These six are among the most notable, from stolen source code and nearly complete builds to confidential footage, story documents and employee data.
What makes a video game leak “big”?
A few screenshots, a playable build and a cache of employee records are all leaks, but their consequences are not comparable. A useful way to understand the cases below is to ask what was exposed, when it surfaced and what the disclosure put at risk. This is an editorial selection, not a measured ranking by reach, cost or development impact.
Six notable video game leaks
1. Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source (2003–04)
In 2003, Valve’s network was breached and source code, maps, models and playable development builds for Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source were stolen and leaked, according to PC Gamer’s 2026 feature. That was a particularly broad exposure: code and playable material reveal more than a trailer or a few images.
Half-Life 2 had originally been planned for September 2003 and was released in November 2004, a 13-month interval. Those dates establish the gap, but do not by themselves prove the breach caused the delay.

2. Grand Theft Auto VI (September 2022)
On September 18, 2022, around 90 videos showing in-development Grand Theft Auto VI footage appeared online, Axios reported. Some clips appeared to show builds from 2021. Rockstar confirmed unauthorized access to confidential information during a network intrusion; the footage was not a view of the finished game’s graphics or final build. Axios reported the scale and timing, while Ars Technica reproduced Rockstar’s response: “We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way.”
Rockstar said it did not anticipate disruption to its live services or long-term effects on ongoing development. That was the company’s assessment, not an independently verified impact finding. The unfinished footage also illustrates why leaked clips should not be treated as a review of a game that is still being made: presentation and assets can change through development, as Axios explained.

3. Insomniac Games (December 2023)
A ransomware group released more than 1.67 terabytes of data connected to Insomniac Games, including an early build of Marvel’s Wolverine, personal information, sales data and future studio plans. This figure and description are reported in the Insomniac Games article on Wikipedia, a secondary source. The case stands out because the exposure went beyond game development material to include personal data. The scale of the archive should not be mistaken for a directly comparable measure of harm: the kinds of information involved carry different risks.
4. Crysis 2 (2011)
About a month before its release, a nearly complete Crysis 2 build leaked, according to PC Gamer. It reportedly included multiplayer and online authentication keys, and was playable from beginning to end despite bugs and placeholder assets. A usable build can expose far more of a game than selected footage and can enable unauthorized distribution. The source of the leak was never publicly identified; speculation about who was responsible is not established fact.

5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (before release)
Internal documents from an employee’s Google Drive became public before The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched, revealing information about its story, enemies, quests and endings, PC Gamer reported. Unlike a playable build, planning documents can give away narrative and design decisions without showing a finished game. Their spoiler value can be substantial even when they are not themselves playable.
6. Mass Effect 3 (before release)
An early Mass Effect 3 build leaked onto Xbox Live, and dataminers extracted an unfinished script, according to PC Gamer. The material prompted public reactions while the game was still in development. PC Gamer reports that BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka said the studio took fan feedback seriously, and that some rewrites to the final script may have followed responses to the leak. The connection is possible, not a confirmed account of specific changes.

What these leaks show
- The format matters. Footage, source code, a playable build, story documents and personal records expose different things and create different risks.
- Timing changes the meaning. A pre-release build or early footage can be incomplete; it should not be treated as a definitive picture of the finished game.
- Separate confirmation from impact claims. For GTA VI, Rockstar confirmed unauthorized access, while its view of expected disruption to development and live services remained the company’s own assessment.
