Studio can preview an animation saved locally, but the live experience generally needs a published animation asset and the correct asset ID. If it still fails, check who owns the animation and whether the experience can access it, then check how the Animator is created and where the track is started. Those checks cover the main differences between a Studio preview and a running game.
Why a Studio preview can work when the game does not
Saving animation work in Roblox Studio is not the same as publishing an asset for an experience to load. Roblox’s Animation Editor saves local work as a KeyframeSequence in ServerStorage; games should generally reference a published animation instead. Roblox’s Animation Editor guidance explains the distinction.
Publishing creates a cloud asset with a unique animation ID. The running game must reference that published ID, and its experience must be allowed to access the asset. Even with the correct asset, playback may fail to appear for other players if the Animator or track is set up on the wrong side of the client-server boundary.
1. Publish the animation and use its asset ID
- Open the animation in the Animation Editor and choose Publish to Roblox.
- Copy the resulting animation asset ID from the editor or Creator Dashboard.
- Check that the game’s animation configuration or script uses that exact ID, rather than a local preview or a different animation.
Roblox’s animation tutorial says the animation must be published to the cloud to play in the open game and be reused by its unique ID. A local save preserves working data, but does not by itself provide that published asset.

2. Check the animation’s creator and access
If the experience belongs to a group, make sure the animation was published with that group selected as its Creator. Roblox’s Animation Editor guidance recommends this for animations intended for group-owned games.
Then check the animation’s privacy and permissions. Roblox assets are private by default, so having an asset ID does not establish that the experience can load it. Review the asset’s access settings using Roblox’s asset privacy and permissions guidance.

For a group project, also verify that the account publishing or editing the experience has the necessary group role capabilities. Group roles determine permissions for activities such as editing and publishing experiences; the relevant configuration is specific to the group. See Roblox’s group roles documentation.
3. Check the Animator and where playback starts
Animation replication works differently for player characters and other models. Roblox’s Animation API reference describes these requirements:

- All targets: The
Animatormust initially be created on the server and then replicate to clients. An Animator created only locally may not provide the expected replication. - Player character: When the Animator is under that player’s character, a track started by the owning player’s client can replicate to the server and other clients.
- NPC or other non-player model: If the animation must replicate, load and start its track on the server.
So an animation that appears during a local test may still be invisible to other players if the live game is starting it in a context that does not replicate. Identify whether the target is a player character or an NPC before changing the script’s execution side.

Compare the outcome across the contexts that matter to your game. Note whether the animation fails for the developer only, for other players, or for an NPC. This helps distinguish an asset publication or access problem from a replication problem; Roblox’s documentation describes the separate requirements, but without the project’s code, asset ID, and runtime error, no single cause can be identified.
