51keyboard.dll belongs to Corel WordPerfect, not to Windows. If Windows says 51keyboard.dll is missing, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the exact WordPerfect edition that is trying to load it.
This is an application DLL associated with the WordPerfect(R) 11 – WP 5.1 DOS Toolkit and related classic WordPerfect keyboard functionality. The “DOS Toolkit” label refers to WordPerfect 5.1-compatible keyboard commands and classic-mode features. It does not mean that Windows needs a separate modern DOS runtime.
Identify the WordPerfect installation first
Before copying anything, establish which WordPerfect executable is producing the error. Older PCs often contain more than one edition or an installation left behind after an upgrade.
| What to check | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Program name | The affected WordPerfect edition |
| Shortcut target | Which executable Windows is launching |
Programs folder |
Where the matching 51keyboard.dll should normally be |
| File Properties | Whether the DLL belongs to the same installation |
| Windows Security history | Whether antivirus removed or quarantined it |
Typical legitimate locations include:
C:Program FilesWordPerfect Office 11Programs51Keyboard.dll
C:Program FilesCorelWordPerfect Office X5Programs51Keyboard.dll
C:Program FilesCorelWordPerfect Office X8Programs51Keyboard.dll
The parent folder varies by release, language, edition, and installation choices. Public inventories show the filename in WordPerfect Office 11, X3, X4, X5, X7, and X8 installations, but that does not prove that the binary is interchangeable between releases.

To inspect the shortcut:
- Right-click the WordPerfect shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
- Open that folder in File Explorer and look for a
Programssubfolder.
If the shortcut points to a different edition than expected, repair the installation named by that path. Do not repair one WordPerfect release and then copy its DLL into another.
What the error means
You may see any of these messages:
The program can't start because 51keyboard.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
51keyboard.dll was not found.
Error loading 51keyboard.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
The code execution cannot proceed because 51keyboard.dll was not found.
51keyboard.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
Failed to load 51keyboard.dll.
The wording changes with the executable, Windows version, and failure type. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent. The file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing, blocked, corrupted, or the wrong architecture.
The same general repair path still applies: identify the WordPerfect installation, then repair that installation rather than replacing Windows files.
Fix 1: Repair WordPerfect from Windows
Repair is the best first step because it can restore the DLL along with installer records, related modules, and configuration data.
Recommended Free Tools
Windows 10 and Windows 11 repair path
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for WordPerfect Office.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the matching entry.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, depending on what the installer exposes.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Choose Repair when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch WordPerfect from its original shortcut.
Some older WordPerfect installers do not expose repair through Settings. Use Control Panel instead:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the correct WordPerfect Office entry.
- Choose Change or Repair.
- Complete the installer.
- Restart the computer.
If repair succeeds, confirm that 51keyboard.dll has returned to the matching WordPerfect Programs folder. Then start the same executable that previously failed.
If repair is unavailable, the installer is damaged, or the process asks for installation media, continue with the original licensed CD, installer files, or a legitimate Corel account download. Use the same edition and language as the installed product.
Do not use a WordPerfect 11 DLL to repair X3, X5, X7, X8, or another release. The filename may be identical while the surrounding files and expected interfaces differ.
Fix 2: Reinstall the matching WordPerfect edition
If repair does not restore the file, reinstall the affected WordPerfect product.
Before uninstalling, make a note of:
- The exact product name and edition.
- The installation folder.
- Any serial number or account information.
- The location of your WordPerfect documents and templates.
- Custom keyboard, macro, and configuration files.
Then:
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected WordPerfect Office entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Run the original licensed installer as an administrator.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Install the same WordPerfect edition.
- Apply the correct service pack for that release.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test WordPerfect before restoring custom settings.
