The same page showed an 8.8 user score from 13,492 ratings. That is a separate measure from the critic Metascore: it comes from user ratings, not the 115 critic reviews, and should not be read as another version of the same poll.
Why are critics divided?
The split reflects a game whose scale and freedom are a major draw for some players, but whose systems and moment-to-moment feel can be barriers for others. The examples below illustrate that range; they do not represent every review in Metacritic’s total.

World size and freedom are the strongest attractions
A Metacritic-listed Wccftech review praised the world’s density and the freedom of its sandbox. Another review excerpt highlighted the amount of content and exploration, while cautioning that learning systems through trial and error may frustrate some players. PC Gamer’s review captured that tension in its verdict: “Vast and obtuse in a way that is going to frustrate some and exhilarate others, Crimson Desert is a fascinating journey, even when the destination isn’t all that.” PC Gamer’s review presents that as its reviewer’s judgment, not an objective measure of the game.
Controls, systems, and story cohesion can test patience
A negative review excerpt on Metacritic criticized clunky mechanics and sluggish controls. The Wccftech review, meanwhile, praised the sandbox but said the narrative could have had more cohesion. Those are distinct concerns: a player may enjoy making their own way through the world while finding the controls frustrating, or appreciate the exploration more than the story.

Is Crimson Desert a good fit for you?
The score is most useful as a signal of broad critical consensus, not a prediction of your individual experience. Consider what you value and how much friction you are willing to accept:
- Exploration and world density: The cited praise centers on a detailed, content-rich world and room to explore freely. If that is your main draw, the game’s strengths may outweigh its rough edges.
- Combat and traversal: Pearl Abyss describes an action-adventure built around weapon and hand-to-hand combat, climbing, and gliding. Players especially sensitive to awkward controls should take the cited criticism seriously.
- Clear systems: If you prefer mechanics that explain themselves quickly, the reported trial-and-error learning curve may be a poor fit.
- Story cohesion: The Wccftech review’s criticism of narrative cohesion may matter more if a tightly connected story is your priority.
- Time and patience: One Metacritic-listed review frames the appeal around whether a player has “the time and willingness to dive into its expansive design.” The game’s scale is a strength only if you want to spend time engaging with it.
How do Steam players rate it?
Steam’s English-language review summary showed 86% positive from 62,892 reviews overall and 76% positive from 3,023 recent reviews on October 7, 2026. These are dynamic Steam review figures, not a direct comparison with Metacritic’s critic score: the audiences and rating systems differ. When did Crimson Desert launch, and where can you play it?
Pearl Abyss released Crimson Desert worldwide on March 19, 2026. The company lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Apple Mac, Epic Games Store, and ROG Xbox Ally among its launch platforms. Pearl Abyss describes it as an open-world action-adventure, with a seamless world and combat that includes weapons and hand-to-hand fighting, as well as climbing and gliding for traversal. What is the status of the Charting the Unknown DLC?
As of the October 7, 2026 snapshot, Charting the Unknown was scheduled for October 29, 2026, after being delayed from October 15. Steam listed it as forthcoming for $24.99 at that time.
