If Growtopia freezes before login, troubleshoot the client and launcher; if it times out or will not load a world, check service status and your network; if you can play but cannot join someone, test another world and connection before changing account settings. Growtopia is online multiplayer, not local split-screen co-op, and its Steam version requires a Ubisoft Account.
Start with the checks below that match your symptom. Avoid unlinking accounts or deleting local profile data while troubleshooting: those steps can put access to progress at risk.
Identify the failure before changing settings

Change one variable at a time when possible. That makes tests—such as switching networks or disabling an overlay—more informative than changing several settings at once.
Check whether Growtopia is experiencing an outage
Do this before editing firewall or router settings. Ubisoft recommends checking the Growtopia website and official social channels for maintenance, degradation, or outages in its connectivity troubleshooting guidance. That guidance does not establish whether the servers are down at this moment, so look for a current official announcement rather than assuming an outage.

- Can the PC reach other websites and online games?
- Does Growtopia fail on both PC and mobile, if you have access to both?
- Does it fail on home Wi-Fi and a phone hotspot?
- Are other players reporting the same problem?
- Does the problem start before login, after login, or only when entering a particular world?
If the same failure affects multiple devices and networks, a service or account problem is more plausible than a PC setting. If it affects only one PC, focus on the client, launcher, graphics driver, firewall, or Windows configuration. If a hotspot works while home broadband does not, investigate the home router, ISP, DNS, NAT, or filtering. Failure limited to one world is not good evidence of a general PC performance problem.
Try safe, reversible first steps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Select Growtopia and choose End task if it is still running.
- Exit Steam and Ubisoft Connect fully, including from their system-tray icons. Reopen the launcher and try again.
- Restart Windows.
- For a test launch, close overlays and monitoring or recording tools: Discord overlay, Steam overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD recording overlays, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner-type tools, screen recorders, and similar utilities.
- If you temporarily pause third-party security software to test, restore it immediately afterward. If that test changes the result, create a narrow application exception instead of leaving protection disabled.
Fix freezing or launch crashes
Check Windows and graphics compatibility
The Steam listing, checked August 18, 2026, specifies Windows 10 64-bit and the following PC requirements. They are the requirements displayed on Steam, not a guarantee that every Windows configuration will work.

These figures come from the Growtopia Steam listing. It explicitly names Windows 10 64-bit; Windows 11 users should keep Windows and graphics drivers current, but this listing alone does not guarantee compatibility with every Windows 11 setup. Meeting minimum requirements also does not rule out driver conflicts, overlays, damaged game files, or network trouble.
Update and isolate graphics-related causes
- Install available Windows updates, then restart.
- Update the graphics driver through Intel, AMD, or Nvidia, as appropriate, and restart after installation.
- Launch once with overlays and monitoring tools closed.
- If freezing began immediately after a driver update, consider rolling back that driver only if the rollback option is available and the timing clearly points to the update.
Do not install registry cleaners or generic driver-updater utilities. Reinstalling DirectX or Visual C++ components is not an established general Growtopia fix; consider a runtime only when an error specifically names a missing component.

Repair the installation or launcher
On Steam, use the game’s Properties page and the installed-files verification option, then restart Steam. If you use Ubisoft Connect, use its installed-game repair or verification option if it is available in your current version; launcher labels can change.
If Ubisoft Connect itself is malfunctioning, Ubisoft’s Growtopia download instructions say to download the latest Ubisoft Connect PC installer, run it with administrator rights, select Growtopia from the Free Games tab, and install it. Repair or reinstall the client only after confirming you know which account holds your progress.
Fix connection errors, timeouts, and endless loading
Test the network before changing router settings
Ubisoft recommends resetting network hardware and trying a wired connection. Exit Growtopia, power off the modem/router for about 30–60 seconds, turn it back on, and wait for internet access to return. Then test with Ethernet if available and briefly compare with a phone hotspot.
- Ethernet works, Wi-Fi does not: investigate wireless instability, interference, or router settings.
- Hotspot works, home broadband does not: the home router, ISP, DNS, NAT, or filtering becomes more likely.
- Neither network works on this PC, but another device does: focus on the PC client, firewall, launcher, or Windows settings.
- Only one account cannot log in: investigate authentication and account access before resetting network hardware again.
Allow the game and launchers through the firewall
Allow Growtopia, Ubisoft Connect, and Steam through Windows Firewall for the network profile you are using. If you need to test third-party security software, pause it only briefly and turn it back on immediately. A change during that test suggests filtering may be involved; it does not prove the game is broken. Prefer a specific application exception over leaving a firewall or antivirus disabled.

