Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Halo Wars 2 will not open, flashes and closes, or crashes later, start by identifying where it was installed and when the failure occurs. Then try the low-risk account, Windows, and app checks below. These are general troubleshooting steps—not guaranteed Halo Wars 2 fixes—and the available sources do not confirm a current game-specific crash defect.
Before changing anything, note your Windows version, storefront, exact symptom, and any error code. The steps differ depending on whether you installed through the Xbox app/Microsoft Store or another storefront. Xbox lists Halo Wars 2 as a PC game with Windows 10 and Xbox Play Anywhere support, but that listing does not establish support for every current Windows configuration or identify a current crash issue: Xbox game listing.

1. Identify where and when the failure happens
- Installation or update fails: Record the error and check which storefront is handling the install.
- The game never opens or briefly flashes and closes: Note whether it happens when launched from the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, or another storefront.
- It crashes after the intro or during play: Record the point at which it closes and any displayed code.
The steps below focus on Microsoft Store/Xbox app troubleshooting because that is where the supplied official support guidance applies. If you use another storefront, use its own support channel; the reviewed sources do not establish current Halo Wars 2-specific repair instructions for Steam.
2. Check the Microsoft account and game entitlement
If you installed through Microsoft Store or Xbox on PC, sign into the Microsoft account used to obtain the game and check that account’s Store library. Microsoft’s Halo Wars 2 installer FAQ gives this advice for entitlement and redemption problems, but it is legacy Windows 10-era guidance: Halo Wars 2 Installation FAQ.

3. Close and reopen the app, then update Windows
- Close the Microsoft Store or Xbox app that you used to install or launch the game.
- Open it again and retry the game.
- Check Windows Update for available updates and install them. Restart if Windows asks you to.
These are Microsoft’s general recommendations for Store-app problems, not a confirmed fix for a particular Halo Wars 2 crash: Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store.
4. Update Microsoft Store
Open Microsoft Store and check its library for app updates. On current Store layouts, use Library and select Get updates; some Windows 10 layouts label the area Downloads and updates. Install available updates, then try launching the game again.

- Instant combat, instant command. Blitz mode is an all-new way to play. Combining tactical combat with card-based strategy, your deck is your army in Blitz as you build collections of powerful Halo vehicles and troops and command those units in fast-action matches
5. Repair or reset the affected app
If restarting and updating do not help, use Windows app settings to repair the Microsoft Store or Xbox app involved. Search Windows Settings for the affected app and open its advanced app options; the exact labels and available controls can vary by Windows version. Try Repair first. Use Reset only if needed, since it resets app data. Microsoft lists app repair/reset among its general Store troubleshooting options: Microsoft Store app troubleshooting.
6. Reinstall only after the basic checks
If the game still will not launch, reinstalling is a later option, not the first one to try. Microsoft includes reinstalling in its general Store-app troubleshooting advice. The older Halo Wars 2 FAQ also suggests updating Windows and then reinstalling if the Store does not recognize an installation or update. Before uninstalling, confirm that you can reinstall from the same account and storefront; follow the current platform’s instructions for the process.

7. Address Gaming Services only for matching errors
If you are on Windows 10 and see error 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F, Microsoft published a Gaming Services reinstall workaround for those specific errors: Microsoft guidance for Gaming Services errors. Do not apply old administrator-level service or registry-removal commands to an unrelated crash. A third-party publisher support page points Xbox PC users to Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool and Xbox app troubleshooting, but describes the tool as beta; check the page for current availability and status before downloading: SEGA Xbox Game Pass for PC troubleshooting.

If the preceding checks fail, a Windows clean boot can help determine whether background software is interfering. A 2019 Microsoft Community response suggested this as a diagnostic step, alongside other general troubleshooting; it is not a verified Halo Wars 2 fix: Microsoft Community discussion. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions for your Windows version, test the launch, and restore normal startup afterward.

If the game remains broken, contact support for the storefront you used. Include your Windows version/build, storefront, the exact error text or code, and whether the failure occurs during installation, at launch, after the intro, or during play. Those details help distinguish an account or app problem from a game crash.
