Check the portrait in a consistent order: facial and body anatomy, pose and physical interactions, lighting and texture, then the wider scene. These details can reveal inconsistencies, but no single visual clue proves an image was AI-generated—and a convincing portrait does not prove it is an authentic photograph. To establish where an image came from, look for reliable context or provenance information as well as inspecting the pixels.
How to inspect the portrait
View the image at a size that lets you examine details without mistaking compression, blur, or a stylized treatment for errors. Work through the same checks each time, and treat anything unusual as a prompt to look more closely rather than a verdict.
1. Check facial features and anatomy
Look at how the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and overall facial proportions fit together. Compare features across the face for geometry that seems inconsistent or appears to shift from one area to another. If the body is visible, check proportions, limb lengths, and the placement of visible joints.
2. Check pose and physical interactions
Ask whether the pose could be physically held and whether the body makes sense in relation to objects and other people. Hands, limbs, and contact points should appear to connect in a plausible way. OpenAI’s image-evaluation guidance includes limb and joint stability, preservation of body shape, and physical plausibility as checks for image editing; it is general evaluation guidance, not a child-specific diagnostic test.

3. Compare texture, focus, and detail
Check whether skin texture and small details fit the apparent focus and lighting. Look for features that melt, duplicate, or change without a clear reason. Smooth skin or a polished style alone is not proof of synthetic origin: style and image treatment can affect appearance too.
4. Follow the light and shadows
Compare highlights, shadows, reflections, and areas where one object should block another. They should make sense together and fit the depicted setting. A subject can look convincing in isolation while seeming disconnected from the space around them.

5. Inspect the wider scene
Look beyond the face at clothing, background objects, and interactions. Details that should connect or repeat can reveal inconsistencies. Consider stylistic and sociocultural plausibility alongside anatomy; these are distinct categories in the image-assessment guide, not a universal list of errors every synthetic image will contain.
6. Keep appearance separate from origin
Visual inspection can help you assess plausibility, but it cannot establish who created the image or whether it depicts a real event. Check the source and any provenance information that is available. NIST treats authentication and provenance tracking as distinct approaches to synthetic-content transparency in its report, Reducing Risks Posed by Synthetic Content.

What visual clues can—and cannot—prove
A 2024 guide by Kamali, Nakamura, Chatzimparmpas, Hullman, and Groh groups possible AI-image cues into five categories: anatomical, stylistic, functional, physics-related, and sociocultural. The authors describe a collection of 138 diffusion-model-generated images, 9 social-media images, and 42 real photographs. Those materials are not a universal accuracy benchmark for human detection.
The guide cautions that perceptible artifacts are not always present and that pixels alone may not reveal an image’s provenance. So an apparent flaw is not conclusive proof of AI generation, and the absence of visible flaws is not proof of authenticity. Compare two portraits on the same criteria
If you are choosing between two candidate images, assess them side by side using the same questions. Record visual plausibility separately from evidence about origin; a more convincing image is not necessarily a more authentic one.

Consider privacy and child safety
If the portrait depicts an identifiable real child or uses a child’s likeness, think about consent, privacy, disclosure, and safe sharing—not just whether the image looks realistic. A joint statement published by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and co-signatories on 23 February 2026 raises concerns about harms to children, including cyber-bullying and exploitation, and calls for safeguards, meaningful transparency, accessible removal mechanisms, and enhanced measures for children. The statement notes that legal requirements vary by jurisdiction. Read the joint statement on AI-generated imagery and the protection of privacy.

UNICEF’s third edition of Guidance on AI and children, published in December 2025, also addresses AI-generated child sexual abuse material and non-consensual intimate images.
Why a classifier is not an authenticity test
OpenAI’s addendum on GPT-4o image generation describes a classifier intended to identify photorealistic children in uploaded images. The addendum says the classifier can occasionally misclassify images, including flagging younger-looking adults as children, and that ambiguous cases are treated cautiously. That description applies to one provider’s system; it is not a universal detector, nor does it establish whether a portrait is authentic.
