7 Days to Die is worth considering if you want a long-running survival sandbox built around scavenging, crafting, character progression, and fortifying a base against zombies. It is less suited to players looking for a tightly scripted horror campaign. Its reception also depends on which version you mean: the current PC and current-generation console releases are not the same product as the older PS4 and Xbox One edition.

What kind of game is 7 Days to Die?

7 Days to Die combines first-person combat and survival horror with crafting, role-playing progression, and tower-defense-style base building. You explore a post-apocalyptic world, gather supplies, make equipment, improve your character, and build or reshape structures to prepare for threats. The official PlayStation listing describes that blend as a combination of shooter, survival horror, tower defense, and role-playing games: PlayStation Store.

The appeal is the connected systems: a supply run can feed crafting, crafting can support a stronger defense, and exploration can open up new goals. The game gives players room to set their own priorities rather than leading them through a tightly authored linear horror story. Expect to make your own plans and spend time managing resources and building.

Is 7 Days to Die worth it?

For players who enjoy open-ended survival progression, resource management, exploration, and substantial base construction, the answer is generally yes. The combination of looting, crafting, character growth, and building gives the game a durable sandbox appeal. If you prefer a polished, tightly paced campaign or want horror that is driven mainly by scripted story beats, its player-directed structure may not be a good fit.

7 Days to Die – Console Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Explore – Huge, rich environments, with unique biomes and worlds up to 100 square kilometres in size.
  • Craft – Handcraft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, with hundreds of recipes and schematics.
  • Build – Design your fort with traps, electricity, auto turrets, and gadgets to survive in a fully destructible and mouldable world.
  • Cooperate or Compete – Work together to build settlements or against each other in a wasteland where zombies and outlaws rule the land.
  • Farm or Hunt – Plant gardens for sustainable resources or head out to the wilderness and hunt over a dozen unique animals.

Current storefront ratings are positive overall, but they are player-review signals—not platform-matched critic reviews or guarantees about performance on every system. On October 7, 2026, Steam showed 75% positive from 1,126 reviews posted in the previous 30 days and 85% positive from 124,682 English reviews overall. Steam notes that review periods identified as off-topic are excluded from its score; its live figures can change. See the Steam store page.

On the same date, the US PlayStation Store showed an average of 4.45 out of 5 from 17,325 ratings for the PS5 Console Edition. Sony says its reviews come from verified owners and are moderated under its review policy. This is a rating for that PlayStation listing, not a critic score or a rating for every platform: PlayStation Store.

  • A must-have for collectors and fans of Open-World Survival Horror, the 7 Days to Die – Console Edition Survival Bundle includes the following: An exclusive Artbook with over 100 pages showcasing never-before-seen illustrations of the zombie apocalypse, a CD featuring the haunting Original Soundtrack (OST) of the game, a double-sided poster, Fine art prints x3, Sticker sheets x 3, the physical game, and a collectible tuck-in box housing all the contents.

Why do some 7 Days to Die reviews disagree?

Some of the sharpest criticism readers may encounter applies to the older PS4 release, not the current PS5 edition. Metacritic’s PS4 critic archive lists a 47 Metascore from 17 reviews, categorized as “Generally Unfavorable”; the listed reviews include complaints about the 2016 console port’s interface, presentation, and technical problems. Keep that score attached to the legacy PS4 version rather than treating it as a verdict on the current PC or current-generation console releases: Metacritic’s PS4 page.

Concerns about polish have also appeared in PC criticism of the newer release era. A September 4, 2024 CD-Action review excerpt collected by Metacritic called the game unfinished and criticized bugs and optimization, while also saying the reviewer had played for more than a hundred hours and enjoyed most of that time: Metacritic’s critic reviews. That contrast captures a real trade-off: a compelling, replayable mix of systems can coexist with technical or polish complaints.

The Fun Pimps released version 1.0 on July 25, 2024 for Steam, Windows, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, after a long Early Access period that began on Steam in December 2013. The developer’s launch announcement also said the older Telltale console edition had been delisted from PlayStation and Microsoft stores to reduce confusion, while existing owners could continue playing it: The Fun Pimps’ 1.0 announcement. Historical reviews of the older edition and current reactions to newer releases therefore describe different builds and release contexts.

Which version should you buy?

Version What it means What to keep in mind
PC, PS5, or Xbox Series X/S The current-generation release associated with version 1.0, launched July 25, 2024. Do not use the 2016 PS4 critic score as a direct review of these versions. The sources here do not establish matched current performance tests across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
PS4 or Xbox One legacy edition The older Telltale console release, which was delisted from the PlayStation and Microsoft stores when the newer generation launched. Its reviews and technical criticisms apply to that legacy build. Existing owners could continue playing it after delisting.

Prices and availability vary by region and date. The developer’s US$44.99 price was the announced 2024 launch price, not a current price guarantee. Check your platform’s store listing for the price and edition currently available in your region.

Is 7 Days to Die better on PC or console?

There is no evidence here for a controlled, current comparison that proves one platform performs better. The safest choice is the system you prefer for this kind of survival game, after checking its current store listing and the capabilities of your specific hardware. Older console-port criticism should not be generalized to PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, and PC criticism about bugs or optimization does not establish how every current PC configuration performs.

Steam’s overall and recent user scores and the PS5 Store’s rating are useful signals for those specific listings, but they measure player reception rather than comparable technical performance. They also use different review systems and populations, so they should not be treated as a head-to-head platform test.

Can you play 7 Days to Die with friends?

Yes, the PS5 Console Edition lists online play for up to four players and says PlayStation Plus is required for online play. Its listing also marks online play as optional, so it supports playing without going online. These are the details stated for the PS5 edition; check the relevant store listing for the online setup and requirements on another platform.

Does 7 Days to Die have split-screen?

The PS5 store listing says one player locally and up to four players online. It does not list local split-screen, so do not buy that edition expecting couch co-op. Confirm the feature list for the exact edition and platform you plan to use: PlayStation Store.
