This list is an editorial shortlist, ordered by quest tier, encounter structure, coordination demands, and how sharply the fight can punish poor positioning or preparation—not by measured clear rates or hands-on testing. Because several entries are powered-up versions of the same monster, this ranks difficult hunts rather than ten different species.
How this difficulty list is ranked
Capcom’s update announcements identify quest tiers and access requirements, but they do not publish a universal hardest-monster ranking, win rates, or completion-time comparisons. The clearest official endgame signal is the 10-star Arch-tempered tier. Gogmazios belongs on the list for a different reason: its special hunt is designed around a large group. The order below is therefore a reasoned comparison of challenge types, not an official Capcom order.
Quest stars are a useful indicator of intended challenge, not proof that every 10-star hunt is harder than every other encounter. Hunter Rank requirements indicate when content becomes available; they are not difficulty scores.
The 10 hardest hunts in Monster Hunter Wilds

Arch-tempered Arkveld
Arkveld is the strongest single entry point for a hardest-hunts list: its Event Quest is 10-star, and clearing it is part of the stated unlock path for the 10-star Arch-tempered monsters Hunt-a-thon. Capcom’s February 2026 announcement describes the new quests as a significant challenge for seasoned hunters. PlayStation Blog’s February 9, 2026 update announcement identifies the quest and unlock condition.

Arch-tempered Rey Dau
Rey Dau is one of the four locale apexes with a named 10-star Arch-tempered quest in the February 2026 update. That tier places it in the game’s clearest documented endgame shortlist. The available official information does not establish whether it is harder than the other three apexes.

Arch-tempered Uth Duna
Uth Duna also has a named 10-star Arch-tempered quest. An earlier 2025 announcement described its Arch-tempered version as an even more powerful version and gave an HR 50 threshold for that event, but its July 30–August 20, 2025 window is historical—not evidence of current availability. Arch-tempered Nu Udra
Nu Udra is the third locale apex on the 10-star shortlist. Its official quest tier supports inclusion among the hardest documented hunts; the sources do not provide a comparative ranking or a measured reason to place it above or below the other apexes.

Arch-tempered Jin Dahaad
Jin Dahaad appears in both the 10-star Arch-tempered lineup and a separate 9-star Arch-tempered quest announced in December 2025. The 9-star version has an HR 100 entry requirement, while the 10-star version is part of the later apex lineup. These are distinct quest contexts, not evidence that the monster has an objectively measured position relative to the other 10-star hunts. Details are in the December 11, 2025 Update 4 report.

Gogmazios
Gogmazios is a standout group challenge rather than a straightforward single-monster comparison. Update 4 describes a special hunt for a team of eight: up to four hunters plus four support hunters. The announced entry requirement is HR 100. Its scale and coordination demands make it a credible hardest-hunt candidate, though those demands differ from the personal execution test of a solo Arch-tempered hunt. The group format and requirement are documented in the Update 4 announcement.

Arch-tempered Rey Dau in the 10-star Hunt-a-thon
The Hunt-a-thon changes the encounter context: it is a high-difficulty multi-monster quest, not simply another name for the individual 10-star quest. The February 2026 announcement says the 10-star Arch-tempered Arkveld quest and special environment quests unlock the Arch-tempered monsters Hunt-a-thon. Rey Dau is among the apexes named for the 10-star tier. The combination merits a separate place here because encounter structure can add pressure beyond the monster itself; the sources do not specify a comparative clear rate for this format.

Arch-tempered Uth Duna in the 10-star Hunt-a-thon
Uth Duna’s inclusion among the 10-star apexes makes it part of the Hunt-a-thon’s high-difficulty target pool. As with Rey Dau, this entry distinguishes the multi-monster quest context from the individual Arch-tempered fight; it does not claim the Hunt-a-thon version is statistically harder. The unlock requirements are set out in Capcom’s February 2026 update announcement.

Arch-tempered Nu Udra in the 10-star Hunt-a-thon
Nu Udra joins the same 10-star apex lineup, making its Hunt-a-thon appearance a reasonable pick for hunters looking for a more demanding encounter structure. The official sources establish the tier and unlock path, but do not rank the Hunt-a-thon’s individual targets against each other.

Lagiacrus
Lagiacrus earns a place as a mechanics-based challenge, not because an official source calls it one of the game’s hardest monsters. Its hunt includes an underwater portion in which hunters cannot freely use their weapons, a notable break from the usual combat flow. That unusual restriction can make the encounter feel demanding for reasons beyond a monster’s quest tier. The mechanic is described in the Title Update 2 announcement; it does not provide a comparative difficulty ranking.
How to reach repeatable endgame hunts
After the story, High Rank progression continues through Hunter Rank, Optional Quests, and Field Investigations. PlayStation’s Monster Hunter Wilds endgame guide explains that you can choose a monster shown in the area monster list, start an immediate hunt, or save a hunt as an Investigation. Investigations can be attempted up to three times, and the guide recommends checking their guaranteed drops when choosing what to pursue.
For the 10-star Arch-tempered monsters Hunt-a-thon, the announced unlock path is to best the 10-star Arch-tempered Arkveld Event Quest and the special environment quests. The sources reviewed do not establish a permanent availability schedule for every event quest, so check the in-game quest list for what is currently active.
Other high-difficulty content worth knowing about
9-star quests and trio hunts
Update 4 also describes new trio quests against 9-star monsters, alongside the permanent 9-star Arch-tempered Jin Dahaad quest. These are legitimate high-rank challenges, but the announcement does not provide a comparative monster ranking that would justify inserting unspecified trio targets into a top ten.

Future expansion content
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance was announced for 2027 and requires the base game. It is future content, not part of the currently described hunt list. See PlayStation’s September 3, 2026 announcement.
What the ranking can—and cannot—tell you
The strongest evidence-backed conclusion is that the 10-star Arch-tempered Arkveld and four locale apex quests define the clearest official endgame shortlist, while Gogmazios and the 9-star Arch-tempered Jin Dahaad add distinct high-difficulty formats. The list’s ordering is editorial: official announcements provide quest tiers, entry gates, and encounter structures, but no data that settles which monster is hardest for every hunter, weapon, or group.
