In the legacy Valmod setup documented by its author, a firewall or an unavailable Tinypic image host could break those online links. The safest first repair is to back up your files, replace Windows.xml, controls.xml, and styles.xml with the matching files in Valmod’s OFFLINE FILES folder, then restart the game. That procedure applies to the older Valmod layout; current 7 Days to Die versions use a different XUi structure and renamed files, so check compatibility before copying anything.

What the red question marks mean
In Valmod, a red question mark is generally a missing UI image, not a graphics-quality setting, damaged save, or video-card failure. The symbol appears when an XML interface definition asks the game to draw an icon, texture, or other image and the referenced asset cannot be obtained.

Legacy Valmod could point some interface images to an external host. Valmar, the mod’s author, explained in a Steam support thread that the question marks could be caused by a firewall or by Tinypic servers being down because the mod fetched those images from an online link. The same explanation noted that a future update would move the images to Imgur for better stability. Valmod’s 2016 release notes later described the switch away from Tinypic as a response to hosting problems outside the author’s control.
That history explains why the game can load the rest of the mod while showing question marks only in particular controls. The XML layout is present, but the image endpoint or local asset is not.

Check your Valmod and game version before changing files
The offline replacement is a legacy Valmod fix. It is not a universal recipe for every 7 Days to Die release. Current documentation describes a reorganized interface tree and says that controls.xml was renamed templates.xml in V3.0. A 2016 Valmod package may therefore contain filenames and paths that do not exist in a current installation.
Record the two versions
- Write down the 7 Days to Die branch and build shown by your game launcher or title screen.
- Record the exact Valmod release or archive name. Do not assume that two archives with similar names contain interchangeable XML files.
- Note whether the problem occurs in single-player, on a hosted server, or for every player in multiplayer.
If you cannot identify both versions, pause before copying files. A mismatched XML set can replace valid windows and create errors that are harder to diagnose than the original missing images.
Find the installation folders
The older Valmod instructions use the game directory followed by Data/Config/XUi. Inside that location are the files named Windows.xml, controls.xml, and styles.xml. The Valmod archive should also contain a subfolder named OFFLINE FILES with replacement copies.
On newer builds, look for the split directories XUi_Common, XUi_Menu, and XUi_InGame instead. The presence of those folders is a strong sign that you are looking at the current structure rather than the one used by the old support procedure.
Back up everything you will touch
Do not make the first attempt on an unprotected installation. Close the game and launcher, then copy the entire Valmod folder to a separate backup location. Also copy the current XUi XML files, even if they appear to be the files causing the problem.

- Keep the original directory structure in the backup so files can be restored without guessing where they belong.
- Include any other UI-mod files installed alongside Valmod; a conflict may be involved.
- Do not overwrite the backup during repeated tests. Make a second dated copy if you try a different Valmod release.
A backup lets you restore the previous state by copying the saved files back, rather than relying on a game-file verification step that may remove mod content.

Use Valmod’s OFFLINE FILES on a legacy installation
Use this procedure only when your Valmod package has the legacy XUi folder and an OFFLINE FILES bundle containing the three named XML files. The files must come from the same Valmod release as the rest of your installation.
- Exit 7 Days to Die completely. Leave the launcher closed as well, so it cannot restore or lock the files while you edit them.
- Open the game directory. Navigate to
Data, thenConfig, thenXUi. - Confirm the target files. You should see
Windows.xml,controls.xml, andstyles.xml. If they are absent and you instead see the split modern folders ortemplates.xml, stop and follow the compatibility checks below. - Preserve the originals. Because you already made a full backup, you can move the three files out of
XUior rename them with a suffix such as.original. The documented Valmod procedure deletes them before copying the offline versions; moving them after a backup provides the same clean target while keeping a convenient local rollback. - Open Valmod’s
OFFLINE FILESfolder. Select the matchingWindows.xml,controls.xml, andstyles.xmlfrom that bundle. Do not combine one file from a different archive or release. - Copy all three files into the legacy
XUifolder. Keep the original filenames and capitalization. Do not place them in the Valmod root, a save-game folder, or a newly created directory. - Start the game and load the affected interface. Check the HUD, toolbar, inventory, and menu windows rather than testing only one screen.
- Close and relaunch once more if necessary. A second launch can rule out a stale interface state after the XML replacement.
The offline files remove the dependency on a remote image host. They do not repair a missing local texture, an incompatible game build, or a second UI mod that overwrites the same definitions.
Verify the result instead of checking only the first screen
Inspect every major UI surface
- HUD: Look at status panels, buff or debuff indicators, and custom resource displays.
- Toolbar: Check item slots and any Valmod-specific action icons.
- Inventory and containers: Open both the player inventory and a storage window.
- Menus: Test crafting, character, map, and pause or configuration windows that Valmod changes.
If only one panel still shows question marks, the remaining reference may be a missing image asset rather than one of the three shared XML files. If every custom panel is broken, suspect the wrong path, a version mismatch, or a mod load conflict.
Check the game log for the failure type
After reproducing the problem, inspect the latest log for XUi parsing errors, missing-file messages, or missing texture and icon references. The exact wording varies by game build, but the category is useful:

- An XML parse or unknown-element error points to an incompatible definition or a damaged file.
- A missing texture or image path points to an absent client-side asset.
- Repeated references to an online address support the legacy firewall or unavailable-host explanation.
Save a copy of the log before launching with a different mod set; otherwise a later test can overwrite the evidence from the failing state.
When the offline files are missing or do not work
You have a modern XUi layout
Current 7 Days to Die documentation describes a system assembled from several locations: styles.xml contains visual styles, templates.xml (formerly controls.xml) contains reusable components, windows.xml defines layouts, and xui.xml assembles window groups. The folders are split into XUi_Common, XUi_Menu, and XUi_InGame.
Do not copy a legacy three-file bundle into those folders merely because the filenames look familiar. Find a Valmod release explicitly built for your game branch, or restore the clean UI files supplied with that branch. If Valmod has no compatible release for the build you run, the red marks are a compatibility problem rather than a missing switch in the graphics settings.
The archive has no OFFLINE FILES folder
That usually means the package is not the documented legacy release, the archive was incomplete, or the author distributed a different installation method. Re-download the exact release from the same source you originally used and compare its directory tree with the installation instructions. Do not manufacture replacement XML files by renaming modern files.

Temporarily remove every other UI or HUD modification, keeping only the version-matched Valmod files. Restore a clean copy of the game’s UI files first, then install Valmod alone and test. If the question marks disappear, reintroduce other UI mods one at a time until the conflicting package is identified.

Two mods can both replace shared windows, styles, or reusable controls. The last files loaded may silently win, leaving a layout that references images supplied by the other mod.
The client does not have the image assets
UI definitions and their image files must exist on the player’s machine and follow the game’s expected mod structure. A server can accept a player while that player still lacks the local icons or textures needed to draw the custom interface. Confirm that the complete Valmod asset tree, not just the XML files, is present on every affected client.
Online assets versus offline assets

Switching from online to offline assets removes the host and firewall variables, but it cannot make old XML definitions compatible with a new XUi schema.

The table is a decision aid, not permission to mix rows. A legacy file can have a valid XML extension and still be unusable in a current build.

If you intentionally retain an online-asset Valmod release, test the network cause without weakening your computer’s security permanently. First launch the game with the firewall configuration unchanged and note whether the log records blocked requests. If your security software presents a prompt for the game, allow only the game executable or the specific rule required by your normal policy; do not disable the firewall globally as a routine fix.

An unavailable image host cannot be repaired on your computer. If the same question marks appear for multiple players using the same release, a dead or changed host is more likely than identical local firewall settings. The practical answer is to install the release’s offline bundle or move to a maintained, version-matched package.
Multiplayer: every client needs compatible UI assets
Custom UI images are rendered locally. The server and every player therefore need compatible mod definitions and the required client-side assets for consistent results. One player may see question marks while another sees icons if their Valmod releases, XML files, or asset folders differ.
- Record the exact Valmod archive and game build used by the server operator.
- Distribute the same XML and image files to each client rather than asking players to copy only the three offline XML files.
- After an update, have every player remove stale copies before installing the new bundle.
- Test a fresh client connection after the server’s UI files change.
If only one client is affected, compare that client’s folder tree and log with a working player’s installation. If everyone is affected, inspect the server’s mod version and the online-host status before troubleshooting individual machines.
Rollback and recovery
If the replacement causes a blank menu, new parse errors, missing windows, or a failure to reach the main screen, stop testing additional files. Exit the game and restore the backed-up Valmod folder and XUi files exactly as they were. Then verify the game build and Valmod release before attempting a version-matched installation.
For a clean isolation test, restore the game’s unmodified UI files, launch once, and confirm that the base interface works. Add only the compatible Valmod package afterward. This sequence distinguishes a damaged base installation from a Valmod incompatibility without sacrificing your save.
Prevent the question marks from returning
- Keep a copy of every working Valmod archive alongside a note of the 7 Days to Die build it supports.
- Prefer a release that includes local image assets or an explicitly maintained offline bundle.
- Back up the XUi files before game updates and before installing another HUD or menu mod.
- Do not overwrite a working installation with XML files copied from a tutorial for a different branch.
- When a game update changes the XUi layout or renames a file, wait for a compatible Valmod release instead of forcing the old structure into the new folders.
- For multiplayer, keep the server and all clients on the same mod release and complete asset set.
The reliable decision is straightforward: use the documented offline replacement when you have the old Valmod layout and matching files; otherwise treat the question marks as a version or asset-structure problem, remove conflicting UI mods, and return to clean, version-matched files before reinstalling.
