If Fortnite won’t open on your Windows PC, start with the exact error message—Epic recommends searching its support knowledge base for error-specific steps. If there’s no error, check that your PC meets Fortnite’s current minimum requirements, then work through the software checks below. These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes, and you don’t need to try all eight.
First: identify the launch symptom
Note the exact message, error code, or what happens after you press Play. Epic says PC launch issues can have different causes, so a code-specific support article is a better starting point than a generic checklist. Search the Epic Games Player Support knowledge base for the full error text or code.
If the launcher says “Running,” but no Fortnite window appears
Use Epic’s dedicated troubleshooting steps for Fortnite showing as running without opening. The recommended sequence is to verify the game files, repair Easy Anti-Cheat, and—if the problem remains—add the Fortnite folder to Windows Security exclusions. The general steps below explain verification and the security caveat.
If Easy Anti-Cheat shows an error
Fortnite requires Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC). Epic’s EAC installation instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Accept the Windows installation prompt if it appears during launch; if it doesn’t, follow Epic’s manual installation directions for the game’s EAC files. For the specific “Couldn’t start the game” message, Epic says to reinstall EAC using those instructions. Don’t download EAC from unofficial sites or remove system or anti-cheat files based on forum workarounds.

1. Check the error and your PC’s minimum requirements
If no specific error points you toward a fix, compare your system with the requirements currently listed on the Fortnite Epic Games Store page. Epic’s published specifications are:

Epic lists the VRAM and NVMe items as additional notes; don’t treat them as extra minimum requirements. Check the live requirements page for the latest wording. Epic’s troubleshooting guidance says that if a PC is below the minimum, you’ll need a different device or an upgrade; if it meets the minimum, continue with software troubleshooting. Consider a compatible graphics-card upgrade only if the current GPU fails the minimum check and the rest of the PC supports an upgrade.

2. Verify Fortnite’s game files
File verification checks for missing or damaged game files and is an early step in Epic’s general troubleshooting sequence. It’s also the first step in the “Running” but no window branch.
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Open your Library and find Fortnite.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the game, then choose Manage and Verify if those options appear in your launcher.
- Wait for verification to finish, then try launching Fortnite again.

3. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
Epic says clearing the launcher cache can resolve display issues or errors that prevent the launcher or games from working correctly. On Windows:
- Exit the Epic Games Launcher completely.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncherSaved. - Delete the
webcachefolders you find there, if present. - Reopen the launcher and try Fortnite again.
Only remove the listed cache folders; this step is not a reason to delete unrelated files.

4. Try DirectX 11 if Fortnite is using DirectX 12
Epic includes switching to DirectX 11 as a later troubleshooting option for PCs using DirectX 12. Because Epic’s linked instructions were unavailable when checked, confirm the current steps in Epic Support before changing launch settings. Don’t guess at a launch argument or make registry changes.

Epic recommends current graphics drivers because outdated drivers may not communicate correctly with the hardware. Use the driver source for the GPU in your PC: Intel, Nvidia, or AMD. Restart Windows after installing an update, then try the game again.

6. Run the Epic Games Launcher as administrator
This can help when permissions are contributing to a launch problem. Right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut, choose Run as administrator, and then start Fortnite. Treat this as a troubleshooting test rather than a reason to run the launcher with elevated permissions permanently.
7. Reinstall only after the earlier checks fail
Epic’s broader sequence includes reinstalling the Epic Games Launcher, reinstalling Fortnite, and trying Fortnite on a different drive later in the process. These steps take more time than verification, cache clearing, or driver updates, so reserve them for persistent problems. Follow Epic’s current PC troubleshooting guide for uninstall and reinstall directions rather than removing files manually.
8. Check security, startup conflicts, and the drive
If the earlier steps haven’t resolved the problem, Epic’s troubleshooting options include these more involved checks:
- Windows Security exclusion: Epic suggests adding the Fortnite folder to Windows Security’s exclusions in some cases, including the “Running” with no window symptom. An exclusion changes which files Windows Security scans. Use Epic’s directions, exclude only the relevant Fortnite folder, and don’t broadly disable protection if you’re unsure.
- Clean boot: A clean boot can help investigate whether a startup program or service conflicts with the game. Follow Epic’s instructions and restore normal startup settings after testing.
- Check the drive: Epic includes checking the drive for errors and trying Fortnite on a different drive among later troubleshooting options.
- Remove the FortniteGame folder from Local AppData: This is another late-stage option in Epic’s general guide. Follow its current directions so you target the correct folder.
If these checks don’t help, Epic’s guidance points to the hardware manufacturer for unresolved PC issues. For any security or system-level step you’re not comfortable performing, seek support rather than disabling protection or deleting other files.
Don’t confuse tournament security rules with launch requirements
Epic’s February 10, 2026 notice says Secure Boot, TPM, and IOMMU would be required for PC players in all tournaments starting February 19, 2026. That notice concerns tournament participation; it does not establish that those settings are required for every ordinary Fortnite launch.
