Personality helps shape how a villager is characterized and interacts with island life, but the available official guidance does not map every schedule, reaction, or DIY recipe to a specific type.
How many villager personality types are in ACNH?
There are eight commonly listed types. Guides often associate Lazy, Jock, Cranky, and Smug with male villagers, and Normal, Peppy, Snooty, and Sisterly with female villagers. Those are guide classifications, not a complete account of every villager or a statement about player identity.
The Sisterly type also appears under other names: Nintendo Life reports that the official guide calls it “Big Sister,” while “sisterly” and the Japanese-derived term “uchi” are also used. These labels refer to the same category, not separate personalities.
What personality changes in island life?
Personality is a framework for a villager’s characterization and dialogue. A secondary guide also describes it as affecting daily schedules, hobbies, and the reactions villagers teach. Nintendo’s beginner guidance says a resident’s home decor reflects their personality and notes that a resident may share a DIY recipe if visited at the right time.

Nintendo’s public pages do not provide an exhaustive personality-by-personality list of dialogue, schedules, reactions, or recipes. So personality is useful when choosing the kinds of villagers and interactions you enjoy, but the evidence here does not establish that a particular type is required to obtain a specific recipe or reaction.

How to choose villagers for your island
If you are comparing villagers or planning an island roster, consider three things: the personality and dialogue feel you prefer, the villager’s appearance and home style, and whether you want a broader mix of interactions. Nintendo says home decor reflects a resident’s personality, so a villager’s house can be part of the choice as well.
You do not need to treat a particular roster as a proven requirement for all reactions or DIY recipes. The official guidance reviewed here does not establish that every personality type must be present to access those rewards.

- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
Ways to build relationships with residents
Nintendo’s neighbor tips recommend general relationship-building activities such as talking with residents daily, sending letters and gifts, celebrating birthdays, and helping when a resident asks for assistance. These are general ways to engage with island neighbors, not rules tied to a particular personality type.
