The best Minecraft pickaxe enchantments for a versatile survival tool are Efficiency V, Unbreaking III, and Mending I. Add Fortune III when you want eligible extra drops, or Silk Touch I when you want to collect the mined block itself. Since those collection goals differ, the sixth recommendation is practical: keep a second pickaxe for the other mode.
The exact levels below are those listed in Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference; the official sources cited here do not establish that every mechanic or acquisition detail is identical in Java Edition.
What enchantments should I put on my pickaxe?
For an everyday survival pickaxe, prioritize speed, durability support, and repair. Then choose a collection enchantment to match what you are mining.
| Recommendation | Target level | What it does | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Efficiency | V | Increases block-breaking speed when you use the proper tool. | General mining and faster block breaking. |
| Unbreaking | III | Reduces durability damage. | Helping the pickaxe last longer between repairs. |
| Mending | I | Repairs the item using experience. | Supporting long-term use when the item receives experience. |
| Fortune | III | Increases certain item drop chances from blocks. | When you want eligible drops rather than the mined block itself. |
| Silk Touch | I | Makes mined blocks drop as blocks rather than converting into other items or blocks. | When you need to collect a block in its mined form. |
| Second pickaxe | Use the alternate collection enchantment | Keeps a separate tool ready for the other collection goal. | When both Fortune and Silk Touch outcomes matter in your routine. |
Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation describes these effects and eligible tools in its Introduction to Enchantments. Its enchant command reference lists maximum levels of Efficiency V, Fortune III, Unbreaking III, Silk Touch I, and Mending I. That command page was updated in 2023, so treat its level list as a documented reference rather than a guarantee that no later edition changes have occurred.

How the five enchantments help
1. Efficiency V: break blocks faster
Efficiency increases a tool’s block-breaking speed, provided it is the proper tool for the block. For a fully upgraded general-use pickaxe, V is the target listed in Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference. It improves speed; it does not change what a block drops.
2. Unbreaking III: reduce durability damage
Unbreaking reduces durability damage, helping the pickaxe last longer. It does not make the tool indestructible, so pair it with Mending if you want experience-based repair as well.

3. Mending I: repair with experience
Mending uses experience to repair the enchanted item. It supports ongoing tool use, but it does not increase mining speed or block drops. Microsoft lists Mending at level I in the Bedrock command reference.
4. Fortune III: favor eligible item drops
Fortune increases drops from some blocks; Minecraft Help describes the effect more specifically as improving certain item drop chances. It is the right choice when the block’s drop rules support the items you want. Do not assume it increases every resource or affects every block the same way.

5. Silk Touch I: collect the block itself
Silk Touch makes mined blocks drop as blocks rather than converting into other items or blocks. Use it when the block in its mined form is what you need. The broad description does not establish identical behavior for every block, so check the specific block’s drop rules when the exact result matters.
Fortune or Silk Touch: which should you use?

- Choose Fortune when you want eligible item drops and the block’s rules support the desired outcome.
- Choose Silk Touch when you want to collect the mined block itself.
- Carry both tools if you regularly need both outcomes. In ordinary survival play, Fortune and Silk Touch are commonly treated as incompatible on one pickaxe; a dedicated tool for each avoids repeatedly changing your setup. This is a practical recommendation, not a claim about commands, mods, or edge cases.
The official descriptions are general rather than a block-by-block drop guide. For an individual block, its behavior—not the enchantment name alone—determines the useful choice. Microsoft’s overview is available in All Enchantments in Minecraft.

Microsoft’s Bedrock creator guide describes enchanting-table use, enchanted books offered by librarian villagers, and an anvil for combining an item with an enchanted book or another identical item. It also says the enchanting table costs experience points and lapis lazuli and can be used only on items with no enchantments. These are Bedrock source details; verify the current rules for your edition before relying on a particular acquisition method or trade.

Does the same recommendation apply to Java and Bedrock?
The official reference used here for effects, eligible equipment, and broad enchanting methods is specifically for Bedrock Edition. The gathered official sources do not provide a complete current comparison of Java and Bedrock pickaxe mechanics, so the listed effect descriptions and maximum command levels should not be read as proof that every detail is identical across editions. If you play Java, check edition-specific rules for the enchantment behavior or acquisition method you care about.
