When 7 Days to Die multiplayer will not let you join a friend, check compatibility before changing network settings. The host and every player must use the same game version, and cross-platform play requires Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC). Mismatched mods, custom worlds, server branches, EOS settings or an over-filtered browser can hide a perfectly valid session. Once those checks pass, test the host’s session visibility, then work through connection, NAT, firewall and PC-file fixes.
Godlike.Host offers hosted 7 Days to Die servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Start with the facts that decide whether a join can work
Before anyone reinstalls the game, write down these details for every participant:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Platform: PC, PlayStation or Xbox.
- The exact game version or build displayed in the main menu.
- Whether the host is running a peer-to-peer world or a dedicated server.
- Whether crossplay is enabled.
- Whether EAC is enabled.
- Any exact error text, EOS message or missing-session symptom.
- Whether the world uses mods or custom-world files.
The official EOS troubleshooting guidance states: “Verify the server and all players are on the same Game version.” Treat that as a hard requirement, not a suggestion. A player on a different branch, an out-of-date dedicated server, or a console and PC using incompatible content can fail before a network connection is attempted.
Update every participant before testing again
Close the game on every machine and install the current update for the relevant platform. On a dedicated server, compare the server’s selected branch with the clients’ branch. A server that stayed on an older branch can remain visible while rejecting every join. If a recent patch has just launched, wait until the server software and all clients report the same release before changing saves or world files.

Remove compatibility blockers
For the first test, use an unmodded world. Disable or remove mods that are not installed identically on every player, and avoid a custom world while diagnosing cross-platform play. Crossplay is especially sensitive to unsupported mods and custom-world content; test with a standard world and the game’s normal files, then add modifications back one at a time after a successful connection.
Crossplay also requires EAC to be enabled. If one player starts the game with EAC disabled, a cross-platform session may not appear or may reject the connection even when the displayed game versions match.

A peer-to-peer world is hosted from the game client. It exists while the host is playing, and the host’s machine supplies the session. This is the simplest way to test multiplayer, but it is not an always-online server: when the host leaves, friends cannot continue joining that world.
Have the host create a discoverable session
- Start the multiplayer world as the host.
- Set the session visibility to Friends Only for a private test, or Public if the friend is not being found through the friends list.
- Leave the world running while the other player searches.
If the friend still cannot see it, do not rely only on the normal friends list. The official EOS instructions recommend opening the peer-to-peer tab and searching by the host’s SteamID or name. In the browser, remove restrictive filters: too many search conditions can hide the session even when it is online. Search with the fewest filters possible, confirm the host name, and try the join command again.
Use the peer-to-peer tab deliberately
- Open the multiplayer server browser.
- Select the Peer-to-peer tab.
- Search for the host by SteamID or the exact displayed name.
- Clear filters such as map, player count, region or other categories that could exclude the session.
- Confirm the host is still in the world, then select the matching result and join.
A Friends Only session is useful for a controlled test; a Public session helps determine whether the friends-list path is the problem. Switching visibility does not repair a version, EAC or mod mismatch, so perform the compatibility checks first.

Peer-to-peer versus a dedicated server
Choose the host type based on how you want the world to behave. The two options have different failure points and different configuration responsibilities.
| Consideration | Peer-to-peer world | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| When the world is online | Only while the host is playing | Can remain online independently of a player client |
| How friends join | Friends list, the peer-to-peer tab, or a SteamID/name search | Server-browser listing or the server’s join route |
| Cross-platform support | Requires compatible versions, EAC and supported crossplay content | Requires the server’s crossplay flags, supported settings and compatible client versions |
| Configuration control | Mostly limited to the host’s session and world settings | Administrator controls branch, EAC, EOS and player-count settings |
| Mod compatibility | Every player must match the host’s content | Every client must match the server’s supported content; crossplay may rule out unsupported mods or custom worlds |
| Troubleshooting complexity | Usually lower; begin with visibility and friend-search checks | Higher; check branch selection, server configuration, listing status and crossplay limits |
If you only need to determine whether multiplayer works, use an unmodded peer-to-peer Friends Only session. If the world must be available while the original host is offline, use a dedicated server and apply its configuration checks before investigating local Wi-Fi.
Dedicated-server checks for PC-and-console crossplay
For a dedicated server that must accept console players, compare the server configuration with the official crossplay requirements. The following values are the critical ones:
| Setting | Required value for console-compatible crossplay | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
ServerAllowCrossplay |
True |
Allows cross-platform clients to use the server |
EACEnabled |
True |
Crossplay requires EAC |
IgnoreEOSSanctions |
False |
Keeps EOS sanction checks active as required for the crossplay configuration |
ServerMaxPlayerCount |
8 or lower | The documented maximum for console-compatible crossplay is 8 |
Keep all other server settings inside the documented crossplay ranges. A value outside those ranges can make the server unsuitable for console clients even when the four key flags look correct. After editing the configuration, restart the server so the new values are loaded; then have every player search again rather than attempting to join an old listing.
Check the server branch after an update
A dedicated server can be online but still unusable if it is on the wrong release channel. During the 3.1.0 stable rollout in July–September 2026, a Fun Pimps staff notice instructed dedicated-server users to select Default Public Version. If your server was left on another branch, switch it to the required default branch, allow the server files to update, restart it, and verify that clients display the same version.

