If your movement is inaccurate or your Joy-Con does not respond in Nintendo Switch Sports, first check that you are using a supported play mode and controller. Then update the system and controllers, reset the affected Joy-Con, remove anything covering it, and calibrate its motion controls. If it still fails in other motion-enabled games—or calibration will not complete—the controller may need Nintendo service. Motion-control problems are different from control-stick drift, so calibrating motion controls is not a repair for a damaged stick.
Check that your game setup supports motion controls
Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode. Nintendo recommends playing in TV Mode on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2. Controller options vary by sport, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible. If you are using Joy-Con 2, check Nintendo’s sport-specific compatibility information before troubleshooting the controller: Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ.

If the problem occurs only during Soccer Leg Strap play, check that the Joy-Con is attached to the Leg Strap correctly. Joy-Con 2 is not compatible with the Leg Strap, so a calibration attempt will not make that combination work.
Update and reset the Joy-Con
- Update the console to the latest system version: open System Settings > System > System Update and follow the prompts.
- Update the controller: open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers.
- For Nintendo Switch Joy-Con, detach the affected controller and press its SYNC button once. Press another button to turn it on again, then reconnect it and test the game. Nintendo includes these steps in its Joy-Con motion-controls troubleshooting.
Check for anything obstructing the controller
Remove any protective cover temporarily and make sure nothing is covering the right Joy-Con’s IR motion camera. Some software uses that camera, and an obstruction can interfere with its function. The camera check is especially relevant if a game feature that depends on it is not responding; it is not a substitute for checking the motion-control setup or calibration.

#1 Best Overall
- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
Calibrate the motion controls
Remove straps and other accessories before calibrating. On Nintendo Switch, use this path:
- Open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Motion Controls.
- Hold − or + on the Joy-Con you want to calibrate.
- Place the controller on a flat, stable surface with the control stick facing upward, then leave it still while calibration completes.
Follow Nintendo’s controller calibration instructions if you need the console’s full guidance. Calibration can address an inaccurate motion reading, but it cannot repair physical damage or control-stick drift.
Work out whether the problem is the game or the controller
Test the Joy-Con in another game or feature that supports motion controls. Check the affected software’s supported controllers and play modes, and install any available game update if the controller works elsewhere.

- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.Battery life can last for more than six hours, but will vary depending on the software and usage conditions. For example, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild can be played for roughly 3 hours on a single charge
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- It works in other motion-enabled software: focus on Nintendo Switch Sports’ supported mode, the sport’s controller requirements, and the game update status.
- It fails across supported software: the issue is more likely to be with the controller than with Switch Sports alone.
- Calibration fails: Nintendo’s troubleshooting treats this as a reason to have the non-working Joy-Con serviced, rather than repeatedly relying on calibration.
Nintendo’s guidance is that a Joy-Con needs service if motion controls do not respond with any supported software or if motion-control calibration fails. Start with Nintendo’s motion-controls troubleshooting, then use the Nintendo support site for your region to request service. Service eligibility, cost, and turnaround are not established by the troubleshooting guidance and may vary by region.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConsider wireless interference if connection warnings recur
If the console repeatedly displays “Your Joy-Con’s connection is unstable,” wireless interference is one possible cause. Nintendo also notes this possibility when characters move incorrectly during controller shaking. Treat these symptoms as a clue, not a definite diagnosis: first complete the setup, update, reset, and calibration checks, then see whether the warning or movement problem persists.
