This list compares their survival pressure, crafting, viewpoint, and multiplayer options—and flags Terraria as a survival-adjacent sandbox rather than a strict survival game.
How to choose a pixel-art survival game
Start with the pressure you want. Some games make hunger, death, or environmental danger the center of play; others are closer to open-ended adventures where crafting, combat, and exploration matter more than strict survival needs. The games below also differ in viewpoint and multiplayer: check the linked official or store pages for current platform availability in your region.

1. Core Keeper: best for underground exploration and co-op crafting
Core Keeper’s Steam listing describes a cavern-focused game built around exploring, mining, building, crafting, fighting, and farming. Its listed tags include Open World Survival Exploration, Pixel Graphics, Multiplayer, Sandbox, Crafting, Building, and Co-op. The top-down underground setting gives resource gathering and base-building a shared, exploratory feel rather than making wilderness simulation the only draw.
Pick it if your ideal session is discovering more of an underground world with friends, bringing resources back, and improving a base. It also supports solo play; the listing’s multiplayer and co-op tags make it a particularly clear fit for players seeking a shared crafting adventure.

2. Starbound: best for a spacefaring sandbox with adjustable survival pressure
Starbound’s Steam page distinguishes three modes. Casual mode does not require eating; Survival mode requires food and makes players drop items on death; Hardcore adds permadeath. That choice makes it suitable both for players who want a survival penalty and those who would rather focus on exploration. The official Starbound site says the game was built for multiplayer and modding.
Choose Survival if food and death penalties are part of the appeal, or Casual if you want a less demanding sandbox. Hardcore is the highest-stakes option because death is permanent.

Klei describes Don’t Starve as “an uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic.” Its official game page presents it as a wilderness-focused survival experience, making it the clearest choice here if you want the environment and staying alive to dominate the run rather than settlement management or a broad co-op sandbox.
The publisher page lists PC and several console and mobile storefronts. Availability can differ by region and storefront, so check the linked page and your local store before buying.

Fair Games’ Necesse presskit describes a top-down sandbox action-adventure in a procedurally generated world. Its activities include fighting, mining, exploring, crafting, and trading; listed features also include farming, fishing, settlement defense, and solo or multiplayer play. That mix makes it a good match for players who want to develop a settlement alongside their own gear and exploration.

The Indie Stone’s official game page describes Project Zomboid as a zombie survival RPG. Its feature list includes scavenging, crafting items, constructing buildings and defenses, exploration, learning skills, multiplayer, and Lua modding. This makes it the strongest fit on this list for players seeking a systems-heavy survival simulation rather than a lighter crafting adventure.
The developer’s Build 42.20 overview says crafting and building are being expanded. Build details and development status can change, so consult the developer’s current announcements for the release branch you intend to play.

6. The Survivalists: best for a lighter cooperative survival sandbox
The Survivalists’ Steam page centers on exploring, building, crafting, and training monkeys, and says you can play with up to three friends. Steam also lists Pixel Graphics, 2D, Survival, and Online Co-op tags. Its appeal is a cooperative island adventure and playful companion mechanic, rather than the uncompromising pressure of a wilderness or zombie-survival simulation.
Choose it if you want the familiar gather-and-build loop with friends and prefer a lighter adventure framing.
7. Terraria: best for crafting, combat, and exploration—not strict survival
Re-Logic’s Terraria About page highlights a robust crafting system and combat options. It supports recommending the game to players who want a 2D world of crafting, fighting, and exploration, but the cited page does not establish strict survival mechanics such as hunger and shelter management. Treat Terraria as a survival-adjacent sandbox, not a direct substitute if those mechanics are essential.
What about Crashlands?
Crashlands is not included as an eighth recommendation because the available evidence does not establish its current mechanics, pixel-art classification, platforms, or fit with this list well enough to describe it confidently. For a dependable shortlist, the seven games above have stronger support for their listed features. Check a publisher source before choosing Crashlands specifically.
