Silent Hill: Townfall is worth considering if you want a tense, exploratory horror game built around reading danger as much as confronting it. Its first-person viewpoint and CRTV make information-gathering part of survival, while its stealth-and-puzzle design gives the setting room to unsettle. But the stealth emphasis and some demanding puzzles may frustrate players looking for a more direct combat rhythm. That verdict reflects the published reviews discussed below, not a universal critical consensus.

What kind of game is Silent Hill: Townfall?

Released September 24, 2026, SILENT HILL: Townfall is a full-length, first-person entry in the series, developed by Scotland’s Screen Burn Interactive and co-published by Annapurna Interactive and Konami. It is available for PlayStation 5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, according to Konami.

You play Simon Ordell, who returns to the remote fictional island town of St. Amelia, off the coast of Scotland, to put things right. The story unfolds through fog-bound streets and shorelines, fractured clues, and connections to people who once lived there. Konami’s launch description emphasizes memory and silence; the setting is not simply an abandoned town, but one the developers describe as recently lived in and marked by its own trauma.

The move to first person changes more than the camera. It narrows what you can see around Simon, making sound, scanning, and cautious movement central to how you read a space. That shift is the game’s defining design choice—and the reason its signature tool matters so much.

Silent Hill Townfall - Day One Edition - PS5
  • Day One Edition Bonus: CRTV Style: Rusted, CRTV Style: Beach Edition
  • Returning to an island town to ‘put things right’, Simon Ordell descends into a world of tense evasion, explosive confrontations, and mind-bending puzzles that slowly surface the truth of St. Amelia
  • Simon Ordell is called back to the island of St. Amelia to ‘put things right’, encountering a town lying quiet beneath a heavy fog, seemingly abandoned but not at rest
  • Venturing deeper, and driven to understand his connection to the place and its inhabitants, Simon begins to discover fragments of a past rising to the surface
  • Experienced entirely in first person, Simon must explore, evade, and survive using a limited set of weapons and tools, including the CRTV, a pocket television used to tune into unstable signals. Evasion is tense; combat is frenetic, while narrative driven puzzles reveal a truth that refuses to stay submerged

What does the CRTV do?

The CRTV is a handheld pocket television that takes the place of the series’ familiar radio. It tunes into unstable analog signals to help detect nearby threats, reveal clues, and solve environmental puzzles. The developer’s stated aim was to make the radio an active visual and audio instrument rather than a warning device that only signals danger.

That makes the CRTV both a survival tool and a way of exploring the story. You use it to gather information while navigating, rather than treating investigation as a separate activity. Writer and director Jon McKellan told PlayStation that “the CRTV couldn’t work from any other perspective”—a succinct explanation of how closely the device is tied to Townfall’s first-person design.

Silent Hill Townfall - Day One Edition - PS5
  • Day One Edition Bonus: CRTV Style: Rusted, CRTV Style: Beach Edition
  • When Simon Ordell is called back to the island of St. Amelia to "put things in order", he meets a city lying quietly in dense fog, seemingly abandoned, yet anything but dormant
  • After venturing further to understand his connection to this place and its inhabitants, he gradually discovers fragments of the past rising to the surface
  • Simon must explore, evade and survive from a first-person perspective. It uses a limited arsenal of weapons and tools, including the CRTV: a portable TV to receive unstable signals
  • The dodging is tension, the battles are hectic and the story-based puzzles reveal a truth that does not want to remain hidden

PC Gamer’s reviewer praised the CRTV as an unusually useful aid for puzzles and navigation, but also found its threat readings imperfect: it could be imprecise about enemy distance and could not show several enemies on one frequency at once. That limitation is important to the experience described in that review: the device encourages careful scanning, but does not always give a complete or precise picture.

Is Townfall mostly stealth?

Stealth is a major pillar, but the official description presents a choice: avoid danger where possible and confront it when necessary. A PlayStation hands-on preview described throwing bottles or bricks to distract enemies, and using nearby radios or televisions to draw them away. These are specific ways to make a route through danger rather than simply waiting for every threat to pass.

Published reviewers differ in how they frame that balance. Tom’s Guide treats stealth as a key part of the game’s tension and compares its repeated threat-scanning rhythm to Alien: Isolation. El País’ opinion review emphasizes vulnerability and reads the design as favoring flight over combat. PC Gamer’s reviewer, writing about a 13-hour PC playthrough on normal difficulty, said they often avoided weapons. These are individual assessments, not evidence that every player will experience the balance the same way.

The approach can make encounters tense because you have to gather information and decide whether to slip by, distract a threat, or fight. Its trade-off is that limited or imprecise information can make stealth feel less readable, particularly when you are trying to judge where an enemy is. The sources do not establish that combat is absent or that every encounter requires hiding.

How do the puzzles and story fit together?

Townfall delivers parts of its narrative through fragmented clues and puzzles, linking the work of understanding the town with the work of surviving it. That structure suits a story built around broken memories and connections to former residents: exploration is not just a search for the next route, but also a way to assemble context.

Reviewers have also flagged the cost of that approach. PC Gamer’s review describes a late-game puzzle that took effort, while El País’ opinion review foregrounds difficult puzzles. Those accounts support a clear expectation: puzzle-solving is a substantial part of the experience, and its challenge may be a sticking point if you prefer horror that moves more quickly between encounters.

What do reviews praise—and where do they find friction?

Source and format What it highlights Qualification
PC Gamer, post-release review Lived-in detail in St. Amelia and the CRTV’s usefulness for puzzles and navigation. The reviewer’s roughly 13-hour PC playthrough also found enemy-position information imperfect and a late puzzle challenging.
Tom’s Guide, post-release review Strong praise for the first-person perspective, story, setting, encounters, and the CRTV’s multiple uses. This is one reviewer’s strongly positive judgment, not an aggregate score or proof of universal agreement.
El País / Babelia, opinion review Frames vulnerability, hiding, and infiltration as central to the horror. The opinion piece also foregrounds difficult puzzles; its interpretation is not a measured consensus.
PlayStation hands-on preview Describes observed stealth tools, including thrown distractions and luring enemies with devices. It covers about four hours and is a pre-release preview, so it is evidence about the mechanics encountered, not a final review verdict.

Together, these accounts support the game’s core appeal: a distinctive first-person perspective, a setting worth investigating, and a device that connects clues to survival. They also point to its main risks for players: stealth can depend on imperfect threat information, and the puzzles can demand patience. The available reviews do not establish an exhaustive critic consensus or a review-score aggregate.

Is Silent Hill: Townfall worth playing?

Townfall looks most promising for players who enjoy atmospheric exploration, piecing together a fragmented story, and deciding how to manage threats rather than relying on combat alone. The CRTV gives those activities a clear mechanical center, and the first-person view makes its scanning role feel integral to the design.

It is a more cautious recommendation if you want a consistently direct action-horror experience or dislike puzzles that can stall progress. The criticism here is not that stealth replaces every other option; it is that the game’s emphasis on evasion and uncertain information may make some encounters less satisfying for players who would rather fight their way through.
