The best Minecraft performance mod depends on what is slowing you down: Sodium targets rendering, Lithium improves game logic and ticking, and FerriteCore reduces memory use. The seven picks below address different bottlenecks; they are not a stack to install all at once, and none guarantees a particular FPS gain. Choose for your Minecraft: Java Edition version, modloader, and symptoms.
Which Minecraft performance mod should you choose?
Start with the symptom, not the longest mod list. FPS describes how quickly frames are rendered; simulation or tick problems concern game logic such as mob AI and block updates. Memory pressure, slow launches, hidden objects being rendered, and resource use while the game is idle are different issues.

Compatibility varies by Minecraft version and loader. Check each project’s current release and compatibility notes before installing. The listings below can change as projects add or drop support.
1. Sodium: a renderer for higher or steadier client FPS
Sodium replaces Minecraft’s rendering engine to improve frame rates and reduce micro-stutter. It is a client-side renderer, so its focus is drawing the world rather than optimizing every part of the game. It is a sensible first choice when rendering is the problem and your loader and game version are supported.

Sodium lists Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt support, and recommends Fabric for a simple, lightweight setup. It officially supports desktop graphics cards with current drivers compatible with OpenGL 4.5 or newer; older or translated OpenGL environments may have problems. Its page describes Android devices using OpenGL translation layers as unsupported. Check the project’s compatibility and installation notes for your exact setup.
Sodium’s reported comparisons reflect a particular integrated-graphics laptop and software stack, not a forecast for every machine. Actual results vary with hardware and software. Add other mods only when they address a separate need.
2. Lithium: game logic and ticking
Lithium optimizes systems including game physics, mob AI, and block ticking while aiming to preserve vanilla mechanics. It is a better match for simulation or tick-time trouble than for a purely GPU-bound rendering problem.

Lithium can run on a client or server independently: a server can use it without requiring players to install it, and a client can use it without requiring the server to do so. Its project describes benefits to server tick times and to the internal server used in single-player.
3. FerriteCore: lower memory use
FerriteCore reduces Minecraft’s memory use. The amount depends on the modpack, so a result from one pack should not be treated as a promise for another.
The project reports one comparison using All Of Fabric 3 version 2.5.9: after generating a fixed-seed world and waiting two minutes, heap use fell from 1,792 MB to 984 MB with FerriteCore. The same setup with Hydrogen used 1,335 MB. This is a single project-reported test; the test year is not stated on the project page. FerriteCore says some changes apply on both client and server and recommends installing it on both sides.

4. ModernFix: broad optimizations, fixes, and launch improvements
ModernFix combines performance tweaks, memory improvements, launch optimizations, bug fixes, and debugging tools. Its project page says it supports most Minecraft versions from 1.16 onward, but compatibility depends on the specific version and configuration. Some features are not enabled by default because of compatibility concerns.
ModernFix reports that most Forge modpacks for Minecraft 1.16–1.19.2 launch roughly twice as fast. That is the project’s scoped claim for those versions and modpacks, not a universal result. For troubleshooting, the project asks users to provide the Minecraft version, loader, ModernFix version, other installed mods, and relevant configuration details. Its guidance for modded setups favors the matching version of Sodium on Fabric or Embeddium on Forge rather than OptiFine. The project is listed on CurseForge as well as Modrinth.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. ImmediatelyFast: faster handling of immediate-mode rendering
ImmediatelyFast batches draw calls and uploads data more efficiently for elements such as entities, block entities, particles, text, the HUD, and maps. The project says improvements are expected when the CPU is a bottleneck, so it is not a guaranteed boost in every scene.

One project test used Minecraft 1.19.3, a Ryzen 5 1600, 32 GB of RAM, and a GTX 1060. In a scene with 1,000 cows on screen and Sodium installed, the project reports entity rendering increasing from 21 to 82 FPS. The test year is not stated on the page, and the deliberately demanding scene is not representative of every world or machine.

Entity Culling uses asynchronous visibility checks to avoid rendering entities and block entities hidden from the player’s view. It runs on the client and does not need server installation; the project says it does not alter server-side mob simulation or farms. The benefit depends on how much of a scene is actually hidden.
Some custom entities or block entities with unusually large render bounds may need whitelisting. The author documents a visual comparison using Minecraft 1.21.5, Fabric, render distance 16, and Sodium, Iris, and ImmediatelyFast. That particular comparison is not a general head-to-head benchmark.

7. Dynamic FPS: reduce use while idle or unfocused
Dynamic FPS is aimed at background resource use rather than raising in-focus rendering performance. It lets players lower the frame rate and adjust volume or notifications while the game is unfocused, idle, invisible, or running on laptop or handheld battery. Its project also describes a fix for unnecessary vanilla background CPU use and stops rendering the world while a resource-loading overlay obscures it.
Should you use Sodium or Embeddium?
Embeddium is an alternative renderer for particular loader and Minecraft-version combinations, not an eighth recommendation and not a mod to stack with Sodium. It is based on an earlier FOSS Sodium codebase and adds compatibility fixes. Its listing covers Forge on older versions, Fabric for 1.20.1–1.20.6, and NeoForge on 1.20.1 and newer; Sodium’s listed loader support and exact version coverage differ.
Choose one renderer based on your loader, Minecraft version, and the project’s current compatibility and dependency notes. Embeddium states that it is not supported by CaffeineMC. Confirm the current listings for Sodium and Embeddium before downloading.
How to install performance mods without creating avoidable conflicts
- Identify your game version and loader. Confirm whether the instance uses Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, or Forge before choosing a mod.
- Check the project’s current release listing. Download from its official Modrinth or CurseForge page and verify that the specific release supports your exact Minecraft version and loader.
- Install the loader, then the mod. Sodium’s notes say to install the loader first and then place the mod in the instance’s
modsfolder. Some third-party launchers can automate loader installation. - Add mods incrementally. Keep track of the game, loader, mod, and configuration versions so you can identify what changed if a crash or rendering issue appears. Avoid treating every recommendation as one required bundle.
- Diagnose rendering errors with drivers and compatibility in mind. Sodium advises current graphics drivers; compare your graphics environment with its OpenGL requirements and compatibility notes.
When assessing a measured result, retain its context: hardware, Minecraft version, loader, scene, other active mods, and test conditions. There is no validated universal FPS statistic or independent comparison of all seven mods in the sources cited here.
