The best native FPS for Mac is Metro Exodus. If you want competitive multiplayer, use a cloud-gaming service for a supported Windows shooter such as Counter-Strike 2. For a classic campaign, choose BioShock Remastered or Metro 2033 Redux.
That distinction matters: some games run locally in macOS, while others stream from a remote Windows PC. This list labels every game accordingly, so you do not mistake cloud availability for native Mac support.

Native Mac, cloud gaming, and compatibility layers
Native Mac means the game runs locally in macOS without Windows or streaming. Cloud playable means the game runs on a remote server and your Mac receives a video stream while sending back your controls. A compatibility layer such as CrossOver, Whisky, Wine, or virtualization attempts to run a Windows version locally, but results vary by game, Mac, launcher, graphics API, and anti-cheat system.
Native games offer predictable input, offline play, and no stream compression. Cloud gaming opens the door to major Windows shooters while using little local storage, but it requires reliable internet and introduces latency. Compatibility layers are the least predictable choice, especially for ranked multiplayer.

1. Metro Exodus — best overall native Mac FPS

Metro Exodus is the strongest all-round choice if you want a substantial modern FPS that actually runs locally on a Mac. Its campaign combines gunfights, stealth, exploration, environmental storytelling, and survival systems across a post-apocalyptic journey.
The Mac App Store listing specifies macOS 10.15 or later, 16GB of RAM, approximately 76.8GB of storage, and Apple M1-based Macs among its recommended configurations. It lists 1080p/30fps on medium as a minimum performance target and 2K/45-plus fps on ultra as a recommended target. Those are the publisher’s listed targets, not guarantees for every M-series Mac.

Why play it: It has modern visuals and a richer, more exploratory structure than most native Mac shooters. Because it runs locally, it remains the best choice for offline play and avoids cloud input delay.
Main drawback: The download is large, the game is demanding, and its deliberate survival mechanics will not appeal to players seeking instant competitive matches. A fanless MacBook Air may also need sensible graphics settings for sustained sessions.

2. BioShock Remastered — best classic story FPS
Access: Native Mac App Store version
Best for: Narrative, exploration, atmosphere, and imaginative combat
Badges: Best classic campaign; best for older Macs, subject to current requirements
BioShock Remastered remains an excellent recommendation for anyone who wants a memorable single-player FPS rather than a live-service game. Its underwater setting, environmental storytelling, weapon variety, and ability combinations give it a stronger identity than a conventional corridor shooter.

The Mac App Store listing identifies it as Mac-only, lists Feral Interactive as the developer, gives an approximately 20GB size, and says it supports more than 100 gamepad models. The US price was $19.99 when checked on August 18, 2026.
Main drawback: It is a remaster of an older game, so do not buy it expecting contemporary competitive multiplayer or a new-generation presentation. Check the store page against your exact Mac before purchasing.

3. Metro 2033 Redux — best atmospheric budget campaign

Best for: Horror, stealth, survival systems, and a focused campaign

Do not interpret that listing as proof of a macOS version. The game is running remotely; your Mac is running the streaming client.
Main drawback: Small amounts of latency, jitter, or packet loss can affect aiming and peeking. Competitive players may reasonably prefer a less demanding native game over a streamed tactical shooter.
Get it: Check the current GeForce NOW catalog and connect the required game account.
5. Overwatch 2 — best hero shooter through cloud gaming
Access: Cloud gaming
Best for: Objective matches, character abilities, and approachable team play
Badges: Best streamed team shooter
Overwatch 2 is a more approachable online recommendation than a pure tactical shooter. Its heroes, roles, objectives, and shorter match structure provide variety for players who want team combat without using the same weapon every round.
NVIDIA lists Overwatch 2 in its cloud-service optimization material. Blizzard’s published system requirements are for Windows, so Mac play should be described as streaming rather than local installation.
Main drawback: Streaming can affect aim, ability timing, and visual clarity. The live-service model, matchmaking, balance, and monetization may also change over time.

