Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo fix Valorant packet loss, first confirm incoming or outgoing loss with VALORANT’s network graphs, restart the modem and router, and test the PC over Ethernet. If loss continues on a wired connection, inspect router and Windows adapter evidence, then escalate persistent loss to the ISP rather than changing random game settings.
Packet loss can resemble high ping, jitter, or low FPS, but the causes and remedies differ. The seven fixes below move from low-risk local checks to evidence-based ISP escalation.

Key takeaways
- VALORANT’s packet-loss graphs can show whether the problem is incoming, outgoing, continuous, bursty, or limited to one match or route.
- Restarting the modem, router, mesh system, and access points is a low-risk first test, but a recurring problem needs further diagnosis.
- Ethernet is the clearest comparison against Wi-Fi; Riot says high-quality wireless and most wired connections should have near-zero packet loss.
- Windows adapter statistics, router logs, and tests to other destinations provide stronger evidence than guessing or changing random game settings.
- Firewall and MTU changes are advanced tests, while persistent loss over Ethernet should be escalated to the ISP.
- Network buffering can smooth short disruptions but cannot repair faulty Wi-Fi, cables, routers, ISP lines, congestion, or routing.
1. Turn on VALORANT’s packet-loss graphs
Start by proving that packet loss is the problem. In VALORANT, open Settings > General > Other, enable the network instability indicators, and turn on the incoming and outgoing packet-loss graphs.

- Incoming loss: packets are failing to reach your PC from the game server.
- Outgoing loss: packets from your PC are failing to reach the game server.
- Continuous loss: the connection is dropping packets steadily.
- Burst loss: short spikes may cause sudden rubber-banding or delayed movement.
- Limited scope: the problem may occur only in VALORANT, on one server route, or at a particular time.
Riot Games says the network-problem indicator is most commonly triggered by “consistent, high rates of packet loss or brief disconnects.” Riot’s VALORANT network-instability guidance also helps distinguish network trouble from high average ping or low client FPS.
Packet loss, ping, jitter, and FPS problems can feel similar but require different fixes. High ping means packets take longer to arrive; jitter means latency varies; low FPS means the computer is rendering frames slowly. The graphs help prevent you from treating the wrong problem.
2. Restart the modem, router, and Wi-Fi equipment
Restart the modem, router, mesh nodes, and access points, then retest VALORANT before changing advanced settings.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This step can clear temporary device state, a stuck connection, or a malfunctioning access point. A restart is a diagnostic step rather than a guaranteed cure. If packet loss returns quickly, the underlying issue may involve Wi-Fi interference, a cable, router hardware, the ISP line, congestion, or the route to the game server.
3. Test VALORANT over Ethernet
Connect the gaming PC directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the same VALORANT test. Ethernet is the most useful local comparison because it removes wireless interference, weak signal, distance, and many Wi-Fi stability problems from the test.

Riot Games states, “High quality wireless and most wired connections should have near-zero packet loss at all times.” Riot’s official network-instability article recommends switching to a wired connection when troubleshooting packet loss.
A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a practical choice for this test or for replacing a suspect local cable. A cable can solve packet loss caused by the wireless link or a damaged Ethernet lead, but a Cat6 cable cannot repair ISP routing, outside-line damage, network congestion, or a problem on Riot’s side.

|---|---|---|
| Loss disappears on Ethernet | Wi-Fi signal, interference, mesh link, or wireless adapter | The wired comparison isolated the wireless path as the main suspect. |
| Loss remains on Ethernet on one PC | PC adapter, cable, firewall, router port, or local software | The problem is no longer explained by Wi-Fi alone. |
| Loss appears on several devices | Router, modem, ISP line, congestion, or upstream route | The issue affects more than one local client. |
| Only VALORANT shows loss | Game-server route or destination-specific path | Other internet tests do not automatically clear the route used by VALORANT. |
4. Inspect the router and compare other destinations
Use your router’s diagnostics, event history, and packet-loss logs if those features are available, then compare VALORANT with other internet destinations.
Run comparisons from the same PC and, where possible, from another device on the same network. Note whether loss occurs at the same time of day and whether multiple devices experience it. Several devices or destinations showing loss point away from a VALORANT-only client issue. One affected PC points toward that PC’s adapter, cable, Wi-Fi connection, or security software.
Traceroute can help show where a route changes or becomes unreliable, but a router that does not answer traceroute packets does not automatically prove that gameplay traffic is being dropped. Treat traceroute as supporting evidence, not a final diagnosis.

