9 Best Body Mods for Skyrim: CBBE 3BA, BHUNP, HIMBO, and More

The best Skyrim body mod depends on your character, preferred shape, outfit conversions, physics setup, and game version—not a universal ranking.

There is no evidence-based universal winner among Skyrim body mods: the right choice depends on the character you want, the outfits you plan to use, and your physics and game-version setup. For a female body framework, compare CBBE 3BA and BHUNP; for a male framework, consider HIMBO. The other entries below are practical parts of the same body-mod ecosystem—outfit conversions and shape presets—not nine interchangeable body meshes.

What counts as a Skyrim body mod?

“Body mod” can mean several different things. A body framework supplies a character body mesh; a BodySlide preset defines a shape to build; a skin texture changes surface appearance; and an outfit conversion adapts clothing or armor to a particular body. These are related, but they are not substitutes for one another.

That distinction matters when people ask “CBBE or 3BA?”: the community discussion at Nexus Mods reflects the terminology question, while the practical rule is to choose a body family first and then use matching presets and outfit files. BodySlide builds are often specific to the selected body and clothing. [This link is not tied to a specific page, remove]

The nine entries below are curated by role and compatibility usefulness, not a quality ranking. Current conversion pages show support for several named body families; they do not establish that one body looks or performs better for everyone.

9 useful Skyrim body-mod choices and supporting options

1. CBBE 3BA: a female-body framework option

CBBE 3BA is a prominent female-body framework choice in current community discussions and outfit conversions. Consider it when the particular clothes and armor you want list 3BA support, and check whether their BodySlide files match the body setup you intend to build. Its presence in conversion pages is evidence of compatibility options, not proof that it is objectively better than BHUNP.

2. BHUNP: another female-body framework option

BHUNP is an alternative female-body framework. Choose between BHUNP and CBBE 3BA based on the shape you prefer and, just as importantly, which conversions exist for the outfits you actually plan to use. Community questions such as “Which one BHUNP or CBBE?” express a common decision, but do not supply a consensus answer.

3. HIMBO: a male-body framework option

HIMBO is the male-body choice among the frameworks covered here. Outfit conversions can be specific to HIMBO, just as they can be specific to female-body families. Before installing an armor conversion, verify that its files target HIMBO rather than assuming any body-compatible outfit will fit.

4. CBBE: a body family to check separately from 3BA

CBBE appears as its own conversion target alongside CBBE 3BA on some outfit pages. Treat those labels as distinct options when selecting files: a page may offer one, both, or neither. Do not infer that a conversion marked CBBE automatically provides the 3BA build you want.

5. BodySlide presets: choose a shape and build the matching meshes

A preset is a shape configuration rather than a separate body framework. Check the preset’s stated body family and use it with compatible BodySlide files for both the body and outfits. A forum discussion notes that the preset should correspond to the selected body type and clothing or armor. See the Nexus Mods discussion for the terminology context.

6. Dragon Carved Armor conversions: a practical compatibility example

The Dragon Carved Armor conversion page lists separate CBBE, 3BA, and HIMBO conversions, and says each slide file requires its corresponding body mod. The page was last updated July 3, 2026. Use it as an example of how to identify a matching outfit build, not as a body-mod endorsement: Dragon Carved Armor conversion.

7. High Priests conversions: options with and without physics

A High Priests conversion page lists 3BA, BHUNP, CBBE, and HIMBO options, with separate physics and non-physics builds. Uploaded September 11, 2026, it illustrates why you should inspect the exact file and requirements rather than assume that every conversion for a body family uses the same setup: High Priests conversion.

8. Christmas Fantasy Outfit conversions: check the game-version note

This outfit page lists BHUNP, CBBE, CBBE 3BA, and HIMBO support, but its author says it was made using Skyrim Special Edition 1.5.97 and may not be able to support 1.6.x and later. That warning applies to this mod page; it is not a blanket compatibility verdict for the body frameworks. Confirm the notes for the exact file you plan to install: Christmas Fantasy Outfit conversion.

9. Physics-ready outfit conversions: verify dependencies per mod

Physics is a setup choice, not a guaranteed feature of every body or outfit conversion. Some pages provide a non-physics build; others list a physics requirement. For example, the More Scarves page lists HDT-SMP or FSMP as a requirement for physics and reports version 1.4.0, updated February 21, 2026. Check the specific page before choosing a file: More Scarves conversion.

How to choose a body framework without breaking outfit compatibility

  1. Decide which character body you are changing. Compare female options such as CBBE 3BA and BHUNP, or the male option HIMBO. The desired look is personal preference; the available evidence does not support an aesthetic ranking.
  2. Check your must-have clothing and armor first. Open each outfit’s mod page and look for the exact framework label—CBBE, 3BA, BHUNP, or HIMBO. A Dragon Carved Armor page, for example, lists separate builds and says each slide file needs its corresponding body.
  3. Match BodySlide files and presets. Use a preset intended for the chosen body family, and build both the body and clothing meshes with compatible files. The forum guidance on presets emphasizes matching the selected body and outfit.
  4. Decide whether you want physics. Read the requirements for the body and each outfit. Confirm whether a non-physics build exists and whether a physics framework is required for the version you select.
  5. Read the game-version notes on each page. Do not assume that a conversion built or maintained for one Skyrim version supports another. The Christmas Fantasy Outfit page’s 1.5.97 and 1.6.x warning is specific to that page.

Common questions behind “CBBE or 3BA?”

Some mod pages list CBBE and CBBE 3BA as separate conversion options, so the safest approach is to select the file explicitly matching the body framework installed. Likewise, “Should I switch from BHUNP to 3BA?” is a preference and compatibility decision rather than a question with a documented universal answer. Check your desired outfits, BodySlide support, physics needs, and Skyrim version before changing frameworks.