Do not diagnose a platform incident as a local fault
The same 3.1.0 notice reported Xbox server issues and PlayStation Friends Only/invite problems while the stable build was live on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. If only one platform is affected, or the problem began immediately after a platform update, check the latest Fun Pimps support notice and platform status before deleting saves or repeatedly reinstalling. An incident affecting invitations or server listings cannot be repaired by changing a router setting.
Test the local network in the least disruptive order
Once versions, EAC, content and server settings match, isolate the connection itself. Change one variable at a time so you know which action helped.
1. Replace Wi-Fi with Ethernet for one test
Connect one player, preferably the host, directly to the router with a wired connection. The official network guidance says: “If you are using a wireless connection, try using a wired connection as this is typically more stable.” A Cat6 Ethernet cable is sufficient for this diagnostic. Ethernet does not fix a version, EOS or server-configuration mismatch; it only tells you whether the wireless link is contributing to the failure.
2. Restart the network equipment
- Exit the game and shut down the dedicated server if you are administering one.
- Power off the modem and router.
- Wait for both devices to finish shutting down, then power them back on.
- Wait until the internet connection is fully restored.
- Start the host or server first, then retry the join.
This clears transient router state and gives the server a fresh connection. It will not change a blocked firewall rule or an incompatible game build, so continue to the next checks if the same error returns.

Flush the client’s DNS cache, then retry the server search. If name resolution still appears unreliable, test a supported public DNS service on the affected device or router. Record the original DNS setting before changing it so you can restore it. DNS changes can help a lookup problem, but they do not make a hidden Friends Only session visible when the browser is over-filtered.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
4. Check NAT status
Look at the platform’s network screen and determine whether NAT is open or otherwise permitting peer connections. A restrictive NAT can prevent a peer-to-peer invitation from completing or keep a friend’s session from appearing. If NAT is not open, resolve the router or platform networking issue first, then repeat the same peer-to-peer search. Do not treat an open NAT as proof that the game versions and EOS settings are correct; it only removes one network barrier.
5. Allow the game through Windows Firewall
On Windows, confirm that 7 Days to Die and its relevant network components are allowed through Windows Firewall on the network profile you are using. If you recently changed networks, an entry permitted on a private network may not be permitted on a public profile. Apply the least-permissive rule that still allows the game, restart it, and test again. Security software can also interfere with game files or network components; change exclusions only temporarily and only as described by official support, then restore normal protection after testing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Repair a PC installation without deleting the world first
Use file repair after compatibility and network checks, especially when one PC fails while other players can connect.
Verify the installed files
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Open the platform’s game library and locate 7 Days to Die.
- Run the platform’s file-verification command.
- Allow missing or damaged files to be reacquired.
- Restart the PC and test an unmodded session.
File verification is preferable to immediately deleting saves because it targets the installation while leaving the world available. If verification reports a problem again after a successful repair, note which files are being replaced and check whether security software is quarantining them.
Clean the game data when verification is not enough
The official general troubleshooting guidance also recommends cleaning 7 Days to Die data for persistent PC problems. Back up worlds and configuration files first. Remove only the data the support instructions identify, reinstall or regenerate it as directed, and then launch a plain, unmodded world. A clean-data test can reveal a damaged local configuration or stale mod file; it can also remove local settings, so do not skip the backup.

Test antivirus interference carefully
Official support discusses excluding the Steam folder from antivirus scanning as a troubleshooting step. Use that only as a temporary test, follow your antivirus vendor’s exclusion controls, and restore scanning when the test is complete. Do not download third-party “repair” utilities or treat them as official fixes.
Read the symptom to choose the next branch
The friend cannot see the host at all
- Confirm the host is still playing and the session is Friends Only or Public.
- Open the peer-to-peer tab and search by SteamID or exact name.
- Clear browser filters.
- Compare displayed versions and EAC state.
- If cross-platform, remove mods and custom-world content for the test.
The session appears, but joining fails
- Check for a version or server-branch mismatch.
- On a dedicated crossplay server, verify the four required settings and the eight-player maximum.
- Test the host on Ethernet, restart the router and check NAT.
- Allow the game through Windows Firewall and retry.
- On PC, verify files and then perform the supported clean-data procedure if necessary.
Only console players fail to connect
- Confirm EAC is enabled for every client.
- Check
ServerAllowCrossplay=True. - Check
IgnoreEOSSanctions=False. - Ensure
ServerMaxPlayerCountis no higher than 8. - Review all other settings against the documented crossplay ranges.
- Check current platform and Fun Pimps notices for a console-specific incident.
The problem began after an update
Record the date and affected platform, then check the current support notice before changing saves. During the 3.1.0 period, Xbox server trouble and PlayStation Friends Only/invite trouble were reported even though the stable build was available across PC, PlayStation and Xbox. If the notice describes your symptom, wait for the platform or service fix rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
A compact diagnostic sequence
- Record platforms, versions, host type, crossplay, EAC and the exact error.
- Update clients and dedicated-server software to the same branch.
- Test an unmodded standard world.
- For peer-to-peer, use Friends Only or Public, then search the peer-to-peer tab by SteamID or name with filters cleared.
- For crossplay, enable EAC and remove unsupported mods or custom worlds.
- For a dedicated server, apply the required EOS, EAC, crossplay and player-count values.
- Test one player on Ethernet, restart modem and router, refresh DNS and check NAT.
- Allow the game through Windows Firewall.
- On PC, verify files, back up saves and clean game data only if required.
- Check the latest Fun Pimps and platform status notices if one platform or a recent update is implicated.
What the published guidance does—and does not—establish
The official EOS and network help articles were updated October 1, 2026. They provide compatibility, visibility and network troubleshooting steps, but they do not publish a bandwidth threshold or a guaranteed success rate. No independent performance benchmark establishes a minimum connection speed for joining friends, so avoid promises that a particular speed, router brand or DNS service will solve every case.
Use the least destructive test that answers the current question: a clean peer-to-peer world for compatibility, the peer-to-peer search for visibility, Ethernet for wireless isolation, server settings for console crossplay, and file verification for a single-PC installation fault. This order prevents a temporary platform incident or a simple browser filter from turning into lost saves and unnecessary reinstalls.