6. Fortnite — best free-to-play Mac FPS option via cloud
Access: Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, or Amazon Luna
Best for: Battle royale, casual multiplayer, and free access
Badges: Best free option
Fortnite is not currently available as a native Mac game. Epic’s official support page identifies Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, and Amazon Luna as ways to play it on Mac.
That makes it an easy entry point for readers who want a large multiplayer ecosystem without installing a Windows game locally. It offers battle royale and other modes, but the experience depends on the selected cloud service, browser or app path, region, account connections, and input support.
Main drawback: Cloud play requires an active connection, and competitive performance depends heavily on latency and stream quality. Free-to-play describes the game, not necessarily every cloud-service tier or feature.

Apex Legends is the streamed choice for players who prefer fast movement, squad coordination, and character abilities. NVIDIA’s 2026 optimization material lists it among games supported by its cloud service.
It offers a very different feel from Fortnite: the emphasis is on mobility, gunplay, legends, and squad fights rather than building and sandbox systems.

Is cloud gaming good enough for FPS games?
It can be good enough for casual and some competitive play, but it is not equivalent to running a game locally. Performance depends on the route between your Mac and the data center, not just your advertised download speed.
NVIDIA recommends latency below 80ms to its data center and lists these bandwidth targets for GeForce NOW:
- 15Mbps for up to 720p/60fps
- 25Mbps for up to 1080p/60fps
- 35Mbps for QHD or ultrawide at up to 120fps
- 45Mbps for 4K at up to 120fps
Use Ethernet where practical or a reliable 5GHz Wi-Fi connection. Watch for jitter, packet loss, congestion, and resolution drops. A wired connection and a nearby data center matter more to an FPS than an impressive peak download number. NVIDIA’s Mac requirements page lists macOS 10.15 or later and Macs introduced in 2009 or later, though the game and service still determine the actual experience.
Which Mac is suitable?
- Apple silicon: An M-series Mac is generally the safest starting point for current native Mac software, but compatibility is game-specific. Metro Exodus explicitly lists Apple M1-based Macs among recommended configurations.
- Intel Macs: “Mac compatible” does not mean every Intel model performs equally. Graphics hardware, macOS version, and memory remain important.
- MacBook Air: A fanless Air may handle a native game acceptably but can reduce sustained performance during long sessions as heat builds. This is a thermal consideration, not a universal frame-rate guarantee.
- Memory: Do not assume 8GB is enough for every modern title. Metro Exodus specifically lists 16GB of RAM.
- Storage: Keep substantial free space for large native installs; Metro Exodus lists approximately 76.8GB.
- Displays: An external high-resolution monitor increases the rendering workload for native games and may increase the required cloud bandwidth for streamed output.
Setup checklist
- Check the exact Mac model, chip, RAM, macOS version, and available storage.
- For native games, use the official Mac App Store or publisher storefront and read the current requirements.
- For cloud games, verify the title is currently in the service catalog and that your region and account are supported.
- Prefer Ethernet or stable 5GHz Wi-Fi; test latency and stream stability before paying for a subscription.
- Use a dedicated gaming mouse and a responsive keyboard. NVIDIA notes that the Apple Magic Mouse lacks dedicated left/right buttons and a conventional scroll wheel that games commonly need.
- Use a controller where a cloud service or game offers better controller support, but do not assume every browser path supports mouse and keyboard equally well.
- For long native sessions, keep the Mac ventilated and connected to power.
What about CrossOver, Whisky, or Windows virtualization?
These tools can expand the catalog, but they should be treated as experiments rather than guaranteed solutions. A Windows FPS may fail because of anti-cheat, a launcher, Apple silicon architecture, graphics APIs, or a publisher’s platform policy. Kernel-level and platform-specific anti-cheat is particularly likely to block unofficial Windows-on-Mac setups.
Do not choose a compatibility layer for ranked multiplayer unless the game’s current anti-cheat behavior and publisher policy are verified. For a dependable experience, choose a native title or a supported cloud route instead.
Storefront details to check
A Mac App Store purchase is not automatically interchangeable with a Steam purchase. Before buying, check cross-save, cross-buy, DLC ownership, cloud saves, multiplayer servers, controller support, updates, and refund terms. The same caution applies to cloud services: catalog availability does not necessarily transfer ownership or progression between storefronts.
The short answer
Choose Metro Exodus for the best modern native Mac FPS, BioShock Remastered for a classic campaign, or Counter-Strike 2 through cloud gaming for competitive rounds. Choose Fortnite if free-to-play battle royale matters most, but remember that it is streamed on Mac rather than installed natively.
