Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Start by checking the crash report or log, then test likely causes—such as mods, runtime settings, graphics issues, or conflicting software—one at a time. These steps are for Minecraft Java Edition; the most useful evidence is the log from the launch that failed.
What Minecraft “Exit Code: 0” means
The code by itself is not a diagnosis. A Mojang issue report about Java Edition 1.17.1, filed in 2021, was classified by the tracker as a technical-support issue, not a confirmed game bug. Mojang issue moderator Greymagic27 wrote: “This is a technical support issue; this site is for bug reports only. We do not have the resources to provide you with technical support.” That explains the tracker’s scope; it does not identify the cause of the crash. Read the Mojang issue report.

When Minecraft crashes on startup or exits before the game opens, use the log to narrow down what happened rather than assuming the code points to one particular fix.
1. Find the crash report or latest log
First, capture the evidence from the failed launch. Look for a crash report, latest.log, or the launcher log. If Minecraft did not create a crash report, the log is still useful: community support discussions ask players to provide it when no report exists. See the support discussion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Note the time of the failed launch so you can identify the relevant log.
- Look near the end for the final error and for references to mods, Java, or rendering.
- Keep the report or log available while testing. If you ask for help, share the relevant file through an appropriate support channel and avoid posting personal information.
2. Test a clean, unmodded profile
Launch the same Minecraft version in a clean profile without a mod loader or mods. This separates problems with the modded setup from problems that also occur in a vanilla launch.
- If the clean profile launches: add the mod loader, then reintroduce mods in small groups. Check that each mod targets the selected Minecraft version and loader.
- If the clean profile also crashes: the problem is not isolated to the mods you removed. Use the log to choose the next test.
Outdated mods are one possible cause mentioned in a Mojang issue discussion, but that does not mean mods are responsible for every Exit Code 0. The issue report concerns Java Edition 1.17.1. For Forge, use its official download source, files.minecraftforge.net, rather than an unofficial download site.

3. Check the selected Minecraft version and runtime
Confirm that the launcher is starting the game version you intend to play and that the profile’s runtime configuration has not been changed unexpectedly. A 2021 forum user reported that manually setting the Java executable fixed their own installation, but that is an anecdote—not a current, universal launcher procedure. Read the forum thread.
Do not change Java settings just because the exit code is 0. Look for a runtime-related error in the log first, and use instructions appropriate to your launcher, Minecraft version, operating system, and Java setup.

4. Investigate graphics errors before changing drivers
If the log points to rendering or graphics initialization, check the driver and support information for your exact graphics hardware and operating system. Community reports mention NVIDIA and graphics-driver problems, but they do not establish that a driver is the cause in every case. See the reported cases.
Use the graphics vendor’s current support material for any driver change. Avoid installing a driver from an unrelated download site, and do not treat a graphics-driver update as a diagnostic shortcut when the log points elsewhere.

5. Retest without potentially conflicting software
Close background applications that could plausibly interfere with the launch, then try Minecraft again. A creator’s troubleshooting list from 2021 also suggested a clean boot, but that older, non-official advice does not establish a reliable fix. See the troubleshooting video.
A clean boot is an optional diagnostic for experienced users, not a first step. If you use one, record the startup settings you change and restore normal startup settings afterward. If closing an application changes the result, test applications individually to identify which one matters.

6. Reinstall only after backing up and testing simpler causes
Reinstallation appears in older troubleshooting advice, but the available reports do not establish it as a dependable fix for Exit Code 0. Before changing or removing game files, back up your worlds and save copies of the crash report or log. Try the lower-risk checks above first; reinstalling is more disruptive and may not address a problem caused by a mod, runtime configuration, driver, or other software.
Which fix should you try first?
The safest order is to gather evidence, compare a clean profile, and then investigate only the cause suggested by the log. This is a risk-based diagnostic order, not a tested guarantee of success.
| Action | Risk and reversibility | When it is useful |
|---|---|---|
| Read the crash report or log | Low risk; does not change the installation | First step for any startup crash |
| Launch a clean, unmodded profile | Low risk; keeps the test separate from the modded profile | When mods or a mod loader are involved |
| Adjust runtime settings or graphics drivers | System- and version-specific; changes should follow evidence | When the log indicates a runtime or rendering problem |
| Close conflicting software or try a clean boot | Closing an app is easy to reverse; clean boot changes require care | When other software may be interfering |
| Reinstall the game | More disruptive; preserve worlds and logs first | Only after simpler, evidence-led checks |
When to seek help
If the clean profile still fails and the log does not point to a clear next step, ask in a Minecraft community-support channel and include the relevant log or crash report, your Minecraft version, operating system, and whether the installation is modded. Mojang’s issue tracker is for bug reports; its 1.17.1 report directs players seeking technical support to Community Support rather than treating the report as a confirmed game bug. See the tracker response.
