Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is worth considering if you enjoy a dark, layered murder mystery and dialogue-led visual novels. It is not an action horror game: its investigations use a traditional command menu, and some critics found the pacing or mechanics dated. A free Nintendo Switch demo reaches Chapter 3 and lets you carry progress into the full game, so it offers a practical way to see whether the format suits you.

What kind of game is Emio – The Smiling Man?

Emio is a Japanese adventure visual novel and detective game for Nintendo Switch. You play an assistant private investigator at the Utsugi Detective Agency, investigating a student’s murder by connecting clues and testimony. Nintendo describes the case as echoing unsolved murders from 18 years earlier and an urban legend about Emio, a killer said to give victims “a smile that will last forever.” (Nintendo’s announcement)

Investigation proceeds through a command menu offering a limited set of ways to interact with characters and surroundings. The appeal is following the case through dialogue and deduction, not controlling an action hero or navigating a sprawling branching system. If you want fast-paced scares or elaborate interactive exploration, the basic format may feel restrictive.

Is Emio worth playing?

It is a stronger fit for players who prize mystery, writing, characters, and atmosphere over modern investigative conveniences. Reviews frequently praised the story, but differed on how well its mechanics and pacing serve it.

Review source Score What the review says
Nintendo Life 7/10 — Nintendo Life, 2024 Praised the mystery, writing, characters, and evocative art; criticized the limited modernization and lack of cues when conversation options are exhausted. It reported smooth performance in handheld and docked play on the Switch it tested.
Reviews summarized by Nintendo Life Vooks: 5/5; Digitally Downloaded: 4.5/5; God is a Geek: 8.5/10; Siliconera: 8/10; Eurogamer: 3/5 The roundup showed a wide spread of opinion, with story and writing often praised and mechanics, pacing, or trial-and-error among the reservations.
Metacritic, as reported by Nintendo Life 78 — historical snapshot reported August 28, 2024 This is a dated figure, not a current live score.
Nintendo Everything No score stated here Nicholas Serpa found the opening and ending compelling, but criticized the middle’s pacing, writing, and character development. That is one critic’s view, not a universal verdict.

The practical takeaway is that the mystery is the main draw, while the investigation interface and stretches of slower pacing are the main risks. Nintendo Life also reported smooth performance in its own review; that observation describes its tested Switch experience, not a general hardware benchmark.

Is it scary, or mainly a detective mystery?

The game uses a disturbing murder case, a paper-bag smiley-face image, and the legend of a killer as horror elements, but its play is centered on investigation and conversation rather than action. Expect a dark crime story and unsettling subject matter more than an action-led horror format. The premise involves murder and death; the available description does not establish more specific content details, so players with particular sensitivities may want to review the official synopsis before starting.

Do you need to play the earlier Famicom Detective Club games first?

Nintendo calls this the first new Famicom Detective Club story in 35 years. The supplied official description presents the case and player role directly, and does not state an earlier-game prerequisite. It is reasonable to approach it as a new case, though the available sources do not make a detailed claim about every connection to prior entries.

Nintendo UK says the free Switch demo covers the game through Chapter 3 and allows progress to transfer to the full game. That is especially useful here: the demo can show whether the menu-driven investigation and dialogue-heavy pace work for you before you commit.
