It will use a custom AMD system-on-chip and is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. The confirmed 2027 milestone is the planned start of developer alpha hardware shipments—not a consumer release date. A 2027 retail launch has been reported as a possibility, but Microsoft has not committed to one.
When will the next Xbox be released?
Microsoft says it plans to begin shipping alpha versions of Project Helix hardware to developers in 2027. That is a development milestone, not an announcement that consumers can buy the console that year. Xbox’s March 11, 2026 announcement does not give a retail launch date.
Separately, Windows Central reported on February 8, 2026, that AMD CEO Lisa Su said development was progressing to support a 2027 launch. The outlet described that timing as a best-case scenario and noted Microsoft had not made a firm commitment. Treat 2027 as a reported possible launch window, not a confirmed release date. Windows Central’s report is secondary reporting, not a Microsoft launch announcement.
What Project Helix specifications has Microsoft confirmed?
The public technical details remain limited. Microsoft identifies a custom AMD system-on-chip (SoC)—a single chip integrating major processing components—and says the console is designed for Xbox console and PC games. It has not published a final detailed spec sheet.

| Area | What is confirmed | What has not been announced |
|---|---|---|
| Project and status | Project Helix is Microsoft’s in-development next-generation first-party Xbox console. | Final retail configurations and consumer availability. |
| Processor silicon | A custom AMD SoC. Xbox and AMD describe a multi-year strategic partnership to co-engineer silicon for future first-party consoles and other device categories. | CPU and GPU architectures, clock speeds, core counts, and memory specifications. |
| Games and graphics | Designed for Xbox console and PC games; co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. | Specific PC storefronts, a full Windows desktop mode, measured performance, and a complete game compatibility list. |
| Ray tracing | Microsoft claims an order-of-magnitude leap in ray-tracing performance and capability, along with improvements in efficiency, scale, and visual ambition. | Independent test results or a defined benchmark for that claim. |
| Storage and price | Not stated in the cited official announcements. | Storage capacity, bandwidth, retail price, preorder date, and configurations. |
The graphics and ray-tracing descriptions are Microsoft’s claims, not independently measured results. The company’s announcements do not specify whether “PC games” means particular storefronts or unrestricted access to Windows applications. Xbox’s Project Helix overview establishes the broad design goal, not those implementation details.
What is official, and what is still rumor?
Project Helix is an official project, not simply a leaked codename. The uncertainty is around its consumer launch and detailed hardware. When evaluating a claim, distinguish Microsoft’s statements from reporting and speculation:

Microsoft says it is committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come. That is a broad preservation commitment, not a title-by-title Project Helix compatibility list. Until Microsoft publishes one, it is not possible to confirm which specific older games will work on the new console.
