 50 pieces, not a minimum of 50 people solving it together.
What is the hidden Animal Well puzzle?
It is a rabbit mural: an editable pixel display whose full image measures 40 by 10 pixels. A clue panel near the display shows a 4-by-4 pattern. According to Push Square’s May 13, 2024 report, each player’s completed grid supplies one fiftieth of the mural.

That means the clue in your save is only a fragment, not the full solution. The puzzle’s design encourages players to share what their games reveal and combine the patterns into the larger image.
Does it actually require at least 50 people?
Not in the strict sense implied by the headline. The supported fact is that the mural has 50 distinct pieces and that an individual game reveals one piece. Players therefore turned to community collaboration to collect the full set. The sources do not establish that 50 distinct people are a logical minimum, or that anyone had to be online and contribute simultaneously.

A player can instead use pieces shared by others or a community compilation. A May 2024 Steam Community discussion describes a helper that displays all 50 patterns and lets players assemble the mural. That is contemporaneous player documentation, not official developer guidance.
What should you do with your 4-by-4 piece?
- Read the pattern. Find the clue panel beneath or near the mural and note the 4-by-4 grid shown in your game.
- Share or compare it. If you are gathering clues with other players, contribute your pattern and collect the other distinct pieces.
- Use a compilation if you prefer. A community helper can provide the set of 50 pieces without requiring you to obtain them through separate players; you can still do the image-assembly work yourself.
- Reconstruct the larger image. Arrange the small patterns as parts of the 40-by-10 mural display.
Why is the puzzle associated with community solving?
The 50-part structure makes a single save an incomplete view of the clue set, and sharing information is the straightforward way to fill the gaps. The developers also anticipated community-led work on Animal Well’s deeper puzzles. In a Game Developer interview, publisher Dan Adelman described the broader effort around the game’s puzzles: “There were so many people who were so passionate about Animal Well, that there were probably, you know, ten man-years dedicated in that condensed amount of time.” That was his estimate for community effort across the game’s puzzles, not a measured total for the rabbit mural alone.
The same interview says the developers expected community-driven puzzle-solving, and that Adelman arranged a pre-release critics’ channel where players could share information and work together. This helps explain the collaborative context, but it does not establish a mural-specific developer statement or a verified headcount.