For an older WordPerfect Office release, current Windows compatibility is not guaranteed. Corel’s current product requirements apply to current WordPerfect releases and should not be treated as confirmation that WordPerfect Office 11 is fully supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If the old application still fails after a clean reinstall, use a compatible older Windows environment or a virtual machine rather than replacing unrelated Windows DLLs.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove an application DLL after an update, scan, or false positive. Check quarantine before downloading anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
51keyboard.dllor the WordPerfect installation. - Expand the entry and inspect the file path.
Only consider restoring the file if all of these conditions are true:
- The file was inside the genuine WordPerfect installation directory.
- WordPerfect came from licensed media or a legitimate Corel download.
- The file was not obtained from a DLL archive.
- The installation and system pass current antivirus scans.
- The file belongs to the WordPerfect edition you are repairing.
If those conditions are not met, leave the file quarantined and reinstall WordPerfect from trusted media. Restoring a malicious or modified DLL can expose the whole system, and Microsoft warns that a restored threat may be detected again.
After any restore:
- Run a full scan in Windows Security.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch WordPerfect.
- If the error returns, repair or reinstall the application instead of repeatedly restoring the file.
Do not disable antivirus broadly to make WordPerfect start.

Fix 4: Check for mixed installations and wrong architecture
A 32-bit WordPerfect application generally needs its own 32-bit application DLL, even when Windows 10 or Windows 11 is 64-bit. The operating system’s architecture does not make every DLL interchangeable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The correct rule is to use the DLL supplied by the matching WordPerfect installer. Do not assume that a file labeled x64 is correct. Public metadata for this filename is inconsistent, and reported version or size information is not definitive for every WordPerfect release.
Search for all copies:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- Search for:
51keyboard.dll
- Wait for the search to finish.
- Right-click each result and select Open file location.
- Compare each location with the executable path from the WordPerfect shortcut.
A valid copy should normally be under the relevant WordPerfect installation, usually its Programs directory. A copy in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not evidence of a correct installation.
Also inspect the shortcut’s Start in field under Properties. A shortcut or launcher pointing to an old WordPerfect directory can produce confusing results when several releases are installed.
Do not:
- Add WordPerfect directories to the global
PATH. - Overwrite one release’s DLL with another release’s copy.
- Put the file in both system folders.
- Rename another DLL to
51keyboard.dll.
Fix 5: Test permissions and a clean Windows profile
A damaged user profile or restricted folder permissions can prevent WordPerfect from loading its own files.
First test the application with administrator privileges:
- Right-click the WordPerfect shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator temporarily.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch WordPerfect.
If that works, the problem may involve permissions, configuration files, or installer registration rather than a missing DLL. Do not leave elevated operation enabled permanently unless necessary.
You can also test another Windows account:
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Choose Other users or Family & other users.
- Add a local test account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Launch WordPerfect.
If WordPerfect works there, back up your documents and custom settings, then reset or rename the original WordPerfect user configuration files. Corel’s startup troubleshooting guidance covers restoring factory defaults for WordPerfect configuration problems.
Do not delete custom templates, macros, or keyboard files without making a backup first.
Fix 6: Address broader Windows component corruption
51keyboard.dll is an application file, not a protected Windows system component. DISM and SFC normally do not recreate a missing WordPerfect DLL. Use them when Windows itself shows broader corruption, such as broken built-in apps, update failures, crashes, or damaged system features.
Open an elevated terminal:
- Open Start.
- Type Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click the result.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test WordPerfect again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC when repairing Windows components. These commands may correct Windows-side corruption, but they are not a substitute for repairing an application-owned file.
If you are tired of repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows findings, while repair requires the full version. For this particular error, reinstalling the matching WordPerfect product remains the definitive fix.
If DISM or SFC reports errors that it cannot repair, review the Windows repair result and address the operating-system problem separately. Do not download 51keyboard.dll to compensate for a failed system scan.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 7: Do not chase drivers or common runtimes first
Graphics drivers, chipset drivers, Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET are not the normal source of this particular file. 51keyboard.dll is associated with WordPerfect’s application installation, not a Windows graphics or hardware component.