5. Check Windows network-adapter statistics
When the PC’s network interface is suspected, inspect the adapter’s counters before and after a controlled change. Microsoft specifically identifies NIC discard counters and Get-NetAdapterStatistics as useful evidence when diagnosing packet loss.
Open PowerShell and run:
Get-NetAdapterStatistics
Review the adapter that is actually carrying the connection and look for discard-related counters. Record the output, test VALORANT again, and compare the results. If the evidence points to the adapter, install the current driver supplied by the PC or adapter manufacturer, or reinstall the adapter driver using Windows’ normal device-management tools. Do not assume that every packet-loss problem is a driver problem.
Microsoft’s Windows packet-loss documentation describes adapter statistics and other diagnostic evidence, including cases where packets are discarded by the local network interface.
6. Review firewall and MTU possibilities carefully
Firewall behavior and oversized packets can cause packet drops in some network conditions, but both areas require controlled testing.
Microsoft notes that firewall behavior can drop packets from remote machines in some situations and that MTU-related errors can occur when packets are too large for part of the path. If you test a firewall exception, limit the change to the legitimate Riot and VALORANT installation and retest immediately. Do not broadly disable Windows or security-software protection.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
MTU changes should be an evidence-led, advanced step rather than a universal gaming tweak. Change one setting at a time, record the original value, and revert the change if the evidence does not improve. An MTU adjustment cannot fix wireless interference, a damaged cable, a congested router, an ISP fault, or every routing problem.
7. Escalate persistent wired loss to your ISP
Contact the ISP when packet loss continues after a modem/router restart and a direct Ethernet test, especially when router logs or multiple devices show the same problem.
Prepare evidence before contacting support:
- VALORANT incoming and outgoing packet-loss graphs.
- Exact timestamps and time-of-day patterns.
- Router or modem event logs.
- Results from Ethernet compared with Wi-Fi.
- Results from other devices or internet destinations.
- Windows adapter output from
Get-NetAdapterStatistics, when relevant.
Riot says that when switching to a wired connection does not help, common causes include physical damage to ISP cables or another issue that the ISP needs to investigate. Riot’s troubleshooting guidance supports escalating persistent wired loss instead of treating the problem as a VALORANT graphics or settings issue.
Which fix fits the evidence?
| Observed symptom | Best next action | Risk and expected effect |
|---|---|---|
| Packet-loss graph has short spikes, but only on Wi-Fi | Restart wireless equipment and test with Ethernet | Low risk; may isolate or solve a local wireless problem. |
| Loss affects one PC while other devices are stable | Check cable, adapter, driver, firewall, and adapter counters | Low to moderate risk; isolates the affected computer. |
| Several devices lose packets | Inspect router/modem logs and test at different times | Low risk; helps separate home-network faults from ISP issues. |
| Loss remains on direct Ethernet | Collect evidence and contact the ISP | Low risk; addresses line, modem, congestion, or upstream faults. |
| Only the VALORANT route appears affected | Document server, timestamp, and graph behavior for support | Low risk; identifies a destination-specific routing problem. |
| Movement looks uneven during brief bursts | Consider network buffering as a mitigation | May smooth visible artifacts but can add some latency and does not repair packet loss. |
Can network buffering stop VALORANT rubber-banding?
Network buffering can reduce visible movement artifacts when incoming packets arrive late, but buffering does not remove the underlying packet loss.

Riot’s gameplay-consistency update also discusses short-term bursts of packet loss and how network buffering recovers from disruptions. The official gameplay-consistency update is useful when the problem is intermittent rather than constant.
What should you avoid changing first?
Do not begin with VPNs, port forwarding, game reinstallation, registry tweaks, or broad firewall changes. Those actions do not establish where packets are being lost and can introduce new variables or security problems.
The most useful sequence is measurement, restart, Ethernet comparison, router and destination checks, Windows adapter evidence, cautious firewall or MTU testing, and ISP escalation. That sequence keeps each change tied to a specific hypothesis.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether VALORANT has packet loss or just high ping?
Packet loss is not the same as high ping, jitter, or low FPS. Packet loss means data fails to arrive; high ping means data is delayed, jitter means delay varies, and low FPS means the PC is rendering frames slowly. VALORANT’s incoming and outgoing packet-loss graphs help separate these problems.
Does Ethernet fix VALORANT packet loss?
Ethernet can fix VALORANT packet loss when Wi-Fi interference, weak signal, distance, a mesh link, or an unstable wireless adapter is responsible. Ethernet cannot fix ISP routing, outside-line damage, congestion, or a problem on Riot’s side.
Should I call my ISP if VALORANT keeps losing packets?
Call the ISP when packet loss continues after restarting the modem and router and testing directly over Ethernet. Provide VALORANT graphs, timestamps, router logs, comparison results from other devices or destinations, and relevant Windows adapter statistics.
Can network buffering stop VALORANT rubber-banding?
Network buffering can smooth visible movement artifacts during short bursts of late or missing packets, but buffering is only a mitigation. Buffering may add some latency and cannot repair a faulty cable, Wi-Fi link, router, ISP line, congestion, or route.
The Bottom Line
To fix VALORANT packet loss, first confirm the symptom with VALORANT’s incoming and outgoing graphs, restart the network equipment, and compare Wi-Fi with direct Ethernet. If loss persists on Ethernet, use router and Windows adapter evidence to isolate the fault and escalate the documented problem to your ISP.
