7 Days to Die “Server Closed the Connection” Error: Fixes

The “Server closed the connection” message is only a symptom. Follow a decision path based on whether every server fails, when the disconnect occurs, and what the client and server logs report.

The “Server closed the connection” message is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It appears when the game loses a session during join or play, and the underlying cause can be a mismatched build, different mods, a failed Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) or platform-authentication check, an interrupted world download, or a NAT, firewall, or server-configuration problem.

Use the sequence below in order. First determine whether the problem affects every server or only one. Then match the game build and mods, identify when the disconnect occurs, check authentication and networking, and finally give the server owner enough timestamped evidence to find the event in logs.

Start by identifying the failure pattern

Do not treat the wording of the message as proof of a particular fault. A client log may show DisconnectedFromServer: Server closed the connection. after the server or an intermediate network device ends the session. The timing and scope are more useful than the message itself.

If every server disconnects

Join two or more unrelated public servers. If each one sends you back to the main menu, concentrate on your own installation and connection: game files, EAC, Steam or Epic authentication, firewall rules, Wi-Fi stability, and NAT. A single server’s map, mod pack, or configuration is unlikely to explain a failure everywhere.

If only one server disconnects

If other servers work, the fault is probably specific to that server or to the way your client matches it. Ask the owner to inspect the server log for your join attempt. Common server-side causes are a different game build, a different mod pack, a damaged or oversized world, exhausted memory, or a host networking rule.

Use the timing as a clue

Fixes for an immediate rejection

1. Put the client and server on the same build

Confirm the exact 7 Days to Die build shown by the player and the server owner. A hosting-support guide recommends ruling out a version mismatch first when a join is rejected immediately. A game update, opt-in branch, rollback, or server-side patch can leave the two ends unable to complete the handshake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the game completely on every affected computer.
  2. Have the server owner record the build currently running, including any beta or experimental branch.
  3. Compare that value with the client’s installed branch and build in its game launcher.
  4. Move both sides to the same branch and let the update finish before launching again.
  5. Restart the server and all clients after changing the branch; do not test with a client that still has a pending update.

If the server owner cannot change the build, the practical choices are to install the branch that server uses or join a server on your current branch. Do not assume that a similar-looking version label is close enough; the handshake requires a compatible build.

2. Make the mod installation identical

Every player needs the same mod pack installed, as the 7d2d.net hosting support guide states. “Almost the same” is not sufficient: a missing dependency, an older file, a different build of one mod, or an extra client-only file can cause rejection or a disconnect while assets are loaded.

  1. Ask the owner for the complete mod list and the pack’s version or release date.
  2. Remove or disable unapproved mods on the client rather than leaving old files mixed with the new pack.
  3. Install exactly the server’s files, including dependencies and the same folder structure.
  4. Have every player update at the same time.
  5. Restart the server and every client after any mod change.

For a fast isolation test, the owner can temporarily run an unmodded test instance (with a backup of the live world). If an unmodded client joins that instance, the mismatch is more likely than a general network failure. Restore the intended pack before returning to the live world.

3. Check EAC and platform authentication

A connection can reach the server and still be terminated when EAC or platform authentication fails. Look in the client log for EAC, authentication, ticket, or sign-in errors rather than relying on the generic disconnect text.

  • Sign in to the platform account that owns the game and confirm it is online, not in an offline or suspended state.
  • Exit the game and the launcher, sign in again, then retry.
  • Use the launcher’s integrity or file-verification function so damaged EAC or game files are restored.
  • Allow the game and EAC components through the operating-system firewall when prompted; do not create broad rules for unrelated programs.
  • Restart after repairs so the authentication service starts with a fresh session.

Release notes for Alpha 20 documented an EAC password-entry fix. That is a reminder that an update can change this troubleshooting branch; if authentication errors began immediately after a patch, check the release notes for that build and ensure both client and server were updated consistently.