If WordPerfect fails alongside widespread display, audio, or device problems, update the affected hardware driver through the device manufacturer or Windows Update:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For a clean driver reinstall:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Choose the option to remove driver software only if you have a replacement driver ready.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the manufacturer’s driver.
Manually comparing hardware IDs and hunting through driver packages can be time-consuming when several devices are stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues; its free scan identifies findings, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Updating a driver still will not replace the missing WordPerfect DLL, so repair WordPerfect when this is the only affected application.

Usually, no.
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for restoring missing application files.

Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 51keyboard.dll
If the DLL is not a registration-based COM or ActiveX component, Windows may report:
The module "51keyboard.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
There is no established Corel instruction requiring this file to be registered. It is an application-private WordPerfect module, so repair or reinstall the matching product instead.
Manual copying: the only case where it may be reasonable
Manual copying is appropriate only as a controlled recovery step when:
- The source is your own matching installation media or verified backup.
- The source belongs to the same WordPerfect edition and language.
- The service-pack level matches.
- The destination is the exact
Programsfolder used by the failing executable. - The file is scanned before use.
Even then, repair is preferable. WordPerfect may also need dependencies, installer records, registry information, or configuration data that a single copied DLL cannot restore.
If you do copy from verified media, keep the original filename and place it only in the matching WordPerfect folder. Restart Windows and test the application. If the message changes to a dependency or entry-point error, stop copying files and reinstall the product.
What not to do
Avoid these common but unsafe responses:
- Downloading
51keyboard.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Copying the file into
System32. - Copying it into
SysWOW64. - Placing copies in both system folders.
- Using a “DLL fixer” or registry cleaner.
- Renaming another DLL.
- Registering it blindly with
regsvr32. - Mixing WordPerfect 11 files with X-series files.
- Disabling antivirus to force the program to start.
- Assuming an x64-labeled copy is correct.
- Running SFC and expecting it to restore a third-party application file.
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, belong to the wrong WordPerfect release, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another installation component is missing. The safe sources are the original licensed WordPerfect media, a legitimate Corel account download, or a verified backup from the same installation.
If the repair still fails
Use this order:
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm the shortcut points to the intended WordPerfect executable.
- Search for duplicate
51keyboard.dllfiles. - Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Repair the matching WordPerfect installation again.
- Apply the correct service pack for that release.
- Test with a new Windows user account.
- Restore WordPerfect settings to factory defaults.
- Run Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Use the original installer in a supported older Windows environment or virtual machine.
If the installer itself will not repair or uninstall, Windows provides a Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter for blocked installation, update, and removal operations.
FAQ
Is 51keyboard.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a third-party application DLL associated with Corel WordPerfect and its WordPerfect 5.1-compatible keyboard and classic-mode functionality.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Which program installed it?
The associated product is Corel WordPerfect Office, particularly the WordPerfect 5.1 DOS Toolkit functionality included with WordPerfect Office 11 and later WordPerfect Office releases.
Should I download 51keyboard.dll?
No. Reinstall or repair WordPerfect from matching licensed media or a legitimate Corel download. A random replacement may be malicious, incompatible, or incomplete.
Where should the file be?
Normally inside the relevant WordPerfect installation directory, usually its Programs folder. It does not belong in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is it shared across all WordPerfect versions?
The same filename appears in several releases, but that does not prove binary identity. Use the file supplied with the exact installed edition, language, service-pack level, and architecture.
Why does Windows say the DLL is missing when I can see it?
The named file may be present while a dependency is missing or blocked. A wrong executable path, incomplete installation, antivirus action, or architecture mismatch can produce the same loader message.
Does regsvr32 apply?
Normally no. Registration is not the usual repair for this application-private WordPerfect module.
Will Windows 11 or Windows 10 run WordPerfect Office 11?
It may run with compatibility limitations, but current support information for newer WordPerfect releases does not establish full support for WordPerfect Office 11. If repair succeeds but the legacy program still fails, use a compatible older Windows environment rather than replacing Windows DLLs.
