Short answer: The 8BitDo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller is a strong value for Android phone owners who want full-size controls, Hall Effect sticks and triggers, and two programmable rear paddles in one telescopic unit. It supports phones measuring 100–170 mm in length and requires Android 13 or newer. The main compromises are Bluetooth-only phone connectivity, uncertain clearance for thick cases and camera bumps, and game-by-game controller support.
“Stretchable” is a description, not the official product name. The product is the 8BitDo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller, a telescopic controller that grips the phone between its two halves. See the official product specifications before buying.

What the controller is
This is a telescopic Bluetooth gamepad rather than a conventional controller with a detachable phone clip. The body extends around a phone, keeping the screen centered between the controls. The standard model and the separately licensed Xbox Edition are different variants. The Xbox version adds Xbox branding and an Xbox button and is specifically marketed for Xbox Cloud Gaming.
#1 Best Overall
- Officially licensed by Xbox. Bluetooth connection. Supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers - Upgraded. Robust and long-lasting. Offering higher precision and sensitivity.
- Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.
- Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on mobile.
Phone fit and Android compatibility
Check the operating-system requirement
For this exact model, 8BitDo lists Android 13.0 and above. Older manuals for other Ultimate controllers may mention Android 9, but those documents should not be treated as interchangeable with this product.
Measure more than the phone’s length
8BitDo specifies a 100–170 mm device-length range. That is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every phone in that range will seat correctly. The controller itself measures 198.0 × 103.0 × 53.5 mm and weighs 236 g.
- Check the phone’s thickness and the thickness of its case.
- Look for interference from raised camera guards, kickstands, battery cases, MagSafe-style accessories or corner bumpers.
- Make sure the grips do not obstruct the USB-C port, speakers or side buttons.
- Consider the combined weight and center of gravity of your phone and the extended controller for long sessions.
Remove the case for a fit test before relying on the controller. The official page does not provide a complete phone model or case-clearance list.
Controls and hardware
Hall Effect sticks and triggers
Hall Effect sensing measures movement magnetically and is designed to reduce the traditional potentiometer-wear concerns associated with analog controls. It is not a promise that drift, dirt or every mechanical failure is impossible.
Rank #2
- Compatible with Android devices and fits mobile devices ranging from 100mm to 170mm in length.
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons
- Profile button. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Turbo function.
Full controls with rear paddles
You get two analog sticks, analog triggers, a D-pad, face buttons and tactile bumpers. Two rear paddles can be assigned in software, giving racing, action and accessibility players extra inputs without removing a thumb from a stick. A profile button and turbo function are also included. Metal joystick rings and enhanced grips are intended to improve durability and handling, but no independent durability test is supplied.
How to connect it to an Android phone
The product page confirms Bluetooth connectivity but does not publish a unique button sequence in its search-facing documentation. Use the included manual for the exact pairing control rather than copying instructions for another Ultimate model.
- Charge the controller.
- Turn it on and enter Bluetooth pairing mode using the control identified in the included manual.
- On Android, open Settings → Connected devices → Pair new device. Manufacturers may use slightly different labels.
- Select the controller when its Bluetooth name appears.
- Wait for Android to show it as connected or for the status light to become steady.
- Open a game with controller support and configure its controls if necessary.
An example of model-specific 8BitDo Android documentation is available here, but that page covers a different Ultimate controller and should not be used as this model’s definitive button map.
What you can play
Native Android games
Android can recognize a Bluetooth gamepad while an individual game may still be touchscreen-only. Check the game’s own controller setting, tutorial and button-mapping options. A successful Bluetooth connection does not make every Android title compatible, and third-party mapping tools may be restricted by a game’s terms.

