First check whether Dolphin is maintaining full emulation speed. Audio that breaks into gaps when the game slows down is usually a performance symptom; persistent crackling or distortion while the game stays at full speed points toward a different problem, such as a build, backend, or game-specific DSP issue. The right fix depends on which sound you hear and which game and Dolphin build you use.
1. Check whether the game is running at full speed
Watch Dolphin’s emulation-speed indicator while the audio breaks up. If speed drops below full speed at the same time, the emulator is not producing the game’s audio quickly enough, so you hear gaps. Dolphin’s FAQ describes this as a performance issue rather than an audio-output fault: Dolphin Emulator FAQ.
This distinction matters: an audio gap that tracks slowdown is different from a steady crackle, static, or distortion that continues while emulation remains at full speed. Note what the speed indicator shows when the symptom occurs before changing audio settings.
2. Address slow emulation before tuning sound
If the sound breaks up only when speed falls, focus on restoring full-speed emulation. Close unnecessary workloads and review Dolphin’s performance guidance for relevant controls. Some advanced performance options have trade-offs, so avoid changing emulation settings indiscriminately; use the guide to understand what a control affects before applying it: Dolphin Emulator Performance Guide.

When the game sustains full speed, the FAQ’s performance-related explanation for audio gaps no longer accounts for a persistent crackle. Move on to build, backend, and title-specific checks instead.
3. Try time-stretched audio if slowdown causes gaps
Recent Dolphin development builds offer time-stretched audio, which spreads currently output audio across gaps during slowdown so it sounds more natural. Dolphin notes the trade-off: “Time-stretched audio will “stretch” the currently output audio over the gaps, allowing the game to sound more natural at the cost of some audio latency.” See the Dolphin FAQ for the feature’s explanation.

Use this as a way to smooth the perceived gaps, not as a fix for the performance problem causing them. It adds audio latency, and availability can depend on the Dolphin build; it is not a general remedy for persistent static or distortion at full speed.
4. Update Dolphin if crackling persists at full speed
Check whether you are using a current Dolphin build before assuming the game or your audio hardware is at fault. Dolphin has fixed genuine emulator-side DSP-HLE crackling and static in the past: its October 2014 progress report documented a missing volume-clamping fix that addressed static bugs in Wii, GameCube, and WiiWare titles.

That historical fix is evidence that emulator bugs can cause these symptoms; it does not establish that a 2014 defect is responsible for a current issue. A newer build may contain relevant fixes, but if the sound remains faulty, continue with targeted checks.
5. Treat DSP-HLE and DSP-LLE as a title-specific test
For most players, Dolphin’s default DSP mode is the appropriate choice. Dolphin’s Performance Guide discusses DSP-HLE and DSP-LLE and cautions against changing advanced options without a specific reason.

DSP-LLE can help in particular compatibility or audio cases, but it is not a universal crackling fix. Dolphin’s December 2025 Release 2512 report describes a title-specific case in which DSP-LLE resolved broken audio, followed by a regression fix. If you test another DSP mode, compare the same game and scene, then restore the default if it does not improve the symptom.

Dolphin has documented changes and differences among audio backends, including Cubeb and a WASAPI exclusive mode. The relevant choices depend on your platform and build; the October 2019 progress report documents backend work but does not prescribe one backend as best for every system.

If the issue affects one game, look up that title’s Dolphin wiki entry and check for known audio defects or recommended settings. The Dolphin FAQ directs players to game-specific information. Use the entry for your game and note whether the symptom changes at full speed; settings that help one title may not suit another.
