Choose World if you want the earlier entry and a story that continues in Iceborne. Choose Rise if portable play, quick-session design, and acrobatic Wirebug movement matter more. If you have no strong preference, World is a reasonable editorial default for a more deliberate first outing—not an objectively better game.
Do you need to play one before the other?
No. Both are Monster Hunter hunting action games built around taking on monsters, alone or with other players, and you do not have to finish one to understand the other. Capcom producer Ryozo Tsujimoto described them as games that “shine in different ways,” rather than presenting one as a required sequel to the other. Capcom’s 2021 developer interview discusses the different design aims behind Rise.

What feels different when you hunt?
Monster Hunter World: a more deliberate first outing
If you want the earlier of these two releases and a story that continues into an expansion, World is the straightforward starting point. Capcom described Iceborne as continuing the story from the base game’s ending. That makes World a sensible pick for someone who wants to follow that particular arc from its beginning, not a prerequisite for Rise.
Monster Hunter Rise: movement and portability
Rise was designed with Nintendo Switch portability in mind, so a player could pick it up and complete a quest in spare time, according to producer Ryozo Tsujimoto. Its Wirebug actions emphasize three-dimensional movement: aerial leaps, climbing, fast traversal, and special attacks for each of the 14 weapons. Palamutes also give players another way to move around during exploration. PlayStation’s platform announcement describes these movement options. This is a difference in emphasis, not evidence that Rise is universally easier or better. Although portability shaped its design, Rise is also available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
#1 Best Overall
- The debut of the new “wirebug” mechanic allows for wire-based grappling actions that can be used to scale cliffs and other hard-to-reach areas, providing new traversal and aerial attack options.
- The game will introduce magnamalo, a menacing new flagship monster, as well as other new monsters like the shape-shifting aknosom, the amphibious tetranadon, and more.
- New hunting partners called palamutes can be personalized and used to ride across the terrain, providing players with all-new traveling and attack options.
- In addition to the plethora of solo and multiplayer quests, the immersive story mode will task aspiring hunters with discovering the secrets behind the puzzling “rampage” events that threaten kamura village.
- Play solo, or join up to three other hunters in local or online co-op play. The Nintendo Switch system also allows for hunting anywhere, anytime and with anyone!
How should you choose between the base games and expansions?
Iceborne is a premium expansion for World that follows its story. Sunbreak is a premium expansion for Rise, adding locales, monsters, hunting actions, and a new quest rank. If you expect to play beyond the base game, compare the total cost of the base game plus its expansion for your platform and region; do not compare a base-game price with a bundle price and assume they include the same content. Capcom announced a World: Iceborne Master Edition bundle for players who had not yet experienced the base game, and a Rise + Sunbreak set in disc and download formats. Capcom noted that the physical Rise + Sunbreak disc is unavailable in some regions. Check the exact edition contents and platform compatibility before buying.
Which platforms are they available on?
Capcom lists World for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (Steam). It lists Rise for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S. These are platform listings, not a guarantee that every edition or bundle is currently sold in every region. Confirm the live store listing for your system before purchase. Capcom’s franchise sales announcement provides the cited platform and sales context.

What about playing with friends?
PlayStation’s announcement says Rise supports solo hunts or cooperative hunts with up to three other players. It specifically confirms that PS4 and PS5 players can play together; it does not establish cross-play across every platform. If playing with a particular friend is decisive, verify compatibility for both players’ platforms and editions before choosing.

| Choose | When this fits you |
|---|---|
| World first | You want the earlier entry, a more deliberate first outing, or the story that continues in Iceborne. |
| Rise first | You value portability-led design, quick-session play, or Wirebug-focused mobility; it is also the option if you want to play on Nintendo Switch. |
| Either | You have no preference on pace or movement and are choosing based on the platform you own or the total price of the base game plus expansion. |
Use the guide as a preference match, not a difficulty ranking: the available sources do not establish that one game is easier for newcomers. Sales figures show that both have found large audiences, but they cannot tell you which will suit you. Capcom reported more than 25 million units worldwide for World and more than 15 million for Rise as of March 31, 2024; the World figure includes shipments of the World: Iceborne Master Edition. Capcom later announced that Sunbreak had exceeded 10 million cumulative units on June 4, 2025. These figures use different reporting dates and should not be treated as a direct, simultaneous comparison. Capcom’s June 4, 2025 announcement gives the Sunbreak figure.
