Bethesda Game Studios remembered him as a driving force behind the series’ creation and the foundations of the studio.
What Julian LeFay did at Bethesda
LeFay worked on the project that became The Elder Scrolls: Arena. Ars Technica reports that he joined Bethesda developers Ted Peterson and Vijay Lakshman on an Ultima Underworld-inspired role-playing game that evolved into Arena. Ars Technica’s obituary describes the announcement of his death by his creative partners and his work on that early project.
Game Developer identifies LeFay as Bethesda’s chief engineer on formative games including Arena and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. The GDC Vault’s Arena postmortem listing names LeFay and Peterson as creative leads in design and programming, and says they discuss the game’s origin, development, and publication. That description is the archive’s summary of the session, not a direct quotation from either developer.
Why he is called “the father of The Elder Scrolls”
The epithet reflects LeFay’s central role in the series’ early development, especially Arena, rather than a formal title or a claim that he created the franchise alone. Bethesda’s tribute described him as “the driving force in the creation of The Elder Scrolls and the foundations of Bethesda as a game studio.” The studio also wrote, “Simply put, without Julian, we would not be here today.” Both statements were published by Bethesda Game Studios.

His later work with OnceLost Games
LeFay later worked with OnceLost Games on The Wayward Realms. GamesRadar’s report says the studio announced his death on July 22, 2025, and connected his late work and mentoring to the fantasy role-playing game. The report does not establish the game’s current release status, so no release or availability claim is warranted here.