When the disconnect happens during world download

World transfer is a separate failure mode. A large map, high latency, packet loss, an unstable route, or insufficient memory can prevent the transfer from completing even though a small server list or login request works.

Allow for a transfer timeout or temporary cooldown

Steam Community moderator SylenThunder wrote in 2020: “If you take longer than 15 minutes to download the map, the server will temp-ban you due to packet loss for 15 minutes.” This is a server-specific rule reported at that time, not a universal current limit. If your log or the owner’s log shows that the server imposed a cooldown, wait for it to expire before repeated attempts. Rapid retries can only produce the same rejection and make the timeline harder to read.

Reduce transfer risk

  • Test on a wired connection or a stable, uncrowded Wi-Fi network.
  • Stop large downloads, cloud synchronization, streaming uploads, and VPN or proxy experiments while transferring the world.
  • Try a nearer server or a second network, such as a trusted mobile hotspot, only as a diagnostic comparison.
  • Ask the owner whether the map is unusually large and whether the server is low on RAM.
  • Retry after the server has completed a restart, if the owner reports a stuck or overloaded process.

The same moderator also identified two common contributors: “Your ping to the server is high, or you are a great distance away from it. (Or both)” and “You’re attempting to join a large map server, and you don’t have enough RAM to support it.” These observations come from a 2020 support discussion, so treat them as practical clues rather than fixed technical limits for every current build.

Separate client capacity from route quality

If a smaller-map server works but one large-map server fails at the download stage, compare the map and memory requirements before changing firewall settings. If every server fails at the same point, route quality, packet loss, EAC, or the local installation becomes more likely. The owner can confirm this by checking whether other players complete the same transfer and by reviewing server memory and timeout entries at your attempt time.

Check NAT, firewall, and self-hosted networking

For a self-hosted server, the return path matters as much as the initial connection. A port-forward rule aimed at the wrong machine, a host firewall block, double-NAT, or carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) can allow discovery while preventing a reliable session.

Verify the host and forwarding path

  1. Give the server computer a stable local address through the router’s reservation feature or an equivalent method.
  2. Confirm that the router’s forwarding rule targets that exact local address, not an old address assigned to another device.
  3. Confirm that the server process is listening on the configured game port and that the host operating system allows it through its firewall.
  4. Check whether a second router, mesh gateway, or ISP modem is also performing NAT. If two devices translate addresses, forward through both or place one in the appropriate bridge or access-point mode.
  5. Ask the ISP whether the connection uses CGNAT. If the host has no publicly reachable address, ordinary inbound forwarding may not work; a publicly addressed host or managed server is then required.

Do not copy port numbers from an old forum post. The available evidence does not establish a current official October 2026 port matrix, and exact ports can vary by game version and hosting setup. Use the port shown in the server’s current configuration and documentation, then verify it at the router and firewall.

Use a controlled comparison

Have a player on the same local network test the server, then have a player outside that network test it. A local success with an external failure points toward forwarding, CGNAT, or the host firewall. Failures for both local and external players point more strongly to the server process, version, mods, EAC, or a host resource problem.

Hosted servers: what to ask the provider to check

On a managed host, you normally cannot repair the provider’s firewall or restart the underlying machine yourself. Send a concise support ticket that lets staff find the event quickly. The hosting guide specifically asks for the incident time and player name.

  • The server name and address, plus the region if shown.
  • Your client build and the server build.
  • The complete mod list and each pack or build identifier.
  • Whether other servers accept you.
  • Whether the failure is immediate, during world download, after spawning, or after a period of play.
  • The relevant client-log lines, especially EAC, authentication, timeout, packet-loss, or mod-loading messages.

Ask the provider to correlate those details with the server log, restart history, memory use, world-transfer errors, and any temporary ban or rate-limit entry. A useful request is specific: ask whether the server closed your session, crashed, rejected a build or mod, or stopped receiving packets. “It kicks me” alone does not identify which branch to investigate.

