To find Crafting Skill Magazines in 7 Days to Die, search every mailbox, newspaper box, bookshelf and bookstore you pass, then add category-related points of interest (POIs), Trader inventories, quest rewards and—especially for Forge Ahead—destroyed workstations in Trader compounds. Open the Crafting Skills screen to identify the series tied to the recipe you need, and use its associated perk to make that series more likely when a magazine drops.

What Crafting Skill Magazines do
7 Days to Die uses a Learn by Reading system for crafting progression. Finding and reading the relevant magazine advances its Crafting Skill. As that skill advances, recipes unlock and the quality of items you craft improves. Magazines are therefore not just collectible reading material: they are one of the main progression gates for workstations, equipment and production recipes.

Each Crafting Skill has a magazine series and an associated perk. The Crafting Skills screen shows which series supports the recipe or workstation you are pursuing. Check that screen before a loot run so you are searching for a defined target rather than opening containers at random.
Best places to find magazines
Mailboxes and newspaper boxes
Search outdoor mailboxes and newspaper boxes on every street you clear. They are quick to check and can add magazine rolls without requiring a full building clear. Their value is consistency: a route that checks them while you travel produces extra attempts at very little time cost.

- Explore – Huge, rich environments, with unique biomes and worlds up to 100 square kilometres in size.
- Craft – Handcraft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, with hundreds of recipes and schematics.
- Build – Design your fort with traps, electricity, auto turrets, and gadgets to survive in a fully destructible and mouldable world.
- Cooperate or Compete – Work together to build settlements or against each other in a wasteland where zombies and outlaws rule the land.
- A must-have for collectors and fans of Open-World Survival Horror, the 7 Days to Die – Console Edition Survival Bundle includes the following: An exclusive Artbook with over 100 pages showcasing never-before-seen illustrations of the zombie apocalypse, a CD featuring the haunting Original Soundtrack (OST) of the game, a double-sided poster, Fine art prints x3, Sticker sheets x 3, the physical game, and a collectible tuck-in box housing all the contents.
Bookshelves and book-heavy buildings
Bookshelves are the core general-purpose source. Search shelves in homes, offices and other buildings instead of skipping them after finding one useful item. A Book Store is particularly attractive because the official 7 Days to Die Book Store page lists 32 bookshelves in that POI. That concentration gives you many container checks in one location, although your actual clear time depends on the building layout, enemies, difficulty and how quickly you loot.
Bookstores and other dense book POIs
When you want the highest number of bookshelf searches per stop, prioritize bookstores and similar book-dense POIs. Mark them on your map and include them in a repeatable town route. A dense building is useful even when it does not guarantee your chosen series: every relevant container is another chance to roll a magazine.

Category-linked POIs
Some magazines can appear in locations associated with the item category they cover. If you need a weapon, armor, vehicle or food-related series, clear POIs that visibly match that category, then use ordinary bookshelves and book containers for additional attempts. The category connection changes where it is sensible to spend your time; it does not make a particular copy guaranteed.
Traders
Inspect each Trader’s inventory whenever you visit. Buy copies that match your target series when they are available. Trader stock is an additional source rather than a replacement for looting, so keep checking inventories as your normal travel or quest loop brings you back to a compound.
Quest rewards
When a completed quest offers reward choices, look for a Crafting Skill Magazine Bundle. Choose the bundle when it supports your current objective and the other rewards are less valuable for your build. This is one of the most reliable ways to turn quest activity into targeted progression because the reward screen lets you make an explicit choice instead of relying entirely on container randomness.

Destroyed workstations in Trader compounds
Trader compounds can contain destroyed workstations that are worth searching. These containers are a specific opportunity for Forge Ahead, the series associated with workstation crafting. If Forge Ahead is your priority, inspect and loot those damaged stations whenever you enter a compound, in addition to checking the Trader’s inventory and quest rewards.

Use the following order when you need one series for a recipe or workstation. It combines the broadest sources with the locations that can be targeted more deliberately.
- Choose the series. Open the in-game Crafting Skills screen and identify the magazine series and associated perk connected to the recipe you need. Write down the target before leaving your base.
- Plan a compact circuit. Select a town or neighborhood containing a bookstore or several book-heavy buildings, plus mailboxes and newspaper boxes along the roads. A short, repeatable route is easier to maintain than wandering between isolated buildings.
- Clear the densest book POI first. Start with a bookstore when one is available. The official Book Store listing contains 32 bookshelves, making it a strong single-stop source of rolls.
- Add category-linked buildings. After the book-heavy stop, clear POIs associated with your target’s item category. For example, a series supporting vehicles should lead you toward vehicle-related locations, while a food-oriented series favors food-related locations.
- Check every small book container on the way. Loot mailboxes, newspaper boxes and individual shelves rather than limiting yourself to large buildings. These quick checks add attempts with minimal detours.
- Visit a Trader. Inspect the current inventory for the series you want. If the compound contains destroyed workstations and Forge Ahead is your target, loot those containers before leaving.
- Run quests that pass through your route. At turn-in, inspect all reward choices and select a Crafting Skill Magazine Bundle when it is offered and fits your priority.
- Read the magazines you obtain. Reading is what advances the Crafting Skill and unlocks its recipes; carrying an unread copy does not provide that progression.
- Repeat after restocking opportunities. Return to Traders and quest boards as they become available, and use the next town route when you have exhausted the most convenient book containers.
How the associated perk changes your odds
The associated perk does not make magazines spawn in containers that otherwise would not roll one. Instead, it changes the type weighting when a magazine is found. According to the current official wiki page for Version 2.0 Stable, each perk level gives a 200% increased chance for the related magazine type, up to a cap of 1000% at five levels.
In practical terms, the perk helps your target series win more often among magazine types, but it does not increase the overall chance that a container produces any magazine at all. You still need to open many relevant containers. The most efficient approach is to combine the perk with high-density bookshelf routes, category-linked POIs, Trader checks and magazine-bundle quest rewards.
| Perk investment | Published weighting change for the associated type | What it does not change |
|---|---|---|
| Each level | 200% increased chance for the related magazine type | It does not raise the chance that a container produces a magazine |
| Five levels | 1000% maximum increase | It does not guarantee a copy or remove the need to loot |
Those percentages describe the type weighting published for the associated perk; they should not be read as a promise that five perk levels produce ten times as many magazines in every run.

