You can instead search dungeon, desert-pyramid, shipwreck, and woodland-mansion chests. The best route depends on whether you are ready to fight, explore structures, or wait for a chance-based offer.

Minecraft’s official item guide identifies creepers, ghasts, and witches as mob sources and names dungeons, desert temples, shipwrecks, and woodland mansions as places to find gunpowder. The detailed chest odds below come from the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki and can vary with game version.

1. Kill creepers
Creepers are the most straightforward mob source: they drop up to two piles of gunpowder when killed, according to Minecraft’s official item guide. The Minecraft Wiki gives the base drop as 0–2, with Looting increasing the maximum by one per level, up to five. That Looting detail is secondary-source information.
Keep enough distance to avoid an explosion, and use a weapon or terrain to control the encounter. A creeper farm can make this route repeatable, but no current farm design or yield rate is established here.

2. Kill ghasts
Ghasts can drop up to two piles of gunpowder, according to the official item guide. They are found in the Nether’s basalt deltas, Nether wastes, and soul sand valleys. Minecraft’s ghast guide describes their fireball attacks, so this option involves both Nether travel and ranged combat.
3. Kill witches
Minecraft’s official item guide says witches drop up to six pieces of gunpowder. The Minecraft Wiki gives a base range of 0–6 and says Looting can raise the maximum to 15; that expanded maximum is secondary-source detail. Witches are another combat option, but the sources cited here do not establish a particular location or encounter rate.

4. Loot monster-room (dungeon) chests
Minecraft calls this structure a dungeon in its official guide; the Minecraft Wiki uses the term monster room. Its Java and Bedrock loot tables list 1–8 gunpowder with a 57.8% chance per chest. These are community-wiki figures and are version-sensitive, not an official guarantee for every world or release.
5. Search desert pyramids
Minecraft’s official guide calls them desert temples; the Minecraft Wiki’s loot tables label the structure desert pyramid. Those tables report 1–8 gunpowder at a 59% chance in both Java and Bedrock. Treat the odds as version-sensitive community-wiki data.

6. Search shipwreck supply chests
Shipwrecks are listed as a source in Minecraft’s official guide. The Minecraft Wiki specifies supply chests, with 1–5 gunpowder at a 20.8% chance in its Java and Bedrock tables. The figure is secondary-source loot-table data and may change between versions.
7. Search woodland mansions
The Minecraft Wiki lists 1–8 gunpowder at a 57.8% chance in woodland-mansion chests in both its Java and Bedrock tables. Minecraft’s official item guide also names woodland mansions as a source. As with the other chest figures, the probability is community-wiki data, not an official, version-independent rate.

Other possibilities and version caveats
Suspicious sand
The Minecraft Wiki reports one gunpowder at a 12.5% chance from suspicious sand. This is a secondary-source figure; the official item guide does not list suspicious sand among its named sources.
Wandering trader
The Minecraft Wiki lists a chance-based wandering-trader offer for emeralds. The exact quantity and edition were not established in the cited information, so check the current in-game trade rather than relying on a specific offer.

Abandoned Camp snapshot change
Java Edition 26.3 Snapshot 7 notes a change to Abandoned Camp chest loot that replaced firework rockets with gunpowder. A snapshot is a test build, not proof that the change reached stable Java or Bedrock, so this route is not included among the seven established methods above.
What gunpowder is useful for
Minecraft’s official item guide lists gunpowder as an ingredient for TNT, fire charges, firework rockets and stars, and splash potions. Adding more gunpowder to a firework rocket increases its flight height before it explodes. The guide’s use cases are documented in its gunpowder article.
