If you want more freedom to choose where to go, more reasons to wander off the main path, or a world that reacts to how you explore, these seven games are strong alternatives to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. “Better” is a matter of taste: Ocarina’s memorable dungeons and guided adventure are not what every player means by exploration. The picks below focus on different strengths, from open-ended travel to secrets, environmental puzzles, and compact, puzzle-led worlds.
What “better exploration” means here
Ocarina of Time ties exploration closely to a clear adventure, item-gated routes, and dungeons. These games offer different rewards for curiosity: more route choice, environmental experimentation, hidden information, or simply more room to roam. They are a preference-led shortlist, not a universal ranking; several are not Zelda-like in combat, scale, or structure.
Games with more freedom to roam
1. Elden Ring
Choose Elden Ring if you want exploration to feel dangerous and uncertain. Bandai Namco describes it as an open-world, single-player action RPG, with vast maps and dungeons to discover in the Lands Between and the Land of Shadow. It offers broad travel and hidden mysteries, but combat is central and can be demanding; it is a dark-fantasy action RPG, not a dungeon-focused Zelda adventure. Bandai Namco’s game page.
2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
This is the clearest choice if what you want is less prescribed route-finding. Nintendo invites players to explore Hyrule “any way you like”: climb towers and peaks to spot destinations, mark points of interest with the Sheikah Slate, and travel by horse, raft, shield-surfing, or paraglider. It is a Zelda game rather than an alternative to the series, but it belongs here because its player-directed discovery is a substantial change of emphasis from Ocarina’s more structured journey. 3. Genshin Impact
Genshin Impact suits players looking for a broad open-world adventure, with puzzles and secrets that can be approached using character powers. Its feel has been compared with Breath of the Wild, though the character-based abilities and free-to-play structure make it its own kind of experience. It uses gacha mechanics; that does not mean all content is paid, and current monetization details are not established here. GamesRadar+’s games-like-Zelda guide.
Worlds that reward experimentation and inference
4. Eternal Strands
Try Eternal Strands if the pleasure of exploration comes from interacting with the environment. GamesRadar+ highlights wall-climbing and physics interaction reminiscent of Breath of the Wild, alongside magic that affects the world. That makes it a promising action-adventure for experimenting with traversal and surroundings, not evidence that its exploration is objectively superior. GamesRadar+’s games-like-Zelda guide.

5. Tunic
Tunic turns exploration into a process of figuring out what the world is telling you. This isometric, Zelda-inspired adventure hides information in a cryptic instruction manual and rewards players who inspect, connect clues, and search for secrets. Its obscurity is part of the appeal, but can frustrate anyone who wants clear directions. An optional invincibility mode lets players focus on discovery rather than combat. GamesRadar+ lists Nintendo Switch among its platforms. GamesRadar+’s games-like-Zelda guide.
Quieter and more compact exploration
6. Sable
Choose Sable for unhurried roaming and atmosphere rather than battles. GamesRadar+ describes it as an open-world, non-combat adventure with a contemplative pace. That makes it a good fit if you want to wander and take in a setting without combat driving every excursion; it is less suited to players seeking Ocarina-style dungeon challenges. 7. Chicory: A Colorful Tale
Chicory: A Colorful Tale offers a smaller, puzzle-led alternative to a huge open world. This top-down adventure uses paintbrush abilities to explore towns and dungeons and solve puzzles. It is a natural pick for players who want exploration to be about noticing details and using a tool creatively, rather than choosing among distant destinations. GamesRadar+ lists Nintendo Switch among its platforms. GamesRadar+’s games-like-Zelda guide.

| Cryptic secrets and clue-solving | Tunic | Directions and solutions can be deliberately obscure. |
| Quiet, combat-free roaming | Sable | Less emphasis on combat and dungeon challenges. |
| Compact exploration built around puzzles | Chicory: A Colorful Tale | Not a vast open world. |
Platform availability can vary by game and edition; only Nintendo Switch is specifically listed for Tunic and Chicory in the cited GamesRadar+ guide. If none of these fits, Nintendo Life also points to Hyper Light Drifter, Elliot Quest, Ittle Dew 2+, and Crystalis as alternatives. Its guide notes that Elliot Quest can be unclear about direction, while Ittle Dew 2+ channels 2D Zelda exploration. Nintendo Life’s alternatives guide.
