These 50 classic PC games span DOS through the early 2000s, from adventure and role-playing games to strategy, racing, simulation, and action. They are worthwhile candidates to revisit—not a verified list of games that are all abandoned, unavailable, or free to download. “Abandonware” is an informal label, not permission to copy a game. Check for an authorized edition before you play.
How to use this list
The selections below are grouped by the kind of experience they offer rather than ranked as a single best-to-worst list. The years, genres, and reasons to revisit each game follow TechBloat’s 50-game guide and are editorial recommendations, not independent findings about legal status or current availability. A game that was once hard to find may return to sale, and availability can differ by edition and region.

Does “abandonware” mean a game is legal to download?
No. “Abandonware” has no legal meaning, and a game can remain protected by copyright even when it is old, out of print, or difficult to buy. DOSBox’s FAQ cautions that age-based community labeling does not establish that a game is actually abandoned. The U.S. Copyright Office advises that, absent clear information otherwise, most works should be assumed protected.
U.S. rules do include limited provisions for certain uses of lawfully acquired games, such as some personal local restoration when external authentication access has ceased and preservation by eligible libraries, archives, or museums under defined conditions. Those exceptions are not general permission to distribute games publicly. The Copyright Office’s section 117 FAQ also explains that archival copies of computer programs are conditional on lawful ownership and other limits; backup-copy rules do not authorize selling copies separately or distributing them to the public. This is U.S. guidance, not a determination of the law for every country or title.

How to find a safe, authorized way to play
- Check current authorized stores and rights-holder pages. Search for the exact title and edition before assuming it is unavailable; commercial availability can change.
- Check what a download site says about distribution rights. DOS Games Archive says it researches distribution rights and distinguishes shareware, freeware, demos, and authorized releases. That policy makes it a useful place to investigate, not proof that every game on this list is legally downloadable there.
- Match the compatibility route to the original platform. DOSBox focuses on DOS games and is a relevant route for many DOS-era releases. ScummVM supports many point-and-click adventures; some Windows 95/98 games may instead require a compatibility wrapper or virtual machine. These are general possibilities, not confirmation that every listed game works through them on a current operating system.
DOS Games Archive reports a catalog of 1,667 DOS games on its About page, accessed in 2026. That is the archive’s self-reported figure, not an independently audited count.

Is abandonware legal to download and play?