Cloud gaming and remote play
The controller is suitable for Android clients such as Xbox Cloud Gaming, Steam Link and GeForce NOW when those apps accept standard Bluetooth gamepads. The Xbox Edition is the more natural choice for Xbox users because of its licensed layout and Xbox button; Xbox Cloud Gaming also requires a Game Pass Ultimate membership according to 8BitDo. Do not assume the standard model provides the same Xbox-specific experience.
Emulation
Two sticks, analog triggers, a D-pad and conventional face buttons suit many emulator layouts, while the rear paddles can hold optional shortcuts. Actual compatibility depends on the emulator’s input configuration and the system being emulated.
Bluetooth behavior and perceived responsiveness depend on the phone, radio environment, Android software and streaming service. The available official material does not provide independent latency, polling-rate or input-resolution measurements, so this is not a verified competitive-performance claim.

Firmware and Samsung troubleshooting
8BitDo’s support page lists firmware v1.03 as fixing usage issues on some Samsung devices. Samsung owners should update before concluding that the phone or controller is defective.
For desktop Ultimate Software V2 recognition, 8BitDo’s official instructions say to turn the controller off, connect it by USB while holding LB + RB, and then launch the software. This is a firmware/software-recognition procedure, not the normal Android play connection.
- Install the current firmware.
- Forget the controller in Android’s saved Bluetooth devices.
- Restart both phone and controller.
- Pair again and confirm Android 13 or later.
- Test without the case.
- Try a second controller-supported game.
- If the app does not recognize the controller, follow 8BitDo’s exact USB procedure instead of improvising from another model.
Battery, charging and portability
The controller contains a 300 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery. 8BitDo advertises approximately 13 hours of playtime and a 1.5-hour charging time. These are manufacturer figures, not independent endurance results; vibration, connection conditions, playing habits and battery age can change actual runtime.

Standard model or Xbox Edition?
| Choose the standard model when… | Choose the Xbox Edition when… |
|---|---|
| You want general Android gaming, emulation or streaming. | Xbox Cloud Gaming is your primary use. |
| You do not need an Xbox button or Xbox licensing. | You want the Xbox-branded layout and button. |
| You are comparing the least expensive version. | You already use Game Pass Ultimate and value Xbox-specific controls. |
Both product pages list the core telescopic design, Hall Effect controls, rear paddles, 100–170 mm fit range, 236 g weight, 300 mAh battery and advertised 13-hour runtime. Xbox Cloud Gaming requires Game Pass Ultimate. Compare the standard specifications with the Xbox Edition page before ordering.
Price, availability and alternatives
The official U.S. store listed the standard controller at $49.99 when checked, but also showed it as sold out. Treat that as a dated price and stock signal, not a guaranteed current street price; retailer availability and promotions change.
If the controller is unavailable or does not match your needs, compare categories rather than assuming every model has the same trade-offs:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- USB-C telescopic controllers: offer a direct wired phone connection, but connector placement and case compatibility can be less forgiving.
- Other Bluetooth telescopic controllers: may differ in platform coverage, software and analog features; check the exact model.
- Backbone-style controllers: often emphasize app ecosystems and portability; examine connector design, case support and any service requirements.
- Traditional Bluetooth gamepads with phone clips: can also serve a TV or PC, but are less compact than an integrated telescopic unit.
Who should buy it?
- Android 13+ owners: yes, if your phone and case physically clear the grips.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming players: consider the Xbox Edition for its licensed layout; the standard model is more general-purpose.
- Emulation and remote-play users: yes, provided your emulator or client supports standard Bluetooth input.
- Competitive players: be cautious; no independent latency or polling measurements are documented.
- Older-phone owners: no, unless 8BitDo confirms support beyond the current Android 13 requirement.
- Anyone requiring wired USB-C or phone charging: choose a controller that explicitly provides those features.
The Bottom Line
The 8BitDo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller is worth buying when you want a well-equipped telescopic Bluetooth pad for an Android 13-or-newer phone, and your case fits within its physical limits. Hall Effect controls, rear paddles and software profiles make it unusually capable at its stated price, but Bluetooth-only operation, game-specific support and uncertain case clearance prevent it from being a universal mobile-gaming solution.
