To control camera movement in Roblox, start with the experience’s built-in camera, adjust its zoom and mode, and only use a custom camera script when the standard options cannot create the view you want. Roblox experiences can choose their own camera settings and controls, so a mode or input available in one game may not be available in another. The steps below cover both player-facing options and the basics creators can configure in Roblox Studio.
1. Learn what the default camera already does
Roblox provides a built-in camera with default third-person behavior and an optional first-person mode. As Roblox’s camera guide explains, creators do not need to build a follow camera just to keep the view with a character.
If you are playing, the experience determines which camera behavior and controls are available. If you are creating, begin with the built-in camera and its settings; replace or supplement it only when you need a view the defaults cannot provide.
2. Set a useful zoom range
In Roblox Studio, select StarterPlayer in the Explorer and adjust CameraMinZoomDistance and CameraMaxZoomDistance in Properties. These values set the minimum and maximum camera distance relative to the character. A range gives the player room to zoom; setting the two values equal locks the camera at one distance, according to the Creator Hub camera guide.

Choose a range that suits the game’s needs: a closer view can emphasize character detail, while a wider view can show more of the surrounding space. The settings apply to the experience you configure, not to every Roblox game a player visits.
3. Choose between Classic and Follow
Roblox’s built-in camera modes differ in how they respond to character movement. The camera guide describes the modes as follows:

| Classic | Tracks the character and allows camera rotation or orbit. It does not automatically rotate just because the player walks sideways. | You want to control the view independently while moving. |
| Follow | May rotate slightly to face the character when its movement is not parallel to the camera’s direction. | You want the view to respond more closely to the character’s direction of travel. |
For creators, the camera mode is among the options in StarterPlayer. For players, whether either mode can be selected depends on the experience.
4. Try Orbital or CameraToggle when they fit
Two other built-in options can suit specific play styles. Roblox’s camera documentation and CameraType reference distinguish them this way:

- Orbital lets the camera orbit around the player while keeping a fixed vertical angle. It can help when you want to look around the character without freely changing camera height.
- CameraToggle is described for computers: right-click switches between locked and free camera rotation. Do not assume the same input is available on phones or tablets.
These are not universal controls for every Roblox experience. The experience creator chooses which settings and inputs to expose.
5. Match the camera style to the game
A camera that works for a third-person adventure may not suit a platformer or a game viewed from above. Roblox’s learning materials include tutorials for first-person, side-scrolling, and isometric camera styles, along with instruction on detecting user input.

As a creator, decide what the player needs to see and how they should navigate before changing camera behavior. A side-scrolling view can keep attention on movement across a level; an isometric view can show more of the play space; first-person can place the player directly in the character’s perspective. These are design choices, not automatic settings shared by every experience.

For a custom camera, the client’s CurrentCamera can be set to Scriptable. This stops Roblox’s default camera scripts from updating the camera’s CFrame, transferring responsibility for camera positioning and orientation to your code. The camera guide and Camera API document these camera properties.

Custom camera code belongs in a client-side LocalScript, because each client has its own camera. This minimal example points the camera at a target part once its character has loaded; it is a starting point, not a complete camera system or universal game script:

camera.Focus = CFrame.new(target.Position)Create a part named CameraTarget in Workspace for this example. Adjust the offset to change the camera’s position. Once you choose Scriptable, your code must keep the camera positioned and oriented as the scene changes; the default follow behavior no longer does that work.
7. Aim smoothly and keep the camera focused
CFrame.lookAt positions and orients a camera so it faces a target point. For a camera that follows a moving target, update its CFrame as the target moves rather than setting it only once. Roblox’s Camera API describes per-frame updates and smoothing with CFrame:Lerp or TweenService.
When updating a Scriptable camera, set Focus to the point the camera should prioritize for certain visual updates. For example, after calculating a new camera position and target, update both properties:

camera.Focus = CFrame.new(targetPosition)For a continuously moving camera, Roblox documents render-step updates as an option. Use a render-step update when the camera needs to stay synchronized with each frame; use a tween when you want a transition between defined camera positions. Check the current Camera API for implementation details, since Studio APIs and behavior can change.
