Nintendo Switch 2 is a more capable successor, but whether it is worth buying depends on your game library, the accessories you already own, and how you plan to use it. Before you upgrade or choose a bundle, check these seven points: U.S. pricing, game compatibility, battery life, storage format, online requirements, digital sharing, and what carries over from the original Switch.
1. Compare the price with what the bundle actually includes
Nintendo announced U.S. launch suggested retail prices of $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for the Mario Kart World bundle in April 2025. The Nintendo Store listing accessed October 7, 2026 showed the bundle at $549.99. These are official prices from different dates, not a guarantee of what a retailer charges now; check current availability and contents before comparing. Nintendo’s U.S. store listing

A bundle is only a better fit if you want the included game and its total price compares favorably with buying the console and game separately at the prices available to you. Do not treat the older launch price as a current offer.
2. Check your games one by one before upgrading
Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may not work or may not be fully compatible. Compatibility is not a blanket promise for every game. Use Nintendo’s game compatibility information to check the titles you actually play.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Some games receive free updates, while selected titles have paid upgrade packs. Those are separate from basic compatibility: check whether a game works on Switch 2, what any update changes, and whether an upgrade pack costs extra before counting it as a reason to switch.
3. Treat the battery figure as an estimate
Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours of handheld battery life, depending on the game. This is a manufacturer estimate, not independent test data or a guaranteed runtime for every session. If long stretches away from a charger matter to you, weigh that range against the games you expect to play and your usual access to power. Nintendo Switch 2 technical specifications
4. Buy the right storage card format
Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage, some of which is reserved for system use. For game-storage expansion, it supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB. A conventional microSD card does not expand Switch 2 game storage; it is limited to viewing or copying screenshots and videos from the original Nintendo Switch. If you download games and expect to need more space, confirm the card is explicitly labeled microSD Express before buying. Nintendo’s store lists a Samsung 256GB microSD Express card for the console; check current compatibility and availability before purchase. Nintendo Store: Samsung 256GB microSD Express card
5. Factor online requirements into GameChat and other features
Online features, including GameChat, require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo’s stated open-access period for GameChat ended March 31, 2026, so a membership is now required under the published terms. Requirements and availability can vary by country; consult Nintendo’s online-services information for the terms that apply to your region.
6. Understand the limits of digital sharing
Nintendo’s virtual game card system supports use across two paired systems and lending to family-group members. GameShare is different: it works only with compatible games, the Switch 2 must initiate the sharing session, and recipients can play the shared software only during the GameChat session in which it was shared. Check Nintendo’s virtual game card and sharing details if sharing access is part of your buying decision.

7. Audit old accessories before assuming they will carry over
Some original Switch equipment does not transfer to Switch 2 in the way owners may expect. Original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly, but cannot attach to the new system. Original docks and conventional microSD cards are not compatible for their usual Switch 2 purposes. Consult Nintendo’s accessory compatibility list for individual products.
The Switch 2 camera is sold separately. Some compatible USB cameras may work, but Nintendo warns that certain models may be unsupported or unstable. If video chat matters to you, check the camera’s compatibility and current listing rather than assuming an existing USB camera will work. Nintendo Switch 2 accessories
Is the Nintendo Switch 2 worth buying?
It is a more straightforward upgrade if you want to play compatible Switch games on the newer system, are interested in its newer games or upgrades, and are comfortable with the cost of any storage or accessories you need to replace. It is less compelling as an automatic upgrade if your current library and accessories meet your needs and you do not value the new system’s games or features. Make the decision using the titles you actually play, the exact bundle on offer, and the accessories you will need—not the assumption that every old game and accessory works unchanged.
