If Overwatch 2 feels laggy on PS5, first work out whether you are seeing network delay or visual stutter. Delayed actions, teleporting, and rubber-banding suggest a connection problem; brief image or frame hitches may have another cause. Check service status, turn on the game’s network statistics, then try the low-risk connection checks below. No single step can fix a problem caused by your Wi-Fi, router, ISP route, PlayStation Network, Blizzard’s service, or the game client.
1. Identify what “lag” looks like
Notice what happens when the problem starts. If your character or opponents jump to different positions, actions register late, or movement snaps backward, the symptom is consistent with network delay or lost data. If the picture alone hitches while actions otherwise respond normally, that may be visual stutter rather than internet lag.
This distinction matters: connection changes may not help a performance issue. Blizzard’s Overwatch network troubleshooting guide explains how to check network behavior, while its Overwatch 2 technical troubleshooting covers broader game issues.
2. Check whether a service is having trouble
Before changing your PS5 settings, check PlayStation Network status. Service availability can change, so a status page is more useful than assuming there is an outage. If other online games or services are also failing, look beyond Overwatch. If only Overwatch is affected, check Blizzard’s support channels and community updates while gathering the in-game network information in the next step.

3. Show Overwatch 2’s network statistics
In Overwatch 2, open Options > Video > Show Network Stats. Watch the figures while the lag is actually happening, including latency and incoming and outgoing packet loss. Blizzard notes that consistent packet loss above zero can indicate trouble getting data to or from the game client.
These indicators help distinguish a network symptom from a visual hitch, but they do not show which part of the connection is responsible. The issue could be on the home network, along the ISP route, or elsewhere between the PS5 and the game. See Blizzard’s explanation of Overwatch network statistics.

4. Restart the PS5 and router
- Restart the PS5, then check whether the symptom continues.
- If it does, turn off the router. For relevant PS5 connection errors, PlayStation recommends waiting at least five minutes before turning the router back on.
- After the router reconnects, launch Overwatch 2 and observe the same symptom and network statistics again.
A restart can clear a temporary connection problem, but it is not a guaranteed latency improvement. PlayStation includes router and connection checks in its PS5 connection-error troubleshooting.
5. Test Ethernet, or improve the PS5’s Wi-Fi connection
If practical, connect the PS5 to the router with an Ethernet cable and see whether the in-game symptom changes. A wired test helps determine whether Wi-Fi is contributing; it does not guarantee lower ping if the problem is elsewhere. PlayStation recommends a wired connection when possible.

If Ethernet is not available, move the PS5 closer to the router and reduce obstacles or likely sources of interference. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide notes that 2.4 GHz is shared by various devices and that interference can reduce speed or range, or interrupt a connection. PlayStation also recommends checking router firmware as part of connection troubleshooting.
6. Review the PS5 connection and system software
- Open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection to review or recreate the console’s connection.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and check for a system update.
- Run the PS5’s built-in Test Internet Connection if you need to check general console connectivity.
A successful PS5 connection test confirms connectivity at the time of the test; it does not establish that the route to Overwatch’s servers is healthy. PlayStation’s connectivity support and NW-114241-3 troubleshooting describe console connection checks.

7. Escalate to the support team that matches the evidence
- Several devices or online games are affected: contact your ISP or, on a managed network, its administrator.
- The problem is limited to Overwatch and its network statistics repeatedly show loss or unusual latency during the symptom: report what you observed to Blizzard Support.
- The PS5 cannot maintain a general network connection: use PlayStation connectivity support.
- The image hitches without clear network symptoms: consult Blizzard’s technical troubleshooting rather than assuming the router is at fault.
When reporting the issue, include whether other games are affected, whether the PS5 was on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and what the Overwatch network indicators showed during the problem. Treat DNS changes, static IP configuration, and port forwarding as advanced, error-specific troubleshooting—not routine fixes for every lag complaint.
