Can a Used CPU Get You Banned in VALORANT? Riot Responds to Player’s Claim

A reported VALORANT hardware restriction after a used Ryzen 7 5800X3D prompted Riot to clarify how long hardware bans last and whether they extend to other components.

Possibly, according to one player’s account—but the case is not independently verified, and Riot disputes key details. A German VALORANT player reportedly said the game stopped working after they installed a used AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D that had been restricted because of its previous owner. Riot anti-cheat lead Phillip Koskinas said hardware bans last no more than four months, apply only to the game where cheating was detected, and do not automatically add every other PC component to a denylist when one component matches.

What the player says happened

Dexerto reports that Reddit user After-Cartoonist-196 posted on the German-language PCBaumeister forum that they bought a secondhand Ryzen 7 5800X3D on September 21, 2026. VALORANT had worked with their previous CPU, the player reportedly said, but stopped them when they launched the game after the swap.

The player said Riot Support told them the CPU’s hardware identifier had been restricted on August 12, 2026, after the previous owner cheated. The player also reportedly said Support told them other components, including the motherboard and storage, had been flagged. Those details are the player’s account as relayed in press coverage; the support exchange and alleged previous-owner cause have not been independently verified.

ComputerBase reports that the processor functioned technically and that the problem arose when VALORANT started. That does not establish that the CPU was defective—or confirm exactly why the game stopped the player.

What Riot disputes—and what remains unresolved

In a statement posted October 2, 2026, Riot anti-cheat lead Phillip Koskinas said: “Hardware bans last 4 months maximum, they apply only to the game cheats were detected in, and we don’t ban "everything else" when we match one component. Support will give you the time remaining on request.” ComputerBase quoted Koskinas’s statement; Dexerto also reported on the response.

Koskinas also reportedly said he could not find a support ticket matching the details in the story and called the account “pretty unlikely.” His comments dispute important parts of the account, but they are not a case-specific review proving that the player’s reported experience could not have happened. The individual case remains unresolved.

Question Player’s reported account Riot’s reported position
Did the restriction follow the CPU? The player said the game stopped working after they installed the used Ryzen 7 5800X3D and that Support attributed a restriction to its identifier. Koskinas’s comments describe hardware matching, but do not confirm this CPU’s status or the player’s case.
Were other PC components also flagged? The player reportedly said Support named the motherboard and storage as well. Koskinas said Riot does not ban “everything else” when it matches one component.
How long can a hardware restriction last? The player reportedly said the restriction began August 12, 2026. Koskinas said hardware bans last no more than four months. If the reported start date is accurate, that maximum would put the end around mid-December 2026; it is not a confirmed expiry date for this player.
Does it apply to every game? The account concerns VALORANT. Koskinas said a hardware ban applies only to the game where cheating was detected.

What Riot’s official VALORANT policy says

Riot’s VALORANT support article, dated May 31, 2026, describes Vanguard as “Our anti-cheat and security software that runs perpetually to block cheat software and detect cheat hardware.” It says cheating with auto-clickers, aimbots, or other unauthorized hardware or software that gives an unfair advantage will result in a permanent account ban.

That is Riot’s general cheating policy, not confirmation of the reported CPU restriction. The support page does not explain Vanguard’s exact hardware-identification method, establish what happened in this player’s case, or equate a temporary hardware restriction with a permanent account ban.

How often does a used component affect a new owner?

ComputerBase attributes a figure of fewer than a dozen cases to Koskinas, describing them as instances Riot had recorded in which a hardware restriction affected a new owner through a used component. The report gives no time period or counting method, so the figure cannot be used to estimate how likely this is for buyers generally. It is a reported count, not a published incidence study.

What to do if VALORANT stops you after a hardware change

  1. Ask Riot Support about the restriction. Koskinas said Support can provide the remaining time on request.
  2. Describe the problem and hardware change clearly. Explain when the game stopped launching or allowing play and which component you changed, without assuming the component is confirmed as the cause.
  3. Do not treat routine hardware checks as a ban-status lookup. The reporting does not establish a public tool that can check a used CPU’s Vanguard status before purchase, nor does it support claims that a receipt, stress test, CPU diagnostic, Windows reinstall, or account change will reveal or clear a restriction.

The report names the Ryzen 7 5800X3D because it was the component in this account; it does not establish that the model itself is affected, or that buying another 5800X3D would resolve a restriction tied to a previously used unit.
