8 Most Profitable Fish for a Fish Pond in Stardew Valley

Lava Eel is a strong all-around pick for a money-making pond if you want valuable aged roe and useful extra drops. But there is no verified, universal ranking of the eight most profitable pond fish: output is chance-based, varies with species and population, and depends on whether you count side items or can keep up with processing. If “best” means the highest-value aged roe from a single fish, the Legendary fish Legend and Legend II lead the examples here; if it means steady returns from a populated pond, compare likely output and bonus drops as well as price.

How fish pond profit works

A pond can produce roe, and some species can also produce other items at higher populations. Whether an item appears—and which item is selected—depends on species and population; some production rolls yield nothing. That means a fish’s roe price is not the same thing as its expected daily income. Eight fish to consider for a money-making pond

This is a practical shortlist, not a definitive expected-profit ranking. Available source data establish notable prices and mechanics for these candidates, but do not provide a consistent expected daily return for all eight.

1. Lava Eel: a strong all-around candidate

Lava Eel has a base sale price of 700g, making its roe worth 380g and its aged roe worth 760g before the Artisan bonus. Its pond reproduces every five days and can reach a population of ten after completing its quests. At higher population it can also produce gold ore and other drops. 2. Blobfish: valuable roe plus useful extras

Blobfish has a base sale price of 500g, roe worth 280g, and aged roe worth 560g before the Artisan bonus. A pond can produce one or two roe; at population nine or ten, it can also produce a pearl or farm warp totems. 3. Legend: the highest-value roe example

4. Legend II: high-value roe, with roe as its listed output

Legend II also has a 5,000g base sale price, 2,530g roe value, and 5,060g aged-roe value before the Artisan bonus. Its pond holds one fish, and roe is its only listed pond output. The Wiki records pond support in version 1.6.9 and a version 1.6.15 change that increased roe frequency and average daily value; those version notes do not amount to a guaranteed daily yield. 5. Sturgeon: choose it for Caviar

Sturgeon Roe is the exception to the usual aged-roe result: processing it in a Preserves Jar produces Caviar rather than aged roe. That makes Sturgeon the relevant choice if your goal is specifically Caviar, but Caviar should not be compared with other fish’s aged-roe prices as though they were the same product. 6. Other roe-producing fish: compare the formula, not just the fish name

For any other pond fish, use its base sale price to calculate raw roe value with the 30g-plus-half-price formula, then double that value for aged roe unless it is Sturgeon. This gives a consistent unit-price comparison, but it still does not reveal expected daily income: population, output odds, and possible non-roe items also matter.

7. Fish with valuable side products: count what you will actually use

Some species can produce items besides roe once their populations reach particular thresholds. Those can improve a pond’s practical value, especially when a drop is useful to your farm, but they should not be counted as cash profit unless you plan to sell them. Blobfish’s pearl and warp-totem drops and Lava Eel’s gold ore illustrate why side products belong in a comparison.

8. A Golden Animal Cracker pond: a multiplier, not a fish

A Golden Animal Cracker doubles pond output according to the Fish Pond reference. It can change the returns from any eligible setup, so comparisons should say whether the cracker is included. It does not remove the underlying variation in what a pond produces.

Which fish should you choose?

• For a high-value roe item: Legend or Legend II have the highest aged-roe unit value among the documented examples here, at 5,060g before Artisan. Their one-fish ponds and chance-based output make that different from a claim of best expected daily profit.
• For a populated pond with extra drops: Lava Eel is a strong candidate, with 760g aged roe and possible gold ore and other drops at higher population.
• For roe plus useful farm items: Blobfish offers 560g aged roe and, at population nine or ten, a chance at a pearl or farm warp totems.
• For Caviar: use Sturgeon, because its roe processes into Caviar.

For a fair personal comparison, decide whether you mean sale value per item or total value over time. Then account for pond population, the chance and quantity of output, side drops you actually value, jar capacity, the Artisan bonus if applicable, and whether a Golden Animal Cracker is in use. Without those choices and comparable output probabilities, a precise eight-place profit ranking would imply more certainty than the available figures support.
