If Blair Witch closes before the menu, crashes after “Press any key,” or never opens, there is no one fix that works for every PC. Start with the low-risk checks below, then try the game-specific workarounds only if they fit your symptom. These steps focus on Windows PC editions; launcher menus and file locations differ between Steam, Epic, GOG, and Microsoft Store versions.
Before changing anything, note when the crash happens and copy any error message exactly. Change one thing at a time and test the game after each fix so you can identify what helped and undo changes that did not.
Identify the failure and check your PC first
“Crashing on startup” can mean several different things. The symptom is a useful clue, not a diagnosis:

Steam lists these requirements for the game. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee that it will start reliably on a particular system; Valve cautions that systems close to minimum specifications can still have launch or performance problems.

These are the requirements on the Steam store page. The Windows 7 minimum is historical: Steam’s client requirement is Windows 10 or later, so Windows 10 or 11 is the practical baseline for Steam users. The store listing recommends Windows 10; it does not establish official Windows 11 support.
Also note which edition you use. Steam, Epic, and GOG have different repair controls. Do not apply Steam file paths or instructions to Microsoft Store or Game Pass installations: use the Xbox app’s repair or reset options rather than editing protected installation folders.
Try these eight fixes in order
1. Verify the game files
Risk: low. A damaged, incomplete, or altered file can stop the game from opening. Use the repair function in the launcher where you installed the game; menu names can change.
- Steam: Open Library, right-click Blair Witch, choose Properties, then Installed Files and Verify integrity of game files. Wait for the scan to finish.
- Epic Games Store: Open Library, select the three-dot menu beside the game, choose Manage, then Verify.
- GOG: Use the launcher’s verification or repair function, or the game’s installation-management tools in GOG Galaxy.
Steam may redownload or replace files. A completed verification means the launcher found no repairable discrepancy; it does not rule out every cause of a crash. Valve’s general launch guidance also recommends file verification: Steam Support: Games that crash or fail to launch.

2. Update Windows and the graphics driver
Risk: low. Valve lists Windows and driver updates as first-line steps for launch crashes.
- Run Windows Update and restart the PC.
- Install a driver for your exact graphics hardware from its manufacturer: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Restart again, then test Blair Witch before turning optional overlays or tuning tools back on.
On a laptop, prefer the manufacturer’s validated graphics driver if a generic driver causes instability. Intel warns that generic graphics drivers can replace OEM-customized drivers and advises returning to the laptop manufacturer’s driver when appropriate.
3. Repair or install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables
Risk: low. A game or supporting component may fail if its required Visual C++ runtime is missing or damaged. Download packages only from Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- On a typical 64-bit Windows gaming PC, download both
vc_redist.x64.exeandvc_redist.x86.exe. - Run each installer. Choose Repair if offered; otherwise install the package.
- Restart Windows and try the game again.
The game is 64-bit, but a supporting component may need 32-bit libraries. Microsoft provides separate x86, x64, and ARM64 packages; the package architecture must match the application that needs it. Do not fetch individual DLLs from third-party download or “DLL fixer” sites.

4. Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX components
Risk: low. The game lists DirectX 11, but the DirectX version built into Windows is not the same as every older side-by-side library a game might need. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer supplies legacy components used by some games, including D3DX, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, and XACT. Microsoft says it does not replace the DirectX version built into Windows.
- Download
dxwebsetup.exefrom Microsoft’s page and run it. - Allow it to install missing legacy components, then restart the PC.
- Test the game again.
5. Reset the local configuration folder
Risk: moderate; back up first. Players have reported that renaming %LOCALAPPDATA%BlairWitch helped when a local configuration problem prevented startup. This is a community-reported workaround, not an official guarantee. See the Steam community report.
- Close the game and Steam.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%LOCALAPPDATA%, and press Enter. - Find the
BlairWitchfolder and rename it toBlairWitch-backup. - Launch the game so it can create fresh settings.
Renaming preserves a recovery copy and may reset graphics settings or other local configuration. Do not delete save files unless you have confirmed their location and made a backup. Steam lists Steam Cloud support for the game, but synchronization may restore or overwrite files; review Steam Cloud behavior and back up saves before further changes if the problem returns.
6. Disable overlays and non-essential background utilities
Risk: low. Valve recommends disabling non-essential software when a game crashes immediately after launch. Test with relevant software temporarily turned off:

- Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, and Xbox Game Bar.
- MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, frame-rate counters, capture tools, or reshading utilities.
- RGB, motherboard monitoring, and other hardware-tuning utilities.
To disable Steam’s overlay, right-click Blair Witch in Library, choose Properties, open General, and turn off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If its security features might be blocking the game, follow the vendor’s documented process for a temporary test or a game-folder exclusion, then restore normal protection.
7. Test the alternate executable or compatibility settings
Risk: moderate. A Steam community report mentions an alternate executable at Blair WitchBinariesWin64Blairwitch-Win64-Shipping-Win7.exe. It is a player-reported workaround, not an officially documented universal fix.
- In Steam, right-click the game and choose Properties → Installed Files → Browse.
- Open
BinariesWin64and check whether the alternate executable is present. - Double-click it once to test. If it starts, confirm it is part of your installed game before making a shortcut or other lasting change.
If the normal executable still fails, compatibility mode is another fallback to test—not a default fix. Right-click the executable, choose Properties → Compatibility, and test Windows 7 compatibility mode. Change one setting at a time; do not combine compatibility mode, administrator mode, and multiple overlays as an initial experiment. Running as administrator can mask a permissions issue and may create inconsistent save or configuration permissions if used unnecessarily.

8. Consider the OpenSSL environment-variable workaround only for a matching failure
Risk: advanced. A community post reports that the following command resolved startup trouble on some newer systems: Steam community report of the workaround.
setx OPENSSL_ia32cap ~0x20000000This is not an official Bloober Team or Microsoft fix. It persistently changes a user environment variable and may affect other applications that use OpenSSL. Do not try it merely because the game crashes. It is most relevant when a failure appears tied to a newer Intel processor or library initialization, after the ordinary file and dependency repairs have failed. The community report does not establish that it works for AMD systems or all Intel generations.
- Before changing the variable, create a restore point or document the original environment.
- Open Command Prompt as the affected user and run the command exactly as shown.
- Sign out or restart Windows, then test the game.
- To undo it later, open Windows’ Environment Variables interface and remove
OPENSSL_ia32cap, or runsetx OPENSSL_ia32cap "".
Match the next step to the error
Missing DLL or runtime message
Use the official Visual C++ and legacy DirectX installers above rather than downloading the named DLL by itself. If the error persists, record its exact text and the DLL name; that information helps support identify which dependency is involved.
Unreal Engine fatal error
Write down the full LowLevelFatalError message, including any file name and line number. The message alone does not establish that one particular fix applies. If it names a library or initialization failure and you use a newer Intel CPU, the advanced workaround above may be worth considering after safer repairs.

Crash after the title screen or “Press any key”
Back up the local data before renaming %LOCALAPPDATA%BlairWitch. If the game then starts, the old per-user configuration may have been involved. Reinstalling alone may leave this folder untouched.
Date-related fatal error
A developer-marked Steam discussion records a boot failure on February 29, 2020 caused by a leap-year date bug, with a fix intended at the time. That is a historical, date-specific case, not evidence of a general current startup problem. If you see a date-related error, record the system date and exact text. If the game still will not launch
- If it works after overlays and background utilities are disabled, re-enable them one at a time to identify the conflict.
- Test from a fresh Windows user account. If the game works there, per-user configuration or permissions may be involved.
- If other games also crash, investigate Windows, graphics hardware, memory, overheating, or system stability rather than treating this as a Blair Witch-only problem.
- If only Blair Witch fails, gather the launcher and edition, Windows version, CPU and GPU models, exact error text, crash timing, a
dxdiagreport, and the steps already tried.
For Steam, the game’s technical issue page lists its support route. For Epic users, Epic directs players to Bloober Team at the Blair Witch support page; the listed support email is [email protected]. Include the information above so the support team can distinguish a game-specific failure from a Windows or hardware issue.