Choosing between farming routes
No universal time-per-clear table is established for these locations. Your clear speed changes with POI tier, enemy density, character equipment, world settings and travel distance. Use the comparison below to choose a route based on the factor that matters most to you rather than an invented minute-by-minute estimate.
| Route | Container density | Series relevance | Reset or repeat opportunity | Risk and travel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Book Store | Very high; the official listing states 32 bookshelves | General magazine source; not guaranteed to favor one series | Not stated; depend on your game version and world settings | One concentrated building; combat and layout determine risk |
| Other book-heavy POIs | High, but exact shelf counts are not stated | General magazine source | Not stated | Usually efficient when grouped in a town; travel varies |
| Mailboxes and newspaper boxes | Low per container, high along streets | General magazine source | Not stated | Low risk and fast checks while traveling |
| Category-linked POIs | Varies by building | Potentially better alignment with the item category covered by your series | Not stated | Depends on POI tier, enemies and distance |
| Trader inventory | One inventory check per visit | Direct if the desired copy is listed | Check availability and restock behavior in your current version | Low combat risk inside the compound; travel required |
| Quest reward bundle | One reward decision per eligible quest | Direct when a Crafting Skill Magazine Bundle appears | Quest availability and reward choices vary | Quest objectives add travel and combat, but the reward is selectable |
| Destroyed Trader workstations | Limited containers within a compound | Specific Forge Ahead opportunity | Not stated | Convenient during Trader visits; do not treat it as a source for every series |
Examples by crafting goal
Unlocking workstation recipes
Set Forge Ahead as the target in the Crafting Skills screen. On your next Trader visit, search destroyed workstations in the compound, inspect the Trader’s inventory and complete quests that offer magazine bundles. Use bookstores and ordinary shelves as supplementary sources rather than waiting for one specific workstation container.
Improving weapons or armor
Identify the weapon- or armor-related series first. Clear POIs associated with that category, then sweep bookstores, shelves, mailboxes and newspaper boxes in the same district. The category-linked stop gives your route a deliberate focus; general book containers provide additional rolls when the specialist building does not produce the copy you need.
Advancing vehicle or food crafting
Use the same pattern: select the series, visit POIs connected with vehicles or food, and add a dense bookshelf route. Check Trader stock and choose a Crafting Skill Magazine Bundle at quest turn-in whenever it appears. Raising the associated perk improves the weighting toward your chosen type, but container volume still determines how many opportunities you receive.

Quest and Trader loop
Quests are most useful when they overlap with your loot route. Take a nearby quest, clear mailboxes and book containers during the trip, complete the objective, and inspect the reward choices carefully. A bundle can be worth more for an unfinished Crafting Skill than a generic reward that does not advance your immediate build.

At the Trader, perform the same short checklist every visit: inspect inventory, search destroyed workstations, then review the next available quests. Do not assume that a Trader visit alone will supply a complete series; its value is that it adds a direct purchase check and, for Forge Ahead, a distinctive container source to your normal travel loop.

Only searching large bookstores
Problem: You clear one bookstore and conclude that the target series is unavailable.
Fix: Treat the bookstore as a high-density opening stop, then continue through category-linked POIs, shelves, mailboxes, newspaper boxes, Trader stock and quests. The system uses multiple source types.
Confusing type weighting with spawn rate
Problem: You invest in the associated perk and expect every container to produce a magazine.
Fix: Remember that the perk changes which type is favored when a magazine appears. It does not increase the chance of a magazine appearing in the first place, so increase the number of containers you search.

Ignoring reward choices
Problem: You accept the first quest reward and lose a chance at a targeted bundle.
Fix: Pause at the reward screen, compare every option and select the Crafting Skill Magazine Bundle when it matches your current series and offers better progression than the alternatives.
Missing Forge Ahead containers
Problem: You visit a Trader but search only the shop inventory.
Fix: Inspect destroyed workstations inside the compound. They are a specific Forge Ahead opportunity and can be overlooked if you leave immediately after trading.
Planning around unverified reset assumptions
Problem: You base a route on a fixed respawn timer or a guaranteed inventory refresh.
Fix: The available published material does not establish universal reset frequencies. Track what your current game version and world settings actually provide, and use multiple source types instead of relying on one timer.

Exact loot weights, a complete series-by-series location table and platform-specific differences are not established in the available documentation. If your installed version differs from 2.0 Stable, confirm the current in-game Crafting Skills screen and live item behavior before planning a highly specific route.
