Revealed in January 2026 as a portrait-focused iPhone controller, it is now listed by 8BitDo at $29.99 in G Classic and EDC Black Edition variants. The compact wired gamepad connects through USB-C and folds over the bottom of a phone’s portrait display, making it especially interesting for retro games and other controller-supported vertical titles.

What is the 8BitDo FlipPad?
The FlipPad is a small, hinged mobile controller designed specifically for portrait-oriented gaming. Rather than holding a phone between two landscape grips, you plug the controller into the phone’s USB-C port and flip its controls down over the lower section of the screen.

The hinge also lets you move the controls away from the display without unplugging the accessory when you need to read a message, take a call, or interact with the covered portion of the screen.
#1 Best Overall
- Weighs 24.8 grams featuring 16 buttons. Ultra-portable and versatile.
- Made for 2D games
8BitDo first revealed the FlipPad around CES 2026, describing it as an iPhone-focused, portrait-mode controller arriving in summer. The later retail listing expands that compatibility to Android phones as well. The original CES announcement did not include a final price or complete specifications.
Price, editions, and availability
8BitDo lists the FlipPad at $29.99 USD. The available designs are:
- G Classic
- EDC Black Edition, listed as an 8BitDo eShop exclusive
The official store listing said units were scheduled to ship from July 31, 2026. However, the store’s availability signal has shown sold-out information in search results, so “listed at $29.99” is safer than promising immediate delivery. Check the live product page for current stock.
How the flip design works
- Insert the FlipPad’s USB-C connector into the phone.
- Flip or rotate the controller down so its controls sit at the bottom of the portrait display.
- Play using the physical buttons.
- Fold the controller away when you need to use the screen without removing it from the phone.
The controller’s main advantage is this attached-but-foldable design. A conventional Bluetooth gamepad must be held separately or removed from the phone’s setup; the FlipPad is intended to stay connected while you switch between gaming and normal phone use.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
8BitDo rates the hinge for more than 6,000 open-and-close cycles and the USB-C port for more than 10,000 insertions. These are manufacturer durability ratings, not independent test results. See 8BitDo’s specifications.
Controls: physical buttons, but no listed analog sticks
The FlipPad has a D-pad, ABXY face buttons, Start and Select controls, plus additional buttons positioned around the upper and lower areas of the controller. The available official information does not provide a complete mapping guide for every extra button, so they should not be assumed to be custom-assignable.
8BitDo’s published specifications and product imagery do not list analog sticks. That makes the FlipPad a natural fit for 2D platformers, arcade games, puzzle titles, turn-based games, classic-console software, and retro emulators. It is a less obvious choice for modern 3D games built around dual-stick movement and camera control.

8BitDo lists support for:
- iOS 26.2 and later
- Android 13 and later
- Wired USB connectivity
For iPhone buyers, that means a compatible USB-C iPhone, not a Lightning-only model. The operating-system requirement is only part of the fit question: the phone’s port position, thickness, camera housing, and case can affect how securely the controller attaches.

8BitDo says the FlipPad works with most phone cases. That is a manufacturer claim rather than a guarantee for every model. Thick rugged cases, port covers, unusually raised edges, or a case that changes the phone’s thickness may interfere with the connector or hinge. Check the port area before buying and be particularly cautious if you use a heavy-duty case.
What games can you play?
The FlipPad is aimed at retro games and mobile titles that support external controllers. Its portrait-first shape is particularly appealing for:
- Game Boy-style and other vertical retro games
- Arcade and puzzle games
- Classic-console emulators with D-pad-based controls
- Portrait mobile games with standard controller support
- Short gaming sessions where a lightweight accessory is useful
Controller recognition is not the same as universal game compatibility. A game or emulator must accept external controller input, and its layout must work with a D-pad-and-button controller. Titles that depend on touch gestures, motion controls, analog sticks, triggers, or landscape orientation may not be a good fit.
On Apple devices, 8BitDo’s compatibility guidance refers to games and apps that support MFi controllers. The FlipPad will not automatically turn every touch-only game into a physical-control game. Review 8BitDo’s Apple compatibility guidance for the broader software caveat.

- Officially licensed by Xbox. Bluetooth connection. Supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers - Upgraded. Robust and long-lasting. Offering higher precision and sensitivity.
- Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.
- Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on mobile.
Wired USB-C trade-offs
The wired connection avoids Bluetooth pairing and means 8BitDo does not advertise a built-in battery that needs separate charging. It also makes the phone’s USB-C port part of the physical setup.
That can be convenient for quick play, but it may be less flexible if you want to charge the phone, connect wired audio, or use another USB-C accessory at the same time. The available official material does not establish that the FlipPad offers pass-through charging or accessory passthrough, so buyers should not assume those features are available.
The controller also covers part of the lower display while in use. That may be harmless in games designed around portrait play, but it can obscure menus, text, virtual buttons, or active play areas placed near the bottom of the screen.

Who should buy the FlipPad?
The FlipPad makes the most sense if you:
- Prefer portrait-oriented games.
- Play retro titles that benefit from a D-pad and physical buttons.
- Use a USB-C iPhone or Android phone meeting the listed OS requirements.
- Want a lightweight wired accessory with no advertised battery-management requirement.
- Value being able to fold the controller away without unplugging it.
- Want a lower-cost alternative to a larger mobile gamepad.
Who should choose something else?
Look at a conventional mobile controller instead if you mainly play landscape games, need analog sticks, want wireless connectivity, or use a Lightning-only iPhone. The FlipPad may also be a poor match for games centered on touch gestures, motion input, or analog triggers.
8BitDo’s Ultimate Mobile Controller is the more conventional alternative within the company’s range: it is intended for landscape gaming and offers a broader gamepad-style layout with wireless support and analog-stick-oriented controls. It does not provide the FlipPad’s compact hinged portrait arrangement.
Comparison coverage also identifies the Bluetooth-based GameSir Pocket Taco as a conceptual rival, with reported pricing around $34.99, and the Abxylute M4 as another Bluetooth alternative with a reported $49.99 list price. Those prices and features come from secondary coverage and may change; neither is as directly verified here as the FlipPad’s official $29.99 listing. See the cited comparison coverage.
Bottom line
The 8BitDo FlipPad is a real $29.99 product, not merely the CES 2026 teaser described in the original announcement. Its appeal is specific: a tiny, wired, button-focused controller for portrait gaming on compatible USB-C iPhones and Android phones. It is worth considering for retro and vertical games, but landscape players, analog-stick users, and anyone needing wireless or universal case compatibility should choose a different controller.