Client-side network and firewall checks

Test the connection without changing many variables

Run the same join attempt after stopping background traffic and, if possible, from a wired connection. Record whether the result changes. If a second network works, the original path may have packet loss, restrictive NAT, or an ISP route problem. If both networks fail on every server, return to EAC, platform sign-in, build, and file integrity checks.

Review local security software

Security suites can block a newly updated executable even when the old version was allowed. Check the operating-system firewall and third-party security software for blocked events involving the game, EAC, or the launcher. Permit only the required, trusted components and keep the rule tied to the correct network profile. Temporarily disabling protection can be a diagnostic step only if your security policy allows it; re-enable it immediately and create a narrow rule instead of leaving protection off.

Interpret VPN and proxy results carefully

A VPN can change the route and apparent region, sometimes avoiding a bad path and sometimes adding latency or triggering authentication scrutiny. Use it only as a comparison. If the VPN changes the outcome, give the server owner both results and the two connection paths; do not assume the VPN is a permanent fix.

Read the logs for the branch that actually failed

Capture the client log immediately after a failed attempt and ask the owner for the matching server-log interval. Search for the first meaningful error before the final “Server closed the connection” line. The final line describes the consequence; earlier entries often identify the trigger.

These support a parity problem. Compare exact builds and packs, remove stale files, and restart all participants after correcting them.

Timeout, packet-loss, or world-transfer lines

These support a route, latency, map-size, memory, or cooldown branch. Note the elapsed transfer time and test a more stable path before repeatedly reconnecting.

Server crash, memory, or restart lines

These require the owner or host to repair the instance. A client cannot correct a server process that is crashing or being restarted during your join.

A complete decision path

  1. Test another public server. Record whether the failure is universal or limited to one server.
  2. Record the timing. Immediate rejection, world download, post-spawn, and mid-session failures lead to different checks.
  3. Match builds. Confirm branch and exact build on client and server.
  4. Match mods. Reinstall the complete pack, including dependencies, then restart everyone.
  5. Inspect EAC and authentication. Reauthenticate, verify files, and check the relevant log lines.
  6. Stabilize world transfer. Reduce background traffic, use a stable connection, consider map size and memory, and honor any documented cooldown.
  7. Check networking ownership. On self-hosting, verify forwarding, firewall, double-NAT, and CGNAT. On hosted servers, open a support ticket.
  8. Escalate with evidence. Send the timestamp, player identity, server, versions, mods, scope, timing, and log excerpt.

Common mistakes that waste time

  • Repeating the same join attempt during a cooldown: wait for the server’s temporary restriction to end.
  • Changing router settings before checking versions and mods: parity problems are faster and safer to rule out first.
  • Assuming the final message is the cause: inspect earlier EAC, authentication, timeout, and mod entries.
  • Comparing only the visible game version: confirm the branch and build on both ends.
  • Leaving old mod files in place: a stale dependency can fail even when the main pack appears correct.
  • Forwarding a port to a changing local address: reserve the host’s address and verify the rule still targets it.
  • Publishing or trusting an unverified port list: use the current server configuration because no current official October 2026 matrix is established here.
  • Sending support an undated screenshot: include the exact incident time and player name so logs can be located.

What to include in a final support report

Use a compact format that separates facts from guesses:

Incident time: 2026-10-15 19:42 UTC
Player: Your in-game name
Server: Name and address
Client build/branch: exact value
Server build/branch: exact value or unknown
Mods: complete pack and versions
Scope: other servers work / all servers fail
Timing: immediate / world download / after spawn / mid-session
Log excerpt: EAC, auth, timeout, mod, or server-close lines

Attach the smallest log excerpt that includes the lead-up to the disconnect and the final close line. Redact account tokens, private IP addresses, and other secrets before posting publicly. The owner can then determine whether the server rejected your build, lost the transfer, ran out of resources, or closed the session because of its own configuration.
