Choose a wet-dry vacuum by starting with what you clean, where you will store it, and how often you will move it. A compact model is easier to carry and tuck away; a larger drum can handle repeated or bulky cleanup but takes more room and gets heavier as it fills. Then match the filter, hose, and attachments to the debris you actually expect to pick up.
Start with the cleanup jobs
List the tasks you expect the vacuum to handle: occasional liquid spills, car interiors, workshop debris, or larger home-improvement messes. The right size and accessories follow from those jobs; no single capacity suits every home.
- Occasional spills and car cleanup: prioritize a compact footprint and manageable carrying weight if you will need to lift or transport the vacuum.
- Frequent or larger messes: consider a larger tank so you can collect more before emptying it, provided you have room to store and maneuver the unit.
- Different kinds of debris: make sure the model supports the wet and dry pickup you need, and that its compatible filters and tools are available.
Consumer Reports’ Wet/Dry Vacuum Buying Guide was updated September 15, 2016 and is archival; the publication says it no longer updates the category. Its general buying advice and Shop-Vac’s current FAQ both emphasize balancing capacity with storage and portability.
Balance tank capacity, footprint, and handling
A larger tank means fewer interruptions to empty it, but it also occupies more storage space. The vacuum becomes heavier as it fills, so consider whether you will roll it, carry it up stairs, or lift it into a vehicle. Handles and wheels can help, but check the exact model rather than assuming every unit has the same setup.

Read capacity labels carefully. On its product page for a specific 9-gallon NXT model, RIDGID explains that the gallon figure refers to drum volume and may not equal usable collection capacity. The amount you can collect depends on debris type, filter condition, and other factors. Treat the stated tank volume as a comparison point, not a promise that you can fill the drum to that level with any material.
Choose filtration for wet or dry pickup
“The filter you need is based on the type of debris you are picking up,” says the Shop-Vac FAQ. Wet pickup and dry debris call for different filtration arrangements. Shop-Vac recommends a foam sleeve for wet pickup and appropriate filtration for dry debris; higher-efficiency or HEPA filtration may be relevant for fine dust when the particular model supports it. Confirm the filter arrangement and compatibility instructions for the exact vacuum. An unsuitable setup can send dust or water back into the room.

- PORTABLE: Lightweight, 2.5-gallon wet dry shop vac offers unparalleled mobility
- IDEAL FOR SMALL MESSES: Perfect for the home, garage, cars, trucks and vans
- EASY TO STORE: Compact size, carry handle and cord wrap feature allow for easy storage
- TWO-IN-ONE CAPABILITY: Shop vacuum can be used as a blower for added versatility
- DESIGNED FOR TIGHT SPACES: 1-1/4 in. shop vacuum accessories allow for maneuverability in tight areas
Before buying, check whether replacement filters, foam sleeves, and collection bags are available for your model. Filter and accessory fit varies, so do not assume that a part that fits one Shop-Vac or shop vacuum will fit another.
Compare performance ratings without relying on peak horsepower alone
Look for airflow, suction-related readings, and air watts when the manufacturer provides them, and compare figures on a like-for-like basis. Shop-Vac describes sealed pressure, airflow measured in CFM, and air watts as useful measures. Airflow can help when assessing pickup of lighter material such as wood chips and dust.

Peak horsepower is not a complete measure of how a vacuum will perform on your jobs. RIDGID defines peak HP as a laboratory maximum-output measurement, so do not treat it as a direct or standalone ranking of everyday pickup performance.
As one concrete example of a specification sheet—not a recommendation—RIDGID lists its 9-gallon NXT model at 4.25 peak HP, 231 air watts, 76 CFM, and 70 inches of lift. Those are manufacturer-listed figures for that specific model, not category-wide benchmarks or independent comparative test results.

Match the hose and attachments to the work
Hose diameter and length affect what you can pick up and how far you can work from the vacuum. Shop-Vac says a 2.5-inch hose is worth considering for large debris; smaller or narrower configurations may better suit other tasks. Check the model’s included hose dimensions and which attachments fit before purchasing extras.
- Wet nozzle or floor tool: useful when liquid or broad floor surfaces are part of the job.
- Crevice tool: helps reach narrow gaps, including in a vehicle.
- Extension wands: extend reach without moving the vacuum as often.
- Tank drain: can make emptying collected liquid easier, if the model includes one.
- Blower feature: may be useful for moving debris, but verify that the specific vacuum has a blower port.
- Adapters and onboard storage: check whether the tools you need are included, stored on the unit, or require a compatible adapter.
For a current U.S. product example, RIDGID’s 9-gallon NXT listing specifies a 1-7/8-inch by 7-foot hose, extension wands, utility and wet nozzles, and a general-debris filter. It also describes a blower port, onboard storage, and carrying handles. These listed details illustrate the specifications to compare; they do not establish that this model is best for your home.

Check model availability and avoid hazardous-material use
The current U.S. RIDGID wet-dry vacuum catalog includes varied capacities and configurations, including compact, cordless, and large-capacity options. Availability and model details can change, so verify the current listing and accessory fit for the model you are considering. The RIDGID category overview provides additional category information.
A household wet-dry vacuum is not automatically suitable for hazardous cleanup. Shop-Vac warns against using its wet-dry vacuums for toxic, carcinogenic, combustible, or other hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead, and pesticides; it says specially designed units are available. Follow the equipment maker’s guidance and applicable professional requirements rather than using an ordinary shop vacuum for these materials.
Quick Recap
A practical final check before buying
- Write down the wet and dry cleanup jobs you expect to do most often.
- Choose a size that balances emptying frequency against storage space and the effort of moving a full vacuum.
- Verify that the model has a filter arrangement suitable for each intended pickup type.
- Compare available airflow and suction-related figures; do not use peak horsepower as your only performance comparison.
- Confirm hose diameter and length, included tools, tank drain or blower features, and replacement-part compatibility.
- Check current product details and availability for your region before choosing a specific model.
