Wizards of the Coast’s Dungeons & Dragons team and Studio X have asked the company to recognize their unions, listing “Protection against the encroachment of AI” among their demands. The wording is broader than a standalone demand to stop generative AI; an earlier campaign by MTG Arena workers specifically called for generative AI guardrails.
What the D&D and Studio X workers announced
In an announcement from United Wizards of the Coast–CWA, the Dungeons & Dragons team and Studio X said they had informed Wizards leadership of their intent to unionize. The page is dated October 5, 2026, although its body says “Today, October 6, 2026.” The workers asked the company for voluntary recognition by October 13 and said they planned to begin bargaining after recognition. The union described the AI-related demand as “Protection against the encroachment of AI.” It appeared alongside requests addressing pay, job security, healthcare, workloads, remote and hybrid work, and ownership of work created outside the office. These are the workers’ stated goals, not agreed contract terms.
Why generative AI is part of the story
The October announcement does not specify generative AI in its AI demand. The connection to generative AI comes from an earlier organizing effort by MTG Arena workers. In April, the Communications Workers of America described Arena workers’ demands as including generative AI guardrails, alongside protections related to layoffs and remote work, limits on mandatory crunch, and greater transparency and equity. That distinction matters: the specific call for generative AI guardrails was attributed to the Arena organizing effort, while the D&D and Studio X announcement used the broader phrase “Protection against the encroachment of AI.” The union statement does not, by itself, verify a particular company AI policy or establish that Wizards is pushing a specific use of generative AI.
Which Wizards teams are organizing?
MTG Arena workers organized earlier in 2026 with CWA. CWA reported in April that Arena workers had filed an election petition with the National Labor Relations Board while seeking voluntary recognition. The D&D team and Studio X are organizing their own unions, and the union says they plan to collaborate and align efforts. Studio X includes tabletop Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters teams. The announcement should not be read as saying that all these groups form one bargaining unit.

A Wizards representative did respond to the earlier MTG Arena filing, according to Rascal News. The outlet reported the company’s statement that it had received the filing and was reviewing it, adding that employees were “the lifeblood of what makes us great” and that Wizards was committed to a workplace where people felt heard, valued, and supported. The statement also said the company would respond through the appropriate process. Rascal News, April 30, 2026
