Minecraft’s native PS5 version launched on October 22, 2024. Before then, PS5 owners could play the PS4 version on their console; the 2024 release brought a build made for PS5. Mojang also offered the native version free to people who own Minecraft for PS4, subject to claiming it through the PlayStation Store while signed in on PS5.
When did Minecraft come out on PS5?
Mojang confirmed the release date as October 22, 2024, in its September 19, 2024 announcement. The PS5 edition had previously been available as a preview: Mojang opened that preview on June 20, 2024 to players who owned the PS4 version and played it on PS5, inviting feedback and bug reports ahead of release. The preview announcement appeared in the Minecraft 1.21.1 Bedrock update notes.

Is the Minecraft PS5 version free if you own it on PS4?
Yes. Mojang said existing owners of Minecraft for PS4 could claim the native PS5 version for free from the PlayStation Store on their PS5 while signed in. Check the Store for the entitlement before buying another copy. Mojang’s announcement does not specify separate instructions for disc ownership, so disc owners should check the Store’s eligibility information rather than assume a particular redemption process.
What is different about Minecraft on PS5?
The main change is that this is a native PS5 build rather than the PS4 version running through backward compatibility. Mojang said the PS5 version was optimized for the console and would offer greater render distance while maintaining 4K resolution and 60 fps. Those are capabilities stated by Mojang, not results from an independent performance test; the announcement does not establish specific loading-time, frame-rate, or image-quality improvements in measured play.
