These seven picks use the 2024–25 season as historical context: their divisions and real-world results have changed since the game’s release, and the choices are based on the kind of challenge each club suggests—not an official ranking or a claim about in-game difficulty.
How to choose an EFL club in FC 25
Manager Career lets you manage a club’s squad, tactics, transfers, finances and player development. That makes your starting point part of the story: you might aim for an immediate promotion, preserve a newly promoted club’s place, or build a longer climb from League Two. EA confirms the game includes all 72 EFL member clubs across the three divisions; see its league and club information and Manager Career overview.

The results below refer specifically to the completed 2024–25 English league season, as recorded in RSSSF’s 2024–25 tables. They provide a narrative for a save, not a forecast of what will happen in your game.
Seven EFL teams worth managing
1. Birmingham City: extend the recovery
Birmingham dropped from the Championship into League One before 2024–25, then won the division with 111 points, according to RSSSF’s 2024–25 table. That makes them a natural choice if you want to take a dramatic recovery and turn it into a sustained climb. Your save can move beyond the immediate return toward the Championship and focus on establishing the club higher up the pyramid.

2. Wrexham: keep the rise going
Wrexham finished second in League One in 2024–25 and were promoted. They suit a save built around continuing a rapid ascent through the English leagues: the next challenge is to turn promotion into progress at a higher level. The real result is context for the premise, not a prediction about your career.
3. Charlton Athletic: chase promotion through a campaign
Charlton ended 2024–25 fourth in League One and won the play-off final. That gives the save a clear season-shaped story: a promotion push that reaches its climax in the play-offs. Choose Charlton if you want a League One starting point with a specific recent route upward to build on.
Rank #2
4. Bradford City: climb from League Two
Bradford placed third in League Two in 2024–25 and earned promotion. Starting in the bottom EFL division gives this save a different scale from Birmingham’s League One rebuild or Wrexham’s continued rise. The central premise is a longer climb, beginning farther down the pyramid.
5. Derby County: make survival the first objective
Derby returned to the Championship for 2024–25 and finished 19th. That season’s position makes a survival-first save a fitting choice, with consolidation ahead of any longer-term push. It is a stabilization project rather than an immediate promotion story.

6. Portsmouth: consolidate after promotion
Portsmouth won League One in 2023–24, then finished 16th in the Championship in 2024–25. Their recent path sets up a save about turning promotion into stability at the next level. It is a useful middle ground between a lower-tier climb and a campaign that starts with a survival concern.
7. Wigan Athletic: build upward from mid-table
Wigan finished 15th in League One in 2024–25. If you want to start outside the bottom EFL tier without taking a promotion winner or a newly promoted Championship side, that mid-table position offers room to set your own pace. You can make progress the objective without treating an immediate promotion as the only successful outcome.
