Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor most PlayStation users whose devices support passkeys, a passkey is a sensible default: it replaces password entry at sign-in. PlayStation’s two-step verification (2SV) keeps the password and adds a one-time code by text message or authenticator app. The official guidance does not provide a controlled comparison proving that one method is universally safer, so the practical choice comes down to supported devices, sign-in preference and recovery readiness.
What is the difference between PlayStation passkeys and 2-step verification?
| Method | What you do to sign in | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Passkey | Use a passkey saved on or synced across a supported device; you do not enter your PlayStation password in the passkey sign-in flow. | Make sure you can use the passkey on your devices and have access to another device or a recovery route if one is lost. |
| 2-step verification | Enter your password, then a one-time code from SMS or an authenticator app. | Keep the phone or number available, and save PlayStation’s single-use backup codes. |
PlayStation’s setup and support pages describe these different sign-in flows, but do not publish a head-to-head security test or a numerical ranking. A passkey removes password entry; 2SV adds a code step to password sign-in. Neither description, by itself, establishes which is safer in every user’s circumstances. See PlayStation’s passkey guidance and its 2SV setup instructions.
Which should you choose?
Choose a passkey if your devices support it
A passkey is a practical choice if you can sign in on your PlayStation devices and have a reliable way to access the passkey manager on your phone or computer. Passkeys may sync through the platform account associated with that device. PlayStation says another device using the same passkey manager can be used if your phone is lost.
Check the checkout setting before switching: PlayStation says “Password at Checkout is not compatible with your account if you have passkeys set up.” If you rely on that setting, review your account preferences before enabling passkeys. The compatibility note appears in PlayStation’s security best-practices guide.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key NFC via USB-A and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Choose 2SV if you prefer a password plus a code
PlayStation 2SV supports a text message or an authenticator app. You keep entering your password, then provide the current code. This can suit someone who prefers that familiar flow or whose devices have passkey compatibility problems, provided they can reliably reach the chosen phone or app and retain backup codes.
Do not decide from a universal safety claim
PlayStation’s official materials explain how to use and recover each method, but do not establish a universal security winner. Choose based on your supported devices and recovery plan rather than an unsupported claim that one method always offers better protection. The reviewed guidance also does not say whether passkeys and 2SV can be enabled concurrently; check the current options in Account Management security settings instead of assuming both can be active.
How to set up a PlayStation passkey
-
Sign in to Account Management and open Security.
-
Enable Sign in with Passkey, select Create a Passkey, and follow the prompts on your device.
-
On PS5, go to Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey, then scan the displayed QR code with a mobile device.

Confirm that you can sign in on the devices you use. PlayStation says you can manage passkeys and create additional ones. If you need to return to password sign-in, disable passkey sign-in and create a password.
Check device and browser compatibility
PlayStation lists passkey sign-in on PS5, PS4, its website, the PlayStation App and Remote Play for Mac. Its support page says most mobile devices with iOS 16 or later and Android 9 or later are supported, and recommends current Safari, Chrome or Edge for browser use. This is not a guarantee for every device combination: Sony notes possible problems with some hardware security keys, some Android-and-Windows pairings and older browsers. If Remote Play on Mac gives you trouble, PlayStation advises reverting to password sign-in. For a failed passkey attempt, use the Can’t Sign In with Passkey route by email or QR code on the support flow.
How to set up 2-step verification
-

Save the backup codes shown during setup somewhere you can access if your phone is unavailable. PlayStation Support describes ten codes, each usable once, in its 2SV troubleshooting guidance.
If you have lost access to the phone or number and do not have a backup code, PlayStation directs you to its Online Assistant. The same support route is relevant if you receive unexpected 2SV messages and cannot change your method.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens if you lose your phone?
If you use a passkey
Try another device that uses the same passkey manager; PlayStation says a synced passkey can be available there. If you cannot sign in, use the passkey support route rather than assuming the passkey is permanently lost. Keep another supported device or recovery access available before you depend on a single phone.
If you use 2SV
Use one of the backup codes you saved during setup; each works once. If you have no code and cannot access the registered phone or number, follow PlayStation’s 2SV account-recovery instructions and contact support through the Online Assistant.

Protect the account beyond the sign-in method
-
Do not share your PlayStation account details, and sign out on consoles used by other people.
-
Avoid signing in on shared public devices. Someone with account access may be able to change sign-in information and lock you out.
-
Only scan QR codes from sources you trust; PlayStation specifically warns against scanning codes in unsolicited messages or offers.
-
Review account security and checkout settings after changing your sign-in method.
