An NPC may use what you just said to answer in context, retain information for a later session, tailor future quests to your choices, or send data for the game’s own system improvements. Those are different practices, and none automatically means a third-party AI provider is training its general-purpose model on your gameplay.
What does “learning from your gameplay” mean?
The phrase can describe several different things. To understand a game’s privacy practices, ask which of these it does rather than treating them as one kind of “learning.”
- Using session context: The NPC refers to earlier messages or choices in the same conversation to produce a relevant reply. This does not by itself show that the game stores the conversation after you leave.
- Remembering across sessions: The game saves prior interaction details and loads them the next time you play, allowing an NPC or feature to continue from earlier context.
- Personalizing later play: The game uses patterns in choices or conversations to tailor a later scenario, quest, or response. Personalization may use saved data without training a general-purpose model.
- Improving the game’s own systems: The operator analyzes player inputs or gameplay behavior to develop its product, safety systems, or personalization features. This is distinct from a provider training its general model.
- Training a provider’s model: A third-party AI company uses inputs or outputs to train or improve its models. Sending data to a provider to generate a live response does not, on its own, establish that the provider trains on it.
Chat is not the only possible data source. Depending on the game, relevant information could include voice audio, attachments, choices, progression, profile context, gameplay telemetry, or location-linked contributions. A general AI notice may not explain which of these apply to a particular feature.
What do game policies say about AI NPC data?
Published policies show why the answer has to be specific to the game, feature, and policy in effect. These examples describe their named platforms or services; they should not be generalized to other games.

Fortnite: voice handling for LLM characters
Epic says voice audio used with Fortnite’s LLM characters is securely sent to Gemini to generate a response, is not stored, and is not used to train AI models. Epic says that if a player reports an interaction, a text log is provided to Epic to improve safeguards. Otherwise, transcripts are not stored or used for training. Chapter: chat, attachments, and progression
Chapter says it stores avatar and game progression data as well as NPC messages, chat history, and attachments. It says NPC messages and attachments are sent to Anthropic for processing, and minimal profile or session context may be used to personalize a response. Chapter’s policy says Anthropic does not use Chapter inputs or outputs to train foundation models under its Commercial Terms. That is a statement about provider training; it does not mean Chapter collects no data or never uses it for its own game features. See Chapter’s privacy policy.

Trove: current-scenario history and possible personalization
Trove says it sends display name, pronouns, choices or responses, and conversation history from the current scenario to its AI providers. It may use patterns across scenarios for future personalization and may use de-identified behavioral data to improve its own models and personalization systems. Those statements concern Trove’s own possible uses; they should not be collapsed into a claim that its AI providers train their models on player conversations. See Trove’s privacy policy.
Can an AI NPC remember you between sessions?
It can, if the game saves and reloads prior interaction context. Roblox’s platform guidance defines an “extended interaction” to include an AI component that saves context from earlier interactions and loads it in a later session. Under Roblox’s published rules, a game with that feature must answer “Yes” to the Extended AI question in the Content Maturity questionnaire and receive a Restricted maturity label, making it inaccessible to users under 18. Roblox also requires visible notices that the conversation is AI. These are Roblox platform rules, not universal rules for games on other platforms. Its example disclosure is: “This is an AI-powered conversation, not human. It may make mistakes.” See Roblox’s content maturity guidance.

Memory can also be narrower than a character remembering a player. A game might retain a conversation for continuity, store progression, or use prior choices to tailor a future scenario. To find out which meaning applies, look for separate policy details about what is saved, how long it remains available, and whether you can reset or delete it.
Could data beyond NPC chat be used to improve AI?
Yes, but this depends on the service and the data it collects. Kongregate’s developer support guidance says gameplay events, performance metrics, behavior patterns, progression, and debugging data can be analyzed for AI improvement. It cautions that whether such data is personal depends on how it is collected and used, and says developers remain responsible for applicable privacy obligations and consistency with their disclosures. AI-related use can also involve contributions outside a conversation. Niantic Spatial says volunteered routes, public-place images, or scans with location information may be used to improve products, including AI/ML models, after the scans are anonymized. - What is collected? Look for chat text, audio, choices, progression, profile context, uploaded files, telemetry, or location-linked contributions.
- What is it used for? Distinguish live response generation, continuity, future personalization, safety or analytics, improvement of the game’s own systems, and training of a provider’s model.
- Who receives it? Find out whether the game operator, its AI or cloud provider, or both can access the information.
- How long is it kept? Check for a stated retention period and for memory reset, deletion, export, or objection controls.
- Are there age or parental controls? Check whether AI chat or voice features have age restrictions or controls for parents and guardians.
The Spanish data protection agency AEPD recommends contextual notices explaining NPC data practices, detailed policies covering data flows, retention, and AI involvement, and processing limited to defined gameplay purposes. It also recommends minimizing stored data, limiting retention, purging raw inputs where possible, and offering tools such as memory reset and data export. These are the agency’s recommendations, not a guarantee that every game provides those controls. Its example notice says: “This AI remembers your choices to personalise quests.” See AEPD guidance on video games.
How to compare two games’ AI privacy practices
Compare the features and policies point by point; a label such as “AI NPC” does not tell you how a game handles data.