Flush the Windows DNS cache
Ubisoft includes flushing DNS in its connectivity steps. In Windows, the diagnostic command is ipconfig /flushdns; it clears the local DNS resolver cache, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter
ipconfig /flushdnsand press Enter. - Look for “Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache,” then restart Growtopia and test.
Inspect the hosts file cautiously
A modified hosts file can redirect or block service domains. Ubisoft lists resetting it as a connectivity step, but the support page does not give a full Windows-specific procedure. Its normal location is C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts. Do not delete the file. Back it up before making any change, and remove only entries you can identify as unwanted Growtopia- or Ubisoft-related redirects. If it contains custom work or network entries you do not understand, ask an administrator rather than editing it.
Use UPnP or port forwarding only for a likely router/NAT problem
Ubisoft’s Growtopia connectivity page lists TCP port 80 and UDP ports 16999–17200, and recommends enabling UPnP or forwarding the ports if needed. These are conditional network steps—not requirements for every player and not a fix for a service outage, account problem, or damaged client.
- UPnP is simpler, but lets compatible applications request router port mappings.
- Manual forwarding is more controlled but depends on router-specific instructions and a stable local IP address for the PC.
- Do not expose unrelated ports. Port forwarding may not work on carrier-grade NAT, public Wi-Fi, shared apartment internet, or networks you do not administer.
- On school, workplace, hotel, apartment, or cellular networks, you may not have permission or access to change router settings.
Resolve Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and login handoff problems
Steam describes Growtopia as an MMO with online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer, and its listing requires a Ubisoft Account. Ubisoft’s Steam setup instructions describe an initial flow in which Steam starts the game, Ubisoft Connect opens or installs, and the game is bound to a Ubisoft account.

- Sign in to Steam and start Growtopia.
- Accept the EULA if prompted and allow Ubisoft Connect to open or install.
- Continue through the account-binding prompt using the Ubisoft account you intend to keep associated with your progress.
- Select Play Online and then Connect, if those prompts appear.
If the handoff stalls, fully close both launchers, sign out of Ubisoft Connect, restart it, and sign back in before testing again. You can compare launching through Steam with launching through Ubisoft Connect, but do not repeatedly unlink or relink accounts to experiment. The exact launcher behavior and menu labels may vary by installation.
Enable two-step verification if prompted
Ubisoft documents two-step verification for cases where Growtopia or Ubisoft Connect says it is required; that does not establish that every current PC login route requires it. In Ubisoft Connect, click your username, open Account Information, and choose Manage under 2-step Verification. Follow the setup prompts; labels may differ slightly in the current launcher. Growtopia’s Steam listing identifies online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer; it does not mean local split-screen play. To isolate a join failure, test a different world and a different player before treating it as a general PC problem.
- Ask whether the other player can join anyone else, and whether your account can enter other worlds.
- Check whether the failure affects one world or all worlds. A single-world failure may be world-specific, access-related, or server-side.
- Compare your home network with Ethernet or a hotspot. A restrictive NAT, VPN, school/work network, or cellular carrier network can affect connections.
- Notice whether the problem follows your account to another device or follows your PC across networks.
A VPN is not a default fix: it may change routing or public-IP behavior, but can add latency, create NAT complications, trigger security checks, or conflict with network policy. First use the network comparisons above.

Protect progress before reinstalling or contacting support
Reinstalling a client is different from unlinking an account or deleting profile data. Before reinstalling, confirm whether the desired progress is associated with a GrowID, Ubisoft account, Steam account, mobile account, or guest profile. Do not delete local data if it could contain an unlinked guest profile.
Ubisoft warns that linking a Steam or Ubisoft Connect account to another Growtopia account can make one account primary, and that selecting account data during profile selection can be final. Read the warning in Ubisoft’s account-linking guidance before accepting a profile-selection or unlinking action. If you are unsure which account owns the progress, stop and contact support rather than creating a replacement account.
If the issue persists, contact Ubisoft Growtopia support or use Steam’s technical-support page for a Steam installation issue. Include the exact error, when the freeze occurs, Windows version, Steam/Ubisoft Connect launch path, whether another network or device works, and screenshots of the error and account-link screen. Do not send passwords or verification codes.
